  • After completing my first Iron Butt Challenge: the Saddle Sore 1000 (Ride 1000 miles under 24 hours), I have complied my top mistakes and things that worked best for me. I go over just how my breaks were spent, what helped keep me motivated, and the rookie mistakes I made while trying to get certified through the Iron Butt Association. I am happy to share that I have finally received my IBA Number, and stay tuned until the end of the video to see what's next on the horizon. Thanks for tuning in and make sure to subscribe for more moto-related content!

    I have tremendous respect for you! I didn't succeed in my first attempt. I couldn't sleep the night before. I started late because the gas station I planned to start at was closed because an employee tested positive. 30 minutes later I found a open station. I didn't wear or pack warm enough clothes. It's been 85 and 90 for a month. My ride started 50 degrees. Cold for the South! I rode all tense in the chilly dark armadillo infested wilderness. By sunrise I was in pain from the tension. I learned several lessons the hard way! I'm going to get this done.

    You've got my respect. I could hardly think of a bike less suited to this trip. Not only is the range terrible, but it's also not the most comfortable either. When I did mine, it was on an ST1300 with the Exxon Valdez 7 gal gas tank, so I could do over double your range, so a lot less stops. Think it took me about 18 hours; I can see how the time can catch up with you simply because of all the stops - they do add up! You go for it, girl!

I probably yawned 100x then the sun came up and felt much better. We started at 3am and finished 11pm. 1156 miles with 3 friends and it was awesome! We’re planning 1500+ in 24hrs in April 🤪

    Congratulation on your SS1000. My first SS1000 I also spent way too long on lunch (almost an hour) and dinner (over an hour but was waiting for rush hour to let up) but my gas stops were pretty short and I was able to run between 210 to 250 miles between gas stops on my 2018 Road Glide. Having to stop for gas every 100 miles really adds to the challenge so great job. My second SS1000 was an in Washington state so more secondary roads for lower average moving speed (over 10mph slower than all freeway average) but much quicker food stops so my overall time was almost the same (18.5 hours each trip). I also ride solo so able to set my own pace and stops and also depart about 3:30 or 4:00am so most of the ride is in daylight which makes it easier for me to stay alert.

    Congrats great job on a sporty, Solo, Iron Butt is better. If your riding partner is not into 100% like you it will never be successful. when i do my Ironbutt attempts I use my KTM super Adventure now. I get 330 Miles per tank and I carry extra fuel bottle just in case. I stop every 250 miles for gas and breaks . next attempt for you B.B.1500
    Tips it is all about mental prep do the route in your head when planning multiple times so you know it hands down . Find all the gas stops before you leave and if you can add a fuel bottle just in case your gas station is closed or power is out. I was an BB gold attempt and and the area i was in had a power outage because a storm rolled trough 1/2 hour before i arrived so that killed that attempt did not have enough gas to get to the next area who had power . Bring proper gear for cold and hot. just in case. I do pack my own food that gives me energy, sugar will zap your endurance.
    I learn something on every motorcycle trip / adventure i do. so just keep trying, never give up great job again.

    You have inspired me to want to do this as well. I think I would do it during June here, super long days. And for me to hit 1000 miles I will have to cross the mountains at least twice, so I want to make sure there is no snow up at altitude. I would think a power plug would be really helpful. I bought a charger / holder for my phone, but I haven’t installed it yet. You were fantastically organized, and I think that is part that attracts me as well. 48 states in 10 days??? WOW, you go! Congratulations on your Saddle Sore 1000! Doing it solo & on a Sportster 883 with a peanut gas tank is a real accomplishment! As you mentioned, it's so important to be organized for any long distance endurance ride. My son & I just completed our Saddle Sore 1000 on October 11th. We both have bikes with larger gas tanks (mine a Kawasaki Versys 1000LT, his a Harley Dyna Super Glide Custom) then your 883, so we didn't need to make as many gas stops (generally every 140-180 miles.) We completed the ride in a little over 19 hours leaving San Diego, California at 4:00 am and arriving at my home in Simi Valley at 11:20 pm. I agree with you that leaving early in the morning is probably a good strategy to maximize daylight riding. I've noticed that many Saddle Sore 1000 & Bun Burner 1500 participants leave as early as midnight to 2:00 am. I have a question for you: I sent all our paperwork online a few days latter to the IBA and have still not heard from them. I know you did yours during the summer & just received your certificate a few days ago. I'm assuming that due to Covid, many more people are attempting endurance rides and it could be several months before confirmation is received. I don't want to "bug" IBA about where our paperwork is in the system. Your thoughts?

Solo is the way to go! 4.) I’ve called ahead to my late night stops to confirm that the pumps are operable even if the station is closed. 5.) I agree, run-what-you-brung! 6.) A Bun Burner is quite a bit harder. 7.) You wish you’d have done it sooner. Ha! I did my first SS1K at 60, and a BBS at 61! 8.) I’m planning a 48/10 for 2021, too. I’ve just stumbled upon your awesome channel! Kudos for riding the ‘03 883 Custom on a SS!
    My wife, Suzanne, started riding in 1993 on an 883 Hugger. This machine also has the short travel suspension like the 883C. Suzanne rode her 883 Hugger until she bought her first Heritage Classic in 2000.
    Over the years Suzanne and I have done numerous 1,000+ mile days together. Suzanne’s first long day was a 960 mile ride from Sacramento to Grand Junction, on her ‘02 Heritage Softail.
    Your advice about starting early in the day is spot-on. 5am is the latest that I will leave on a ride this long. Our breaks are kept short at first so that we can stretch them out later in the ride. I use Garmin Base Camp to plan rides like this, as you do, down to specific gas and food stop locations.
    Suzanne is short, with a modest inseam. Suzanne will tell you that even though the Heritage is a heavier bike, it is much easier to ride than her Sportster because the center of gravity is so low.
    Suzanne bought her second Heritage Classic in ‘02 and rode it for 105,000 miles. In 2016 she picked up her third Heritage, with a 110 stage kit. She has roughly 20,000 on her 2016.
    I’ve ridden all of H-D’s touring models and currently ride a ‘17 Road Glide Special. My experience is that the ride quality of the counterbalanced Heritage Softail is measurably better than any of the touring platform machines that H-D currently offers. I see that you rented a Heritage in Vegas. Have you had a chance to compare the ride quality of the two platforms?

    Great video and congrats on the certification. It's. a great feeling to get the certification and stickers and all that stuff. I also did mine early this year. As per your tips I would add, 1. plan for a longer break mid-way. I took all my gas breaks (fueling, bathroom, cigarette, hydrating, collecting receipts etc.) in 15 to 20 minutes but took a longer -50 or so minutes- lunch break mid ride for a real sit-down meal. That sort of gave me a second wind and a break in routine. 2. Depending on where you ride (I did MN-WI-ND-SD-MN) plan a route that gives you a mix of highway/Interstate and smaller roads (with interstates towards the end of the trip). It provides some added variety and allows you to open the throttle on some of the stretches while keeping a good pace on the smaller roads. 3. And finally plan for wild life. I planned my trip so that I didn't have to ride on smaller roads -more prone to wild life- at dusk or dawn. And I am like you, I enjoyed doing it solo and really enjoyed the long distance riding. Plus the saddle sore gives you a renewed confidence in your abilities. A few months later I rode the 600 miles from Minneapolis to the Devil's tower in WY in less than a day and the ride felt like a breeze (almost). Again, thanks for posting. I love following your channel.

We had some weather on our way but we were all skilled riders to muscle through and stopped for 30 min for lunch, half way through. Time is critical doing a timed route, our stops were no longer than 10 min. We packed snacks. Earplugs and highway are highly recommended

I have done some long distances and all your advise is good, i would just add taking more shorter breaks. i usually get off the bike every hour, just for a quick walk around and a smoke. and then every two hours/second break is when i do the fuel stops. this helps a lot and as you mentioned in the comments moving your feet around also helps a lot to relieve strain especially on the knees and hips. I also never eat a big meal because that just knocks you out, or for me at least so healthy snacks throughout the day and a LOT of water because you dehydrate very quickly on the bike. And kudos on your planning, as they say on the IBA "Plan your ride and ride your plan."

    Great video, your lessons learned are spot on, recognize all of them. I started in 2018 and now have 15 rides done, including 5 Bun Burners (3 Gold, 2 Silver). I'd strongly recommend to do one or more BB's before the 48/10 challenge. Especially the BB Gold (1500 miles in 24 hours) is a tough one! If you can do that one, you are up for the 48/10 I'd say.

    CONGRATULATIONS and welcome! My IBA number is just under 50000. I rode a 1972 BMW R75/5 in 2014. My 6 gallon tank easily did 200 miles. I packed at my meals and ate while I looked over the bike. I did have efficient stops. Just about 17 hours total for me. Madison around the lake, then down to Racine, making square corners to get over 1000.

    One of the things that worry me about a saddle sore 1K is the actually soreness on the saddle (no pun intended) were you struggling with hotspots or saddle burn (is that the name?) at any point or did the multiple stops kinda help you prevent running into those issues?

      Actually I did not for the entire ride, it wasn’t until that “third” day where I started to cramp up in my butt. I had a super comfy seat that was given to me when I purchased the bike. I didn’t need any extra padding. I think moving my feet to different spots on the bike (loved those passenger pegs) helped tremendously!

    * The one top tip I have for anyone doing an Ironbutt is to start *MEGA* early. If you start much earlier, say 2am, and you stop at 10am for breakfast, you've already got 10 hours of riding in, and you still have pretty much a whole days daylight to ride in. Also, you're going to be "fresher" in that early morning night riding, and reduce the amount of night riding you're doing later in the ride when you're tired. Think about your encounters with deer, etc. Better when you're more alert.
    * Ear plugs.
    * Cruise control.
    * Advil. Take before you're sore.
    * Have wet weather gear/ spare gloves, extra ear plus extra sunglasses, etc. Get that wet weather gear on at the previous stop so you don't have to make an extra stop when you ride.

It's called the Oregon 500 never the same route but it takes usually about 10-12 hours and just about kills my butt so I am not sure I could do 1000. Getting too old for the punishment. I do have a newer Triumph Bobber so we will see how the seat is on that and maybe try it if that is a good seat. It's mostly the butt thing everything else is OK. I try to do two or three major 2K to 3K trips per year. My motivation is always to try restaurants along the way and document the death out of each one. However, there comes a point when I decide I'm done. When that happens, I blast home at whatever distance from home I'm at. There have been two or three times when I've almost completed the distance without the paperwork.
    My loop around lake Michigan, last summer, was full of storms and ridiculousness so was not very conducive to feeling good about the big miles. Hoping to do two major West coast rides this next year. I feel like I could easily put out the miles to get from where I am in Indiana to my buddy's house by Denver, which is about 1250 miles. My struggle with that is, I want to do an additional 3000 miles and then back to his house before coming back to my house in northern Indiana. Perhaps, like a nerd out a little, like you referred to, and get that certification on the way.

There is a lot of wisdom out there if you search for it on the 48 in 10. My advice is to practice doing 500 in 8 hours. It's something you can do on any Saturday and Sunday, doesn't require time off or anything special, but it's Bun Burner Gold pace. If you can do BBG pace without sweating it, you can do anything the Iron Butt Association can throw at you. Steve IBA#515.
