Hey Folks! Yes, I'm aware that the garage door springs will cause chaos if they break. I plan on enclosing the spring in a piece of 4" PVC.
Jay Bates. No need for PVC. Just run a cable through the center of the springs (safety wire). It should be like this already if it was done properly.
Jay Bates The rotor loks like The rotor from Marius Hornberger... 😉
Jay Bates 👍👍👍
Nils LegoTV I think you have it backwards.
robertw0925 there is a cable going through it already but the blower housing is close enough that the spring could impact it if it breaks.
I had my shop almost exactly set up like this. I had my dust collector set up in the same place, right next to the garage door.
I was running my business out of 400sqft. I have since moved into a 1500sqft warehouse with 15' ceilings and it has opened up a whole new world. The added floor space enabled me to get more machines and now my production and quality has gone way way up...
Nice video. I have a Clearvue Max 1800 that has been is service for 10 years now and still works great. My build is on Clearvue's web site as Matt's shed build. I recently added a bin full sensor to the 33 gallon trash can lid so I never over fill the bin again as I did about 5 years ago. The full sensor and warning light system is a copy of Onidea's built from Ebay parts for about $35.
That's a substantial upgrade! looking forward to seeing the second half
Great video Jay. A friend is a very big help when doing a job like that. I'm looking forward to seeing the duct work installation.
Thanks for sharing
Glad to see you upgraded to the Bill Pense design from ClearVue! You'll live a longer happier life!
Very cool Mr J.
Looking forward to the second part, thank you for sharing 😄📐👍
Upgraded dust collection = $$$
A good friend to help you install it = priceless
Great job Jay
Hey Jay Great vid. You have fantastic video quality and editing. I'm hoping to see some more diverse builds in the future. Cheers!
Wow that's one sweet set. What a beast. ENJOY!!!!
Fascinating that oak bothers you. With me, it's pine. Major bummer since I work with so much construction grade lumber. My current dust collection consists of a power vent fan motor moving a lot of fresh air through my shop. Not fool proof, but in north Mississippi, it works because of mild winters. Great video. Very happy for you.
Paul Crow wow! Yeah, that's a bummer. Pine is the only tree I'm NOT allergic to.
if you still can, I highly recommend you install a floor sweep module. they make things really easy when you're sweeping up the floor as you don't need to use a dustpan.
All kinds of fantastic Jay !
Well made dust collector, all in the mind!
Great set up Jay, very envious. Cheers, Jim
Great! Now I have dust collector envy. This is probably why some people refuse to use power tools. ;)
Really cool Jay!
Now you're going to be back in your shop in no time ;))
Ps. i hope that everything it's ok with your allergies
Awesome, Most Excellent, Two thumbs up
I really need to sort out my dust collection
Jay, when you added the HEPA filter to your grizzly, could you tell a difference, in the amount of dust it was collecting, compared to not having it?
Hey Jay, What brand of 4" coupling did you use off the Y to your tablesaw? Thanks.
Hi Great video. Could the unit be placed outside of a shop enclosed from rain etc but in an unheated area?
awesome install Jay! having just watched Bellevue Workshop's dust collection system with his sweet reed switch setup for auto on/off based on a blast gate opened or closed, was wondering if you had plans to incorporate something as ornate, or just going with the tried and true remote control (assuming so, since you highlighted that at the very start of this video). again, great install and what a pal, in Wayne B. for the helping hand.. and Mr. Stone himself, in the next video!
Jay, thanks for posting this install video. How much space did you have from the garage door rail to the wall you mounted the cyclone on? (I'm considering a similar install).
Hey Jay!
I've been looking at the CV1800 for a while. Just curious about the noise level and noise transmission to the house by mounting on the wall? Also curious if you got the 15" or 16" impeller version.
Thanks!
Great videos...what program did you use to do the sketch up of your shop?
Good stuff Jay
Hey Jay, enjoy the channel. Im looking for a dust collector and had the 1800 on the short list. Did you determine it was not powerful enough for your new shop?
Thanks Jay. I guess you are about 9 months down the road since installing this. Could you provide some updated feedback? What would you do differently?
Very informative .Thanks!
Jay, I have the same unit with a few modifications due to a low ceiling in my basement. I think you will be pleased with the performance.
I have a 99" ceiling in my basement. According to Clear Vue I need 101" with the smaller 30 gal barrel. What is your ceiling height and how did you overcome the issues. This is the setup I really want but and stopped cold due to the 99". Thank You in advance.
Looking good.
i wasnt paying attention enough . did you put the barrel on a wheeled cart or dolly of some sort? also a piece of flex hose makes the lid connection easier to deal with..
I've missed you my brother
strong dust collector... at our millwork show, we collapsed our 36" inlet pipe the first time we turned it on not knowing all of the gates were closed.
Hey Jay how do you ground the pvc pipe,
got small rollers [truck unloader type] got any ideas for chop saw bench...? about 10ft each by about 14 inch wide
nice sketchup model!
Jay, excellent job on the installation. I never get it right the first time, and I've installed a few of these. I think you might have the 16" blower which is rated for 1950cfm, so hold on to your shirt. The noise can be significantly reduced by enclosing the air filters and reversing the airflow to exhaust at the top of your ceiling using your PVC pipe. Noise cancelling is just reversing the flow against itself within a padded environment. There is a writeup in the CVC Forum for doing this. Enjoy, and breath easy!
Can you provide a link to this writeup? I found several threads on enclosing the filters, but I want the definitive one! I have a CV1800 in a basement shop and would love to reduce the noise level. Thanks!
Thanks James. I just measured and it does look to be a 16" impeller. I'll definitely take a look at that. Thanks.
I may have missed it, but what is the CFM of this setup? I see you mentioned it's double than the old one, but not sure what it was on the old one. Thank You for sharing this install, very informative,
-Steven
Grizzly G0703p was the old unit rated at 775 CFM. Clear Vue CV1800 is rated at 1442 CFM.
I wouldnt use silicone on the filters at all. Make an extra ring out of mdf and attach it to the top off the cleanoutbox and use only tape. it makes it a lot easier when cleaning the filters. I didn't have any luck with a metal lid on mine so I made a mdf lid with a groove with weatherstripping in it, to seal the bin. The vacuum does the rest.
You Could run an Eco dot in your shop and ditch the remote switch for a smart outlet. A few enabled dust gates and Then you can just tell echo to run dust filtration for a specific tool.
Why did you go from your Grizzly Dust collector system to this? What is the advantage what is the cost difference, Which one does a better job of collecting material?
Did you order the upgrade impeller , the 16”, or is it even necessary? I’d like to have as much cfm as possible at my tablesaw , so was going to order it with the upgrade
jay how tall is ceiling in your shop?
Hi Jay! Just coming across this ,reference from Michael Alm's site. To be clear, was the motor supposed to be wired for clockwise? Also, your Sketchup model is sick good!! Did you draw all the piping and connectors? Did you draw the cyclone unit? Would you share? Finally, how loud is the unit? Thanx!
Jay, I know this is an old video but, very nice sketchup on the shop and dust collection. Did you make the pipes in sketchup or get them from the 3d Warehouse. I can't find what I am looking for in the warehouse for dust collection pipe. I have tried making pipe but that is tedious for me and nowhere near as nice as what you show here. If you made the pipes yourself, is there anyway you could put together a sketchup video on how to draw piping? I have watched many of your other sketchup vids and they are really good. Thanks.
hello sir dose the spin should clock wise or anti clock wise and what wire you have changed becuase i have one installed i am little problem sucking dust stronglly
nice setup. have you considered how you'll blow out the filter stack? This is something I've struggled with my cyclone, as I also have my filter stack in the corner. easy enough to blow out the part facing you, near impossible to get the area behind.
Get a cheap air hose blower attachment and connect a brake line from an auto parts store. Carefully shape the brake line into a hook to get behind the filter stack. Less than a $10 investment probably.
1:25 point. question 1. Did you install the electrical or did you have an electrician do it for you. Q2. If electrician, was it expensive?
What's your ceiling height? I was planning on this setup only to learn that I'm 2" shy of the stated 101" needed assuming a 30 gal barrell. Disappointed to say the least.
COOL
Where did you find the machine models for your layout in sketch up???? 3d warehouse designer name or your individual designs ?
I already had the miter saw station, workbench, assembly table, cyclone shopvac cart, lathe cart, and air cleaner cart as they were previous projects. The rest was in the 3d warehouse. Download something similar and use S for scale to get it to the sizes you need for your tools.
I'm not going anywhere near that thing....
Sincerely,
Augustus Gloop
hahahahahahaha. It took me forever to get that. Thanks, Google!
LOL
For what reason would the motor need to run in an opposite direction? Assuming that its sole purpose is used for suction.
That'd be nice to have, total cost?
Jay, I've been researching for places to acquire the type of pipe and fittings you are using and struggling to find much in my area. Do you have any sources for the "Thinwall PVC and Fittings. Perhaps you can list links to your sources in the next video where you detail the duct layout. Thanks again for sharing your talents and projects.
Gary Jones I am installing my CV ductwork now. I got the 6" x 10' Sewer and Drain D2979 pipe at a local irrigation/plumbing place - about $20/each. Got the fixtures at Lowe's, but not all have 6" and they're not in the plumbing section. Look in irrigation. The other place had fixtures, but more expensive. All this ductwork adds up!
Dave Kennedy Thanks for the suggestion.
I have a question pertaining to dust collection. I am just a hobbyist woodworker and have a 20 gallon craftsman shop vac to hook up to my tools. I don't understand the difference between a cyclone dust collector and just using the shop vac. you still have a container to dump and watching online everybody brags about nothing in the vacuum part and the dust in the cyclone part. you still have to dump the cyclone. can u explain the difference for me? Thanks. love all your videos.
The shop vac will not provide anywhere close to the amount of cubic feet of air movement like a dust collector does. yes you still have to empty the bid, but the majority of the dust is collected in the bin and not in the filters.
Jay, what piping are you using for the ductwork? PVC? Are you going to ground it? I am too lazy to ground mine.
Thin wall 6" PVC. I'll only ground it if it shocks me.
Love my Clear Vue. Had to install alone, but it was not too bad. The only time I get shocked is when I use the flex duct that goes to my lathe. It is not secured, so I can move it around and I get a jolt if I touch the end of the spiral wire.
Jay Bates what the static causing a spark with the fine dust , small amount of copper wire would be easy to install
If I asked would you give me some dimension numbers on your clear view. I am a sheet metal fabricator and would like to build my own. Great video thanks Don
Great vid. Holy cow that thing is $2000!
And yet you can easily spend more on a system that doesn’t work half as well!
I would have swapped the wires in the plug end but it is good that laying on the shelf to fix wasn't too big of a pain.
Swapping the wires on the plug end would do nothing. I needed to rewire the motor.
Ah! Not three phase then. Gotcha.
Where did you get the sketchup images for the saw stop etc...?
3d warehouse
Looks great Jay. I'm considering this for my small shop by fear this may be way overkill. Will you publish the installed HxWxD dimensions of the cyclone, filter and drum? Also curious how loud the CV1800 is compared to the Grizzly. Thanks.
The CV1800 is much louder than the Grizzly. Not unbearable with hearing protection on though. The dimensions are found on their website: www.clearvuecyclones.com/348-thickbox_default/cv1800-lh-1p-cyclone-bundle-with-filters.jpg
Oops, sorry you had to post obvious links. Looking forward to the ducting video.
Alan Marchioni I built a noise closet for mine and left room for the air compressor. I'm very pleased with the reduction in noise and can carry on a normal conversation ten feet or so away. I wouldn't run it without the closet.
Why did you purchase the Clearvue over an Oneida system?
I see in the preview for the piping video you changed blast gates, was this on recommendation with the ClearVue or a perceived upgrade from the one's you previously designed?
I went with the ones Bill Pentz recommended. I have no desire to make any more and the cost savings isn't much with 6"
Thanks Jay, I had forgot about the diameter difference.
I suppose at that flow rate, collecting dust will not be a problem but do you have plans to enclose you miter saw? It always seems to make the biggest mess when I use mine.
Yes. I already put better wings on the side. Dust collection results on the miter saw with the new collector are Kapex like
Is this dust collection upgrade due to the problems you had with your nose?
hey jay, will this work with powder coating powder?? just asking thanks
Ruben cyclones work with everything, also fine powder
Hi Jay . Awesome vids if I was to ask would you give me some dimensions of your clear view I could use for my application . I am a 35 yr. sheet metal fabricator and would like to build my own . Keep cost down
don sigurdson Go to Bill Pentz's web site. TONS of information including build guides for an entire DC system.
A little overkill on those sheet metal screws for the Dust barrel, no? Really cool setup, and kudos for making it all work in the confined space!
Not overkill. Holes are drilled in the take off for a reason. Also, the take off will experience some lateral forces when the lid is bent up slightly when removing the barrel.
I agree that screws are needed, but those screws seemed a bit longer than necessary
I'm guessing that new years sale Clear Vue was having had something to do with this? :) I was really tempted to pull the trigger on one, but ended up going with a Laguna C|Flux 3 since I'm not ready to commit to a wall-mounted unit yet. I just finished assembling mine, and, yeah it was about 5 hours just to put the thing together. I've been working through the duct design, and like you was planning on 6" PVC, so I'm certainly interested in in your next video about that as that's next up for me as well.
I paused the video on your 3D shop layout and noticed something. One of the challenges I've run into in figuring out garage shop layout (I also have a 2-bay shop) is making sure that tools have at least 8 feet of infeed and outfeed. It seems you skipped that on the jointer. I'm guessing there's only maybe 5 ft of infeed there. Your old shop layout had the jointer over in the corner, so, is that not an issue for you? Do you not commonly come upon situations where you need to joint something 6, 7, or 8 ft long?
The new layout has the same amount of infeed and outfeed for the jointer as the last layout. I haven't had a need to joint anything longer. But if I do I can move it easily. It's on a mobile base. Plan for the 99% of times and adapt for the 1% of times.
overall costs? how this new collector adds to the shop? clean air. 99.9% dust collection. management wise how this makes your shop a better shop. hey make a video about it!
I didn't see the relay in your notes. Where did you get that from? I would love to have a remote
It came with the cyclone kit. www.clearvuecyclones.com/supporting-products/43-electrical-box.html
ok thanks.
Jay was this filmed BEFORE or AFTER your surgery ? I feel for you ! You sound miserable :( Sinus issues or horrible. I hope you feel better soon.
This was last week. There was a flu virus going around my wife's work. We didn't get it but we both got a cold. Which is why I sounded a bit off in the video.
I hear you. It is really bad down here in florida also. Hope you feel better soon.
just looked up the cost of this unit. nevermind i'll have to keep moving my shop vac around =/
It that thing made of PVC? (the blue parts)
MDF
What is the distance from the wall to garage door rail?
26" from the wall to the door rails.
Wayne and you are both welcome to stay at our place in South Florida to hook me up #DustCollectionTour2017 ... I need this in my life but this all sounds like French to me and seems super intimidating!
You had a grizzly dust collector which appeared to be a great dust collector why did you upgrade to this one?
the amount of CFM was doubled
The barrel is inconvenient to empty the shavings. Need a wide opening.
Hi Jay,
Did you get a stock CV1800, or upgrade the impellar to 16" (a sort of CVMAX / CV1800 hybrid) I'm finally about to commit to the purchase, but I have a 20" planer and want to make certain I've got enough suction.
Jeremy Sleeper
I was wondering the same thing . I’m debating to purchase this system myself and am thinking the more cfm the better, especially when it comes to extracting dust from my table saw
Electricity not dangerous when you know what you do!
just subbed to you - pretty good workshop btw, love it
Yes it is.
Thomas Pate OK
1442 cfm...mite need some heavy straps for your shoes....lol...awesome system...
Ok just read the instructions and they are recommending only running the motor 4 times an hour max if it’s for a brief amount of time, as it’s hard on the motor . That’s concerning, as typically I’m going to be doing multiple cuts in an hour
1440+ cfm! Keep small tools, pets, and children away! Anxious to see it in action!
When you mentioned following the instructions in my mind I could hear a lot of wives laughing... lol
With the motor wired, it would have been quicker to do a test run to ensure that it was turning in the correct rotation while it was on the bench. This is a trick that most electricians will tell you.
Jay, I always hesitate to post, and please correct me if I'm demonstrating my ignorance here. It looks to me that you have the setup of the air ramp spiral going opposite the spin of the impeller (based on what I read on Bill's website). Quoting directly off his page:
"I get too many questions about impeller rotation. What you need for ideal performance is your impeller turning with the blades rounded portion leading and the cyclone built so the inlet causes the incoming air to turn in exactly this same direction.
If you turn your impeller backward it will make a ton of noise. If your airflow in the cyclone does not match the direction the impeller turns then your motor must do more work to reverse that spin and you lose considerable performance. Remember that the airflow inside the cyclone spins in the same direction going down as it does when it comes back up and exits the cyclone into the blower."
So...you mentioned in the video the reversing of wiring, but I just wanted to verify that you ultimately wired up so that the rounded portions of the impeller were leading into the outlet to the fan stack.
If that is, in fact the case, it seems to me that your impeller is having to work harder to reverse direction, robbing you of performance. I only mention this because I am currently building my own setup and my impeller is identical to yours (bought from Clear Vue) AND my cyclone looks identical to yours. As I compare the relative flows, they are opposite of others I have seen (such as Spagnulo's setup shown here on CZcams).
I hope I made sense with how I worded all this, and would love a reply if you have time. Thanks for the vid post and explanations!
Clear Vue said it has a slight decrease in performance vs the correct side intake but my shop layout prohibits using the opposite side intake.
Very good...
Great presentation excellent tips ..
I'm Brazilian and do hobby work with pallets ... if you can take a look at my work ...

For flanges these work great and will hold up much better than the HVAC. Active Air HAF6 Flange Dual Kit, 6" www.amazon.com/dp/B004K69J6G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_94DQybY8S2481
$2,000 without a collection bin!?! Yikes. Seems like maybe a bit of overkill for that size shop. Or am I missing that this was a sponsored vid?
My four year old ClearVue CV1800 just failed. Apparently, we cannot start and stop the machine repeatedly for less than 15 minutes without burning out the motor. As many woodworkers operate, I cycled the Cyclone as, for example, I milled wood, moving from my table saw to jointer to planer. Well, this doesn't suit the 5hp motor. ClearVue is unapologetic about this operating advice NOT existing in their Owner's Manual nor in their sales process nor in the numerous videos available on CZcams (yours included). Believe me, this is a major limitation and an expensive pain to replace the motor.
Looks like that setup is going to really suck!
… why not just reverse the wires on the plug rather than crawl up behind the thing to rewire the motor?
That would do nothing. The diagram shows what is necessary to reverse the motor.
Fair enough, I just went back and looked at the diagram. My bad.
Q1
Wow that company copied Marius a lot.
Marius Hornberger? You're not being serious, are you?
Unless he copied them. Someone copied someone because there are a lot of identical bits on that dust collector.
The Metal Butcher blower housing and impeller designs are pretty standard. Also, clearvue has a relationship with Bill Penz, who has been doing this longer than Marius has been alive. Check out Bill's website on dust collection--very informative.
THE HELIX IS FOR THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE OF THE EARTH, IT WILL WORK WELL FOR AUSTRALIA NEWZEALAND, SOUTH AMERICA ETC BUT WOULD BE INEFFICIENT FOR NORTHER HEMISPHERE.
