If you are a slave owner then you have to look after your slave otherwise the slave is of no use to you, you have to feed , clothe and give your slave some quality of life, just as a sheep farmer has to take care of his dog. If you are a wage slave then the capitalist can simply get rid of you on a whim i.e. terminate your job, throw you on the unemployment scrap heap when he has no use for you, he couldn't care if you starve, have no place to live etc When work picks up he simply goes back to the labour pool , sees who is available, and pick another worker, the most healthy one, a two legged dog is of no use to him
