Both breeds are beautiful and are known for their loving and playful temperaments.
But how do you know which one is right for you, and is there really a difference between the two anyway?
This video will help teach you all about the differences between the English and American Cocker Spaniel, and find out which breed might make the best pet for you!
Both the English and American Cocker Spaniel share a similar heritage.
As you may have assumed, the English Cocker Spaniel came first, by way of England.
Originally, the English Cocker Spaniel was grouped with a number of other spaniel hunting breeds and was separated only by type and hunting ability.
He was first known as a Cocking Spaniel due to his smaller size and the way he hunted birds.
The Cocking Spaniel became the English Cocker Spaniel after finally being classified as his own breed in the 19th century.
In the 20th century, American enthusiasts of the English Cocker Spaniel opted to breed a companion dog of comparable temperament and beauty.
This breed was smaller and had a more relaxed, family-oriented personality.
The American Cocker Spaniel was born.
Today, both breeds are favored by certain dog enthusiasts and clubs for their unique talents, temperaments, and looks.
The English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel vary quite a bit in appearance, although it may not be that obvious at first.
Both have thick wavy fur, long ears, and adoring expressive faces.
However, the English Cocker Spaniel is a larger breed with a longer head.
He is around 15 to 17 inches tall and weighs between 26 to 34 pounds.
His coat can come in a variety of colors, such as Black, Orange, Liver, Blue, Lemon, Tan, White, Ash, Silver, Golden, Red and Sable.
The American Cocker Spaniel, also known simply as the Cocker Spaniel, is around 13.5 to 15.5 inches and weighs about 20 to 30 pounds.

I had a black English cocker. He lived for 18 years and was a THerapy trained dog who used to visit Retirement Homes and special schools. So easily trained. I miss him so much as he died 3 years ago.
You might had a healty cocker 18 years is a lot
😢
This is very informative and helps out very well nice job!
I have an American cocker spaniel named Charley, and she's the sweetest, most affectionate dog I've ever had. She never leaves my side and always needs to be touching me. She does have separation anxiety, and as such we crate trained her as a puppy and we crate her at night and when we are away, but sometimes we'll let her snuggle with us at night, especially when it's cold. She loves it, possibly even more than we do. She just turned five in June, and she's a bit chubby, but still thinks she's a puppy. She hates her feet and ears touched, which makes grooming and cleaning her ears difficult, but she has come to accept that bath time means foot scrubbing and ear cleaning. She just got over a bad ear infection, and I don't expect her to have any more problems with her ears being cleaned lol
I have a 3 month old red English cocker and he is absolutely my baby boy. I love him so much!
About to get a black cocker spaniel about 6 weeks old so I’ve been binging your videos and they’re a great help
Glad you have enjoyed them.......we had a black Cocker Spaniel called Guinness, he's in a few of our videos but recently passed away.
I had a black cocker spaniel. He was the sweetest dog I've ever had. He lived to be 18 years old. He was wonderful.
My only regret with getting a cocker spaniel is no one told me how expensive grooming was nor did they tell me how fast their coats grow.
Got pretty expensive. Wife is starting to learn how to groom our cocker now.
It should’ve been 8 weeks before you took it
@@kcg5187 I was about to say that. 6 weeks is irresponsible
I don't know what happened to the American Cocker Spaniel over the years but a lot of them look like the have headaches. The features have been pushed in and eyes pushed out to the sides with this big crown. I'm not disparaging anyone's dog in particular but this is not what the breed looked like in the 70's and 80's.
Too much inbreeding from puppy mills and irresponsible breeders.
We have two English Cockers. Best dogs ever
I have a English cocker spaniel that is golden. My mum had wanted one since she was little and got her dream, now our little golden girl is a crazy puppy 😂😂
Thanks this has helped a lot
I am a Happy owner of 3 beautiful and all healthy buffcoloured Americancockerspaniel girls ❤❤❤🐶🐶🐶🙌🏻
im about to get an american cocker spaniel poodle cross (cockapoo) in a few weeks. I wondered what the difference between american and english was so this vid was a great help thanks
Hmm, I assume the main difference is that the English Cocker Spaniels write words with Us, Eg; Doughnut, Colour, Neighbour. American Cocker Spaniels do not use U in the same words, Eg; Donut, Color, Neighbor.
_(Seriously tho cheers, I've been trying to help my parents find their perfect retirement doggo son and this breed has just come up as an option.)_
My Cocker Lady is an american one but she has a liver roan coat color witch is more common in the English lines so i'm thinking that her breeder might have infused english lines into her bloodlines. She is well loved and cared for :D
I'm going to get an English cocker spaniel for sure
i have a mix of english and american
Ab to get a golden cocker spaniel in 2 days a rescue these are helpful
I love English cocker spaniels,I have a black 1 that’s 1 year old and his name is Benji🐶
The Cocker part comes from their ability to hunt Woodcock birds. More commonly known as Cocks.
The breed is smaller than many hunting dogs because woodcocks hang out in shorter grass.
I've had 6 2 still living Charlie's the most lovable chip has severe aggressive side to him he bit me so many times but still try to work with him he was abused as a puppy don't suggest getting one from a shelter they have issues
But which is cuter?
Both of them. ♥️
@Cosmic sudrrs AMERICAN
English
My cocker spaniel Maxi have a english mother and a american farther. Both parents were purebreed so he is a mix up :)

Hello I had a cocker spaniel and i. Hoping my mom will get me another one since my old one died years ago,do you need a big house to have one I have a medium one😀💜
I've watched a few videos and I haven't noticed anything that said if they like water or not? Can you please let me know :)
Thank you
Yes Cocker Spaniels do tend to like going in the water although mine hated the bath
Ok thank you for the info :)
I have a cocker spaniel with a enligsh purebreed mother and a american purebreed farther
I have one
I have a 4 week old cocker spaniel puppy but I don’t know what kind of cocker spaniel she is American or English how can I tell
They are easy to tell apart by just looking at their face profile. Google English Cocker Spaniel then American Cocker Spaniel and you should easily be able to see which your puppy is
Why is it not 8 weeks old?
@@kcg5187 maybe he/she have the parents too
@@plsignoreme636 You would think he knows what breed the parents and the puppy if he had them.
4 weeks is too young to be away from litter & mum. Should be at least 8 weeks.
Do they shed? Cause I'm thinking to get one american but I have 2 baby boys and I'm worried about the hair.
Yes like crazy
the hair is very bad but if you brushed and deshed every day it will be fine
Original from Spain
Tricolor American cocker spaniel here. Cataract in his eye at three months of age. Contracted Lyme disease apparently shortly thereafter.
But he such a good dog.
Damn dude 😟 whoever the breeder was needs to take responsibility. At least he's a good boi
You mean British?
No, English is the breed, not British
