I have been living few short times abroad. Therefore I wasn't surprised at all. Every time I came back I valued my country even more.
We have a beautiful land where you can be quite easily who ever you wanna be. And if someone says you are nice or athletic or funny, you can truly believe it and be proud. It was always a fresh wind hear some straight talk after small talk.
      I ❤ Suomi.

Famous finnish poet Eino Leino wrote "kel onni on se onnen kätkeköön" and it translate “he who has joy, let him hide it”. And that was 100 years ago and it still descripes finnish people pretty well.

      A Song About Happiness
The one who has joy, shall hide it,
the one who has a treasure, shall cover the treasure,
and shall be happy with their happiness
and rich in their elation just alone.
No joy suffers the eyes' of people.
The one who has joy, shall go to forested wetlands
      and live quietly, only quietly
and quietly rejoice in their happiness.
      - Eino Leino

  • @Songfugel

We are, the problem is that happiness is usually mistranslated in this context to mean "iloisuus" which is the more spontaneous joy/jolly/laughing happiness, when in fact it means the onnellisuus/tyytyväisyys which is the safety/feeling blessed/content/loved part of happiness.
Finns who hear we are the happiest country in the world, think it means the first kind, which they disagree with, but fail to realize it actually means the latter, which most can agree with more easily

When kids get home early they are either by themselves or with friends - they don't need someone looking after (over) them all the time. As it is e.g. said in the video, most kids walk to school, or take the bus, by themselves without any supervision. A real villain of our times is some people's need to control their children, and not giving them the freedom they need.

The Finnish mindset of stoic pragmatism definitely helps when things don't go the way one expects. I personally find the "Happiest country in the world" a bit misleading because it's not really about happiness, but more along the lines of how well the society functions. I'd say we Finns are quite content with our little mundane lives, not much to complain about. Corruption is nearly non existent, education is free all the way to Uni, human rights are respected, extensive social welfare so that no one ends up on the streets. All in all Finland is a really decent place to live. 👌🏽🇫🇮

I am not sure about the happiness, but as a foreigner who lives in Finland, I can see that people are quite happy with what they have, and even most of the time, people don´t like to show they are rich (shy to show off), and even some of the managers or VPs in companies like to use secondhand shop materials for their daily lives, and they are proud to do so as well.

Happiness is connected to your mindset, attitude, and reactions towards on different things that are happening around you.
What has been mentioned here is the consistency of the living. There are many things that are far away from perfect, but we get along with some of the things. We have all our own individual criteria of what makes you happy, that's why I think the name of this report has been received with such different reactions, it should probably be renamed.

Frank Martela said in another interview that Finns don't advertise their joyfulness, as opposed to some for example Latin American countries. And happiness is comparative: you're happy if you believe you're having more sex than your neighbours. So if everyone around you advertised how perfect their lives are, you tend to feel bad. That's Instagram for you. In Finland showing off your success and belongings is frowned upon. Lottery winners don't necessarily want to buy a fancy car or quit their jobs.

As a Finn I'm not surprised at our ranking as happiest. We generally have good social services and health care, low corruption, lovely nature and lots of it, that kind of thing. I also think that contentment equals happiness. It's not about grinning ear to ear 24/7 but of feeling pretty secure and content. Finns usually aren't obsessed with social climbing or consumerism, "keeping up with the Jones's" is not a thing. More like if you have ore than your neighbor, you're more likely to downplay it. I think it's more calm and centered and more about focusing on what you have rather than what you don't. It may also be because there has been so much war in our pretty recent future so people either remember what it's like not to have peace and security or have heard the stories from parents and grandparents about those times. I hope we can continue to be happy and at peace.

There is also a saying, towards to new disappointments. Kohti uusia pettymyksiä. So we don't have high hopes and things planned ahead to retirement. Little setbacks are little and mostly expected. And when we succeed we accept it just a little thing too and not a thing to celebrate. So difference treating success and failure is small.
When my friends played basketball in highest level in finland, they had a saying if we win we drink (alcohol of course) and if we lose we drink twice as much. So it was celebration either way.
And when their team rose to highest level they had a friendly off season game against another team which was already on highest level. You could smell that old booze in the audience. And when I sat on first row I heard what those centers said each other, before judge threw ball.
    "I have hangover"
    "me too"
"Ok lets play this game so we can go to the bar"
And it was actually good game with lots of points and action.

Finland is renown for their school system, and we other Nordics would really want to have the same one, but unfortunately our politicians don't want to...
It's worst in Sweden, where the big corporations owns the politicians... and as long as it's like that our school system and health services will never become what the people actually want.

about the accepting bad thing more easily, i feel like most Finns have the "it is what it is" kind of mindset. accepting that something happened doesn't make it less bad or the bad disappear, but there is no reason to dwell in it. it already happened so why worry about it happening? its time to move on and find a solution to fix it.

The problem with the happiness index is that it has the biggest clickbait title. It takes several metrics into account like GDP per capita, environment, corruption levels etc. In reality it makes sense why Finland is nr 1 because of these factors. I think of it more as the average person having a higher chance of living a good life here. Malaysia is a lot warmer, welcoming and happier but there's a bigger chance that you are born into poverty or experience corruption.
Another things is that Finns tend to complain a lot which is funny because we literally border an incredibly corrupt country where they never seem to complain, but on the other hand this is the key to success. You don't solve problems without recognizing them first.

I think us being happiest is misleading. We have very small requirements to be basic content. I wouldn't call us happy, I would call us content, not even satisfied since there's a ton of stuff that we could improve upon. But we have sisu so we will just deal. And we take even the smallest bits of happiness as just that, being happy. Sauna, good food, nature, our pets and families and so on. We love fiercely.

"Why are Finns the happiest.." = In English it means that our municipal/national/parliamental/civil servants/school system/health care etc. are 98% reliable systems...nobody is left alone. In my opinion there would be more homeless people if it wasn´t so cold here. Luckily during the daytimes 6-22 there are many places were you can stay warm without being hushed away (libraries, malls...) Some tens of Finns actually have chosen to live in forest. BUT the ones who would really like to have a place called home is around 1000 people, so this problem is easilly solved.

I don't think Finn's ( I'm one) are melancholic people. I personally think we are more pessimistic people. We expect the worst to happen all the time and for things to go down the drain. So... When things don't go badly and things are actually going well.. we are happily surprised by the outcome of things. At the same time IF things go well for too long we are always waiting for the other shoe to drop. So in essence we don't believe at out core that we deserve to be happy. And we don't flaunt our happiness when we have it because we believe that it will be taken from us. So we are silent and content and our happiness is mostly internal or the expression of it is kept within the family or among close friends. (I've heard that many foreigners think that Finn's are always angry.. no... we are not.. we are just an actual country of people where "resting bitch face" is the norm 🤣)

The same site states Hitler to be a facist, which is inaccurate.
Please try to refrain from using wikipedia.
I know it becomes more difficult to use links as this platform doesn't support it -- or more importantly they don't allow links that are in line with their policies. Or agendas, if I may say so.
I'd suggest to do multiple research and compare the results in statistic sites.
Even, if we would go where the fence is the lowest and use your preferred site as some kind of source. Finland doesn't do very good in there to be titled as "The happiest country".
