Antonio Perkins was the greatest punt-returner for OU in the modern era. Hanta Yo

The great QB Charles Thompson had "Hanta Yo" (an Oklahoma Indian saying, I think) written on the handkerchief he wore during games, if I remember correctly.

Wild seeing an OU team playing defense lol

Really now is more of the exception. Most of their history they have played good defense. Even in the 90s they had solid defensive units. The focus has changed with TBOW gone. So lets see if we get back to our roots.

"For 13 straight quarters the Sooners have shut out their opponents".....impressive.
Today I'm hoping to shut the other team down for 13 MINUTES - THAT would be a miracle in today's game.

You missed out on this team in the early 2000s... they were Top 5 in defense

BV is back, baby! The gang is back together, and hopefully we can trend back towards these types of defensive expectations.

I'm a big OU fan, and what is this word "defense" that you speak of? Not sure we know what that word means - can you please explain.

I was there. The only Rose Bowl I'll ever attend and OU won. Good times.

This win was extra nice because of how it pissed off all the pac 10 big 10 people. Apparently it still does and that's hilarious.
Hopefully what's old is new again and we can get this type of defense going forward. These guys were incredible more often than not. You could see the fear of turning the ball over from opposing offenses. Boomer Sooner.

This was such a frustrating game to watch. Hybl was mediocre at best and still had trouble hitting Will Peoples who was wide open all day long. If White had been in at QB . . . . . . . the game score would have been obscene.

    • @Bigfishfun333

They'd have "hung half-a-hundred by halftime", like Barry used to say.

Did OU whiff on that last kick off return let Q get back on the field, even though he declined?

Man, I miss early to mid 2000s college football. Miami finishing up their run just as USC was powering up theirs. I always wished those two programs 2000s peaks coincided. I've never seen a team compare to the 2001 Miami team; they're the best college football team I've seen in my 39 years. Oklahoma with those Roy Williams teams and then AD comes in. Having Peterson and Reggie Bush at the same time in college football was awesome. Good times.

Nate Hybl, the proverbial won in spite of QB. Oklahoma didn't win because of Hybl. the defense and Quentin Griffin carried him.

Yeah he was the backup soo I'd say he did pretty good. Future Heisman winner Jason White was injured earlier in the year.

So how did the Rose Bowl end up stuck with Oklahoma instead of Iowa?
(Washington State/Iowa would have been a better game- I hated those early 2000s OU teams that basically played hide the QB and were a defense without an offense)

    • @colegeorge2451

Since Ohio State got the national championship birth the Orange Bowl got the next pick on who to invite and invited Iowa so the Rose Bowl got OU!

Man, butthurt like Keith Jackson 20 years later. Pretty sad. OU needed it to have trophies from all the major bowls. As to how bad their offense was, it sure did a number on this west coast defense.

Iowa has been the epitome of boring college football for decades now. OU had a great QB that was out for 5he season during g this game. Josh Heupal, and Jason White were exciting college QBs to watch, andthey were the early 2000s QBs you speak of. Nate Hybl was a backup. Mark Clayton, and Quentin Griffith went in to NFL careers, and Jason Whute would have if he didn't have such horrible knees. He had multiple surgeries on both knees. Sam Bradford had the same problem later on. The Hybl pass at 7:09 doesn't look like "hide the QB" to me.

I thought this would be at the start of the video: WSU'S first play from scrimmage....a trick play QB Gesser pitched out to Colin Henderson (a backup QB who is the son of former 1960s QB Jerry Henderson) Colin threw a long pass downfield, complete to Devard Darling. But, sadly, WSU didn't score.
