Slave History of Charleston

  • The old slave quarters of the Aiken family reveal many stories of slave life and culture in Charleston in the 19th century. Ironworking and the ability to cultivate rice are two of the many technical skills the slaves brought to the United States, contributing to Charleston's economic and rich cultural development.

@@kufarimahdi9636 I agree with you and Eric Givens. I'm a descendant of Sam and Annie Aiken; great-grandparents who were slaves on the Aiken Plantation. Let them tell it, 'slaves were never sold at the market downtown'

So, what happens when they tear it down? What happens when they tear all of the plantations, slave cabins, and this market down? And then they get rid of all of the confederate history. Being that we have an influx of immigrants, why not put up monuments to the Latinos and recent African immigrants who have contributed? Will you then forget about slavery? Is that what you wish for them to do? Forget about it?

We taught them our ways and they snaked my people by becoming apart of *The United States Corporation* ( WHICH IS NOT A COUNTRY) and tearing up our land." *OBEY*

I lived in Charleston for a year. I lived on James Island two blocks from McLeod plantation.
I love history and historic towns with character, however I never got used to driving to Starbucks or Earth Fare, and seeing the the eerily well preserved slave quarters at the light before the draw bridge.
I guess its the same feeling some get when visiting places like Auschwitz.

This woman makes me sick to hear her speak of the Aiken family's pride of their treatment of their slaves. Oh they were nice giving colorful expensive paint to their cages and also a door to close their bedrooms for a little privacy. But what takes the cake is giving the slave freedom to walk the streets. Dogs tags to identify which slave owner each slave belonged to. I live in this "Historic" town of Charleston SC and I ask myself every day why all these tourists keep coming here to relive and celebrate the days of slavery. Let's not forget who and how the city was built. It was built on the "blood sweat and tears" of your truly,,,the slave

Another thing is with one established religion already passed as law in 1993 and Islam gaining ground here where is the history of slavery in relation to "Established Religions. Hagel's Master-Slave Dialectic can work in many spheres starting with out minds.

As a descendant of great great grandparents who lived in Charleston,South Carolina as slaves it horrifies me to hear that woman talk about how well treated they were by the slave owners. We were for the most part left by those men a bit of ancestry that our ancestors had no choice in giving to us except through force. I have visited Charleston to see where my grandparents and my mother were born. I will go back to see family who still live down there. Unfortunately we have a remnant of the Middleton plantation as some of my distant cousins still have the name Middleton. My great grandmother was named Mary Alice Middleton.

Did she say the slaves were brought here because of their "talents". The way she depicts this history of slavery is as if they had a choice! As if they were coming for a vacation or relocating for work! NO THEY WERE BEATEN, RAPED, TORTURED, FORCED, RIPPED FROM THEIR LAND! Just because they had paint on their walls did not make it any better!! If you are going to tell it, tell it like it was!! HARSH!!

I'm disgusted by the choice of music which makes this whole piece sound benign. As for the historian, it was pitiful to hear her hesitating when she was correcting herself from saying "slaves" to "enslaved" Africans. Highlighting their skills would be commendable if their intelligence wasn't still being omitted... and don't get me started about religion as a place where they could "truly be free" - how ignorant!!!

"When nearly all free blacks were destitute, [William] Ellison was wealthy and well-established. He owned a large plantation and more slaves than all but the richest white planters” (Johnson). When the Civil war broke out, 1,500 free black men then formed the first all-black company in the Civil War called the 1st Louisiana Native Guard CSA. “The Native Guard were French Speaking Creoles. Among those who joined the militia were successful architects, brick masons, dentists, doctors and carpenters” (blackpast.org). This confederate company also had the first black officer in the civil war.

She didn't "white wash", she told the truth. There were a lot of positives to her story that I appreciate from her. She stated that Africans were brought her because of their skill, most of the slaves came from Sierra Lionell were they were well versed in rice cultivation and iron work, and that most of the iron work was done by slaves in the city of Charleston. That's much better than history trying to imply that we were only brought her because we were dark and couldn't fit in enough to run away, or that we had no skills when we came. We know that slaves were beat, forced to work, raped, stole, ect….however, let's move pasts that and learn of the positives that they did do ...even in their capitivity.

I don't have an issue with her explaining, in a scientific logical sort of way, about the difference in building structures here and in other southern areas. But it got weird towards the end as she described it as more of a 'resticted movement' situation rather than slavery. The music and her soothing tone of voice is just creeping me out. Anything sounds great when said peacefully and with acoustic guitar! WTF
