175+ 👍
👍🏻 This one's for you
Die-Hardman is surprisingly one of the best actors in this game.
Agreed
The best, IMO.
Honestly - couldn't believe the Game Awards nominated Mads & Norman.... and not Tommy too. 😞 SMH The man is litetally everyone's favorite, but gets zero nominations? What gives.
@@KabbalahSherry to be honest mads deserved more than them both. His scenes with sam were so emotional
Him and Sam are my favorites so far !
Then when you realise he wasn’t even the one that pulled the trigger, it hurts even more. The whole game we thought it was him, and even he himself has blamed himself for killing is life saviour. What a great plot twist and acting.
Press F To Pay Respects
plot twist. lol
truss yeah plot twist.
nava. LOL plot twist
@@nava93s HAHAHHAAHAHAHAH
Fun Fact: Tommie Earl Jenkins performed this scene in one take.
Wh-where'd you hear that?
@HeadHunter Neil Druckmann has joined the chat
@HeadHunter Lol, Troy Baker did his daughter dying scene in The Last Of Us at least 20 times
Yeah but Last of Us wasnt that great lol
@@ttime441 You do realize it's seen as more impressive to give a fantastic performance in one take, rather than several. Right? You can't be that dumb.
Surprisingly the best actor in the game, i just fucking loved his character
I'll take Mads,hes a genius.
Julian Duepre Mads is awesome too.
Yup - should have been nominated right alongside Mads & Norman. As much as I love Norman... did he even have as many lines to read as Die-Hardman?! 🤷🏻♀️😒 I mean somebody needs to give Tommy Earl Jenkins SOMETHING, if they ain't gonna give him a Game Award, cuz this shit was damn-near Oscar worthy.
KabbalahSherry yeah absolutely, Norman performance wasn’t impressive at all, just because he’s the main character of the game, he’s in the list
@@nava93s I think Norman did a great performance, he's just got very hard competition
Tommie Earl Jenkins’ acting is INCREDIBLE in this scene, good lord. Some of the best acting I’ve ever seen in my life.
Agreed
It fucking blew me away. Never expected his character to hit that depth, while also knowing that the game HAD to throw me something more in regards to him.
And to know it wasn't even him who pulled the trigger in the end, couldn't bring himself to kill his friend & former General... but still blamed himself anyway, all those years. 😭💔🤧 That just broke me! Damned incredible. Should have nominated him for acting for the Game Awards. So unfair he didn't get nominated just because he's not some big named celebrity. Such 🐂💩.
Same here, i was super impressed and empathic towards his character. it was magnificient. Something we dont see enough i think
Oscar worthy
Real talk though: The character animations in this game are incredible. Usually when a game tries to make their characters look and animate as life-like as possible with the aid of performance capture, they typically suffer from the dreaded "Uncanny Valley" effect. Death Stranding also uses performance capture and yet the game somehow manages to avoid the uncanny valley effect with it's characters.
Not going to lie, that's quite an impressive feat on KojiPro's part.
Digital Foundry has a great video on the tech in Death Stranding and they said that the hyperrealistic eyes manage to circumvent the uncanny valley effect.
Still a little uncanny valley when a character smiles. But it's on the good side of the valley this time.
That's because Kojima is a master at this matter. He analised every single movement of the real life actors. It's said by Norman Reedus, Kojima captured actor's every moment. To streching their legs to scratching back of their head
@@yeungscs I thought Amelie looked the most uncanny, which is kind of fitting when you find out what she is.
@@chieferik7964 She surely is the most uncanny since she doesn't even exist in real life lmao
This is easily one of the best voice acted scenes I’ve ever heard. To act with that emotion, especially in a recording studio is absolutely stunning.
Was is it not motion captured too? With audio?
AnotherBot:D possibly. Doesn’t change the fact. It’s hard to act when you are opposite of no one
@@nanashi1173 ?? Hes not alone in the studio? Its a giant open studio where they do motion and voice capture simultaneously. Other actors are there doing the same thing. Exact same thing as God of War.
This was definetly mocapped
@@nanashi1173 Well I think you reached a dead-end now😏
At first I was like, "Yeah but, why is he telling all this to Sam?"
Few minutes later I was like
"OOOHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"
Exactly, he knew exactly who same was and the circumstances of his existence.
Well that’s why you get the hint about cliffs wife Lisa BRIDGES. Right before this speech. I get the feeling Sam has an idea but isn’t certain after hearing the mother’s last name is his own. Explains why he looks pissed when die hard man says he killed cliff. He just heard that it might be his dad but by the end he knows for sure.
It took you five minutes to figure that out? I had it pegged from the first few BB flashbacks.
I mean if you think about Sam loved lou and that could be the reason why he's telling. After we're fooled to think that die hard man killed lou's dad cliff.
Tommy Earl Henkings nailed his performance. 10/10 grade A acting.
100% agreed
S legend of legends
The saddest thing is that John can't really comprehend that Cliff held no ill will towards him. He's so filled with regret he has to imagine that Cliff hated him, that Cliff had to find an excuse to forgive him when there was nothing to forgive.
Yeah, John partook in unethical, maybe justifiable research, but he didn't personally wrong Cliff.
I honestly think deep down he knew Cliff never held any ill feelings towards but it was more the fact that John couldn't forgive himself for what he had done and felt he deserved punishment for his actions, he thought Cliff would give him that but when he didn't he turned to Sam instead but eventually understood that neither of the two could bring themselves to kill John as he honestly was punishing himself all these years by pretending to be a man in a mask with no will or soul of his own.
“And I LOVED HIM.”
God it gives me chills every time, such an amazing performance and such much emotion and hurt in his face
And they didn't even nominate him for best performance at TGA... smh
Im genuinely confused.
Die-hardman is probably the best performed (both voiced and acted) video game character in history based on this scene alone.
Before this scene he was kinda just a mysterious figure behind a mask. Nothing stood out. But once i saw this scene i had serious goosebumps. Its so well acted and voiced and ive never seen anything like this in a game before.
Maybe TGA hasn't completed the game yet lol
Jorn Tumrongwit Haha exactly, Judy must’ve not seen this scene.
Tell me about it, it’s bullshit. They nominated Mads and Norman (both did an incredible job, but come on, Tommie Earl Jenkins stole the show with this performance). He should’ve replaced Norman.
@@SuperSaiyan3985 exactly
Norman's performance was great, but I did not feel as if there is anything noteworthy to his performance. It's just "great" overall.
However Mads' and Tommie's were exceptional. Mads totally delivered in the part where he talks to Sam at and near the end, and Tommie, I think we all know why.
Once you beat the game I feel that Die-Hardman is one of the most tragic characters in the game. This scene when viewed with the context of the ending is so sad because John really loved Cliff and he was forced to kill him and watch him die.
Dominik Santiago Exactly. I feel so sorry for him, all he wanted to do is repay Cliff for all the times he saved his life but it ended in the worst of ways.
And you realize that Bridget / Amelie is the real villain of this game.
It's shown that he didn't even pull the trigger. The president did; we see her hand on his gun and her finger on the trigger in one scene showing what happened.
@@jacobp.2024 What I mean by "forced to kill him" is that Bridget ordered John to kill Cliff and he still had the gun in his hand but couldn't pull the trigger so she did but still, he had a role in Cliff's death and that's why he breaks down at the end.
Except that HE didnt kill him?
Classic Heartman. Dead in the middle of the speech.
I laughed harder at this than I should have
That was so perfect lol.
And the way how he woke up the moment sam was about to leave is just so perfect 👌
Sam: A month on the outside. How long on the inside?
Deadman: Trust me when I tell you, you don't want to know.
Based on Sam's experience on the WW1 Beach, 1 second = roughly 3 hours, so 1 month would be around 900 years, and if Sam is around 40 years old...
... Cliff has been stuck on the inside for what must feel like 430,000 years looking for his BB :'(
but why didn't people not on the beach age during this?
God that's insane.. so sam was stuck on his own beach for like 900 years but for him it probably didn't feel like it (i hope)
@@gk8644 they aged a month, are you mentally retarded?
He looks real. How is this ingame graphics wow
Video is about 10 minutes long, but its done using 3D scanning. Same technique used in Metal Gear Solid V. Skip forward to see all the cameras set up at all the different angles.
czcams.com/video/ruj3oeDnXTY/video.html
Well it IS in-engine. But the cutscenes are basically just recorded video files to save space. It’s why cutscenes look just slightly better.
@@xShotgunSurgeryx I don't think so. I think these are in engine in real time. I cannot prove it though. I guess we will see with the pc version if they scale with resolution and so on
face motion is faster and more realistic
man technology is beginning to be terrifying. Imagine next year video game characters look like themselves in cgi trailers then the next look like actual people (except for creatures and characters built to look animated unless you'd like them to end up like sonic in trailer 1)
@@xShotgunSurgeryx this is all in real-time. Not cg.
Can we talk about how brilliant and complex the dialogue "That gun won't help you here" was used here?
"Suicide won't fix anything, and it sure as shit won't do anything to an EE or one of the major BTs," is part of the metaphor to me, lol.
I really liked that part. Fighting doesn't help, connecting is how people can truly overcome things.
Feels-BadMan
"I- loved him, as much as I loved her."
I guarantee he loved Cliff MUCH more than Bridget. A man who disabled the security systems so Cliff could take his baby and escape, who held his own soldiers under his command at bay so they wouldn't shoot him, and who didn't even pull the trigger when he was supposed to... Yeah he loved Cliff way more.
i feel like if there was a way to sacrifice himself to save cliff he wouldve done it, but they were too weak to do anything against all the soldiers
@@0xVENx0 You, you get me. That moment where he let Cliff take him hostage, he probably would have let Cliff shoot him, but at that moment he needed to stay alive to be the “hostage”.
Really impressive acting, and the animation almost looked real for a second.
Just because it's animation doesn't mean it isn't real.
This is more than animation, this is performance capture. They’re capturing the actors’ facial expressions, body movements, everything.
Diehardman’s VA is Tommie Earl Jenkins and I hope there is some award or something he can win for death stranding because he deserves recognition.
Noah Walker Don’t call him a VA, because he’s not. He’s the straight up actor for DHM.
SuperSaiyan3985 you say that like being a voice actor is less respectable then being an actor. He played a voice actor here he’s a good voice actor
@@thepopo592 No he isn't. He did not read dialogue off of a script in a booth. He was in a mocap suit with tracking dots on his face acting opposite someone else on a sound stage. I'm not trying to diminish voice acting, it's just that it's a smaller task than physically acting like Tommie and the rest of the cast did.
Don’t know about you, but I couldn’t stop crying from his confession until the very end of the game
kuwabara i didn't really do that much, but after watching it again I sure as hell am
defiantly a remarkable scene. Loyalty and guilt in its purest form in an individual character. I'm not sure how I feel about the grand narrative of a "New America" in the sense its tethering to Hideo Kojimas possible analysis of the modern day and state of the US. But either way this instance was a pretty neat story element.
Robosoldier11 yeah I didn’t like the whole story could kind of be boiled down to “Make America Great Again: the game” I kept hoping a curtain would be pulled and reveal that it was all bullshit propaganda but even that turned out to only be partly true. The game treats Bridgett’s motivations and end goal of reconnecting everyone like they were ultimately genuine, even if her methods were fucked. I couldn’t shake the feeling maybe America wasn’t worth saving in the first place. Guess this isn’t that kind of story. I’m too pessimistic.
ShotgunSurgery I mean idk about you but I think kojema lays the blame of the division on “Make America great again.” Because If you look at some of the side entires there are characters that take an obvious snipe at modern political elements. Which personally I think is a bit jaded given it’s pretty bias in its analysis.
Wtf did they do a 3D scan of the inside of his mouth too? Usually teeth look either too perfect or uncanny as hell, but here it looks so realistic.
When they are acting this, they have a camera in front of their mouth
this kind of acting from die-hardman seems now gone from the mainstream media.
nostalgic
That's theatrical acting for you
haha huhu ok boomer
@@aryareddy6583 so a boomer is just anyone over 16 now, huh? Thanks for using the word so much it lost its meaning
Its something here but in game it was something else entirely. All you see of die-hardman is this monotone dude giving orders, congratulating you on job well done etc then when the mask comes off you see this. I had chills all over watching it.
It really makes this scene o so more powerful. Usually you see him as this commanding person giving out orders and saying where u need to go etc, but here you have him pouring out his heart to sam for the first time.
It's either this guy or Cliff takes the cake for being the best actor in the game.
Sadly he wasn't nominated for the VGAs.
Everyone keeps ignoring how perfect Troy Baker was in this.
@@littlekitsune1 Troy isn't black, that's why.
@@Danuxsy Neither is Mads Mikkelsen, I don't see your point
@@Aaprottimaruna RACISM TOWARD WHITE PEOPLPE!!
I can’t stop thinking about this game.... thank you kojima you gave us another masterpiece
In the age of mocap for games this is one of the best scenes I've ever seen. The detail and fidelity in the character models in this game along with the job done by the actors really bring their scenes to life. The subtle twitch of the mouth and raising of the brow makes carries just as much if not more weight than the spoken dialogue and makes the characters that much more believable. Tommie Earl Jenkins owned this scene.
It actually kind of is, this is amazing
It’s crazy how good games can look these days, imagine how they’ll look 10 years from now.
This deserves an oscar or sumshit
Bafta
I will not be surprised if this game wins the Game of the Year award. The work done here deserves it.
Oh yeah game of the year for sure
actor said that for him this scene feels like it was real and they did it from 1st try, and after this scene whole team was crying
yeah and I WAS TOO
i honestly think the same thing. ever since i've seen this scene for the first time in the beginning it's been stuck in my mind. superb acting
the ending reveal made this scene even more tragic
It makes everything that the Porter's does more fucked up and especially at the beginning when they told Sam to get rid of his BB I know the ending to Death Stranding and can't wait for more
11:54 holy shit you can even see the snot running down his nose. I have never seen that in a videogame before, that's crazy detailed. Awesome performance too.
I was thinking the same thing!
Man what a scene. V.A is really good. Really tugs your “string”
Tug my strand baby
NOT A V.A. He is the full-on actor.
This was easily the best acting performance I've ever seen in a game.
Awesome actor. Stole the show at the ending. Didn't connect with his character along the game that much as he was a typical chief/quest-giver character, considered him more of an end-game vilain, as the plot suggested, but this one scene turned it all around. Superb acting & very touching scene.
Yeah Kojima dropped bits and pieces of "be skeptical of the director" all throughout the game - and even in Deadman's lines to Sam in this very scene. Huge subversion of expectations and it was brilliantly pulled off.
men rarely cry but when this happens it tears your soul apart.
Give this man an award , that acting is top-notch
This scene should be nominated to an oscar. (8:59 - 12:14)
You hardly ever see this kind of acting in actual MOVIES these days
Tommie Earl Jenkins absolute legend 🙌
probably my favorite acting in the whole game (mainly from 8:40 till the end of the video)
ladies and gents your not gonna believe it die-hardman's name is john Blake McClane
kojima he'll hit you even if your not paying attention.
@@SuperSaiyan3985 he's called john blake mcclane, it's in a document about his path you get after you finish the game
Just the built up is amazing its so hard to do in those games my god he did it so good
man that acting!
Die Hardman did nothing wrong 😢
Now I understand why he say he and Sam is 'deathless freak'. I thought he have repatriate like Sam........
He just an unlucky lucky man....
tommy went so hard honestly. the way the facial tracking and capture recorded the most tiny details of his expressions was some of the most impressive parts of this game. his role was seriously some of the most emotive and convincing roles of the entire game. i hope one day he is recognized for this!
This is why mocap exists in videogames.
AlfioBot Performance cap*
This scene rival the best acting there is in Any amazing movies there are.... IT WAS JUST INCREDIBLE and will remain in my heart for a long long time
Better acting than most Hollywood “actors”
absolutely agree
Tommie Earl Jenkins IS a Hollywood actor lol.
11:58 The Best Scene in Video Game History
It truly will be a scene that'll stay stuck in my mind for a long time
Thats intense guilt. The sad part is that he didnt even pull the trigger

Knowing that john was confessing to cliff's son.. Makes this scene 10 times more powerful
does die hardman knew that sam is cliff son?
@@Riko478 yeah
@@Riko478 He... should? In this scene it doesn't seem like he does - but at this point the audience doesn't either. At least, not if you deduced it already.
Most of the game I was kinda lukewarm to Die Harman's character but this scene was absolutely amazing. Serious props to Tommie Earl Jenkins for this killer performance.
"You know why they call me Die-Hardman? Because he wouldn't let me die."
That shit hit me hard
Holy shit is he a good actor or what?
Actually crying in the mocap studio. Guys a great actor!
The facial animation in these scene is fucking insane, it really did justice to the performance... one of the best scenes in the game, and for this game that's really saying something
this scene made me cry and the followed scenes with cliff made me cry like a bitch
Holy shit i just realised that he technically started the Death Stranding
@HeadHunter wait, how did Amelie/Bridget killing Sam cause the Death Stranding?
@@lightkikib3355 By reviving him she upset the balance of life and death thus causing an instability, the Extinction Entity is not supposed to go around reviving people and turning them immortal.
Extinction Entity: you get to be immortal, you get to be immortal, you all get to be immortal.
Universe: oh well, look like i have to press the nuke button.
@HeadHunter and then the ending does that mean that Sam will become a extinction entity?
I Cried with him. god i love this scene lol.
I was starting to hate die-hardman before this scene, once this scene happened and seeing how much regret he had started to make me really feel for him. Then later finding out what actually happened with Cliff Unger, Die-Hardman, and Sam had me In tears.
That breakdown is defiantly one of my highlights of the game.
Same! Im wondering what music was used in this scene
Shit, I hope to see Tommie in more stuff now after this scene. Guy's an amazing actor!
I love his emotional presidential speech. He is true grade actor
I find it kinda funny how his first speech in this video i find kinda boring and very president-like but the second one is SO heartfelt and emotional and just the best thing ever. Such great range in acting.
1:41 Meanwhile, Heartman is laying in the couch and experience his another deaths
One of the funniest things ever honestly hahah 😂
I'm surprised there aren't enough viewers to see this beautiful acting.
What I really like about this game is the chapters. Why? Because each chapter which is aptly named with a character that will be its centerpiece gives a very interesting look into very interesting characters in a very interesting world. You just can't wait to see how messed up the next person is.
sam like dude u didnt kill my dad that woman did why are u crying
@HeadHunter yup it was in his hands and his finger was on the trigger so she had control and u know "BANG"
To be fair, Sam does not find out the whole truth until after this scene
Best cry ever of the 2010s.
I started crying because die hardman was crying. Damn, Tommie is awesome and Kojima is freaking genius
Idk how actors MEMORIZE like 3 pages of dialog THEN act so it doesn't seem like memorization but just natural :o amazing!
SAME like if i wouldn't even be able to remember like 4 sentences haha 😅
Rewatching this after seeing the ending knowing the fact that he is confessing to Cliff's son who is now all grown up, hits you in a different way
What incredible acting

Die-Hardmans confession part is one of the best scenes in the game. It seems they put more budget into this scene coz his facial expressions was something else. I couldnt tell if it was real or not. Great actors all around snd a flawed but great game.

13:09 the quote always makes sense
Absolutely amazing acting
Incredible acting!
I just saw this scene and Jesus Christ this was amazingly acted. And looked so real. I believe every second
I don't know why this scene still didn't get many views yet, after almost 6months this only get 77,756views, maybe not many players actually beat it through here. But this I think perhaps THE BEST video game performance that I have ever seen... I hope in the future, or after this PC released, people can have more attention to this actor.
Bro Heart man is literally just dead during this speech. Idk why but that made me laugh. Lmao
Someone has to say it...the Oscars should add "best perfomances in Video Games". This game or others, like Tlou 2 or God of war, red dead 2 etc. are the future of gaming. It should be honered aswell.
Incredible.
I searched for this scene because i didn't really believe it was as realistic and convincing as i saw!
the graphics in this game of the faces were first class! great game, when John is crying that almost looks like real footage
This scene should have got a Oscar. Games amazing conceptually and is an amazing fantasy story.
Tommie fuckin' KILLED this scene, he was absolutely robbed of a nomination on the game awards
Tommie Earl Jenkins has the perfect "president voice".
People should cast him as president in more things.
I love these scene, but with that said...this scene is in need of one of those 10x facial animations videos.
Best acting I’ve ever seen in game and some of the best acting I’ve ever seen in anything period. Oh my god man.
