A look at the new uniforms made for Star Trek Generations that were ultimately ditched in favor of the TNG & DS9 uniforms. Do people even read CZcams video descriptions? I don't.

Yes, sadly the series never addressed Worf’s addiction to plastic surgery.
One thing that always bothered me about Worf: where are his damn ears? Does he even have ears?

@Dangerosu OMGosh! I never noticed!! Gotta check it out now on Netflix!
People should stop making fun of Worf's addiction to cosmetic surgery.

the zipper in the back for the next gen second uniform always bugged me. How would that be practical. Imagine getting up and having wear that everyday. Number one, be a dear and zip me up.
Gene Roddenberry is adamant that zippers don't exist in the 24th century. Any closure that looks like a zipper and even operates exactly like a zipper (like Beverly's in The Naked Now) is clearly some kind of future tech we don't understand.
And going to the rest room...or people don't do that in the future. There's a zero waste policy.
@@scockery Precision teleporters... And where do you think the replicators get the matter-energy for the next meal?
@@RealLuckless well in Enterprise its revealed that human waste was used for anything.
"Number one, be a dear and zip me up." I read that in Picard's voice.
Sr. Patrick Stewart talked about the uniforms in a recent interview for Picard. He talked about the singlet uniforms being so tight that they hurt the actors backs. This was a major concern for the studio. Presumably because they were worried about guild law suits. They changed the uniforms to the 2 part ones to address this.
These look much better on paper than when materialised. Which is kind of fitting that they are being adapted into the New Lower Decks animated show
The upside is they really nailed the First Contact uniforms, and they worked well on DS9. The 'mess dress' versions seen in insurrection were also very well done.
Yeah, since the VOY crew wore the early DS9 uniforms throughout due to being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, I was rather glad when the DS9 crew changed to the FC uniforms. Sometimes when watching certain DS9 scenes after VOY premiered and before the uniform change, I'd forget for a moment which show I was watching😄
I learned about the unused Generations uniforms a couple years ago. My favorite are the gray/heather late DS9 and TNG film era uniforms used in First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis. Less colorful and more "uniform" uniforms are more military looking.
Those and the TNG uniforms used later in the show were the franchise's best uniforms. Special mention to the TOS movie uniforms (with the exception of the first film) for being the closest the franchise has ever gotten to what a real life navy uniform might look like.
@@angryretailbanker5103 Agreed. I love the Wrath of Khan movie era uniforms. What do you think of Discovery's new Season 4 uniforms?
@@undeadknight01 I’ve never actually seen Discovery. I’ve seen clips of it and just didn’t like what I saw. So I don’t know how these uniforms look.
Dunno... may be more uniform, but I like the colors used in most variants - reminds me of the colors used in flight deck jerseys (aka, Skittles).
@@kennethmiller2333 The First Contact uniforms are my favorite. They struck a great balance between the traditional Star Trek tri-color scheme and a uniform look. Enterprise did that well too.
I remember reading somewhere many years ago that one of the reasons why they got rid of the jumpsuit uniform from season 1-2 was that Patrick Stewart was having lower-back issues from wearing the jumpsuit.
From everything I heard none of the actors liked them and they were also high maintenance for the costume department.
Different explanations and reasons were given to (and have been repeated by) different sources.
But the offensive smell is something they almost all agree on.
Remember that this is the show which had cat poop on the bridge set carpets - that nobody dealt with for a couple _years_ - so I'm sure those clammy clingy polyester uniforms were carefully cleaned/disinfected after every use and I'm sure they were always carefully stored in separate sealed containers.
I always wondered why the Data action figure I got as a kid had uniform I never saw him wear... The more you know.
This is exactly the sort of ultra-nerd content I love this channel for
3:30 about Worf's nose changing, someone stole the cranial ridges prop so they made a completely new design.
that's hilarious. Had they already scrapped the mould?
Whoever stole that first prop did us all a favor then. I always thought that the original cranial ridge prop looked like a bad cosplay design for a Fallout 3 super mutant. The later version was magnitudes better.
I need more junkball obscura !!! maybe a video on how the transporter room changed over time.

No no, the winner of the Outstanding Star Trek Bit Part Actor in Generations is that one guy on the bridge who does a fist pump after watching the Star Trek VI Bird of Prey stock footage.
No. It's Lt Junior Jae. Best recurring bit player in TNG.
It's definitely Engineer Russell of TNG
Idk guys, that one helmsman who dies at the Conn in tng season 2 to that vacuum entity gave, I think, oscar worthy acting
Different movie, but bit part actor award should be the helms woman who gave Riker the “f*ck me now” look in Insurrection.
Season 3 with the collars will always be my favorite uniform.
The red TOS movie uniforms were still the best-looking uniform they ever had. They were just classy, and always a pleasure to look at.
If they used that uniform, but with the collor scheme of TNG, I would be perfect.
@Felipe Risseto I highly doubt that you will be perfect. Just a feeling I have.
I quite enjoyed the dress uniforms from the TNG movies
Yeah, though I only liked the red TOS movie uniforms when they didn't have them open. Like how Kirk had his open when Spock died in Wrath of Khan. Which is why I always felt Spock stood out the best in that uniform as he never once had his open (not counting behind the scenes footage or photos that is lol)
I would give them black or white tops with the undershirt matching their division color.
Oustanding work Michael Mack. I was seriously concerned about that Bird of Prey.
Michael Mack also voiced all the male Redguards in Elder Scrolls III and IV! Sadly he didn’t return for Skyrim.
What?!
I never noticed Worf's nose changing because I was distracted by his turtle (you know what I mean) changing so drastically - and no-one ever said anything. At least Crusher should have noticed; "Worf! What the hell happened to your head?"
I think one reason why they went with the DS9 uniforms was to keep up with continuity. Voyager premiered during season 3 of DS9 and also had the same uniforms, so it wouldn't make sense for the Enterprise crew to suddenly have a different uniform from the rest of Starfleet. Also, from a production standpoint, having a few DS9 uniforms probably saved on costume budget, but from an in-universe perspective it showed that Starfleet was still in the process of making the switch-over when the Nexus event occurred, and senior officers clearly had priority when it came to getting the new design, which I think is pretty realistic.
Why did they feel the need to change uniforms at all? The later season uniforms looked great to me, I actually prefer them to the DS9 uniforms.
The DS9 uniforms looked better on people, IMO. The season 3+ TNG uniform looked fine on paper but less good on actors.
Honestly, I really liked Picards jacket uniform. Kind if wish that was more standard.
for merch.... people need mo monnies!
I suspect the producers wanted each show/movie to have its own distinctive look...the uniforms are one part of that.
Gen 2 TNG uniforms were best, followed by Gen2 DS9 unis, IMO.
The cynic in me says it must be for toy and merch sales. I get wanting each show or the film series to have a distinct look but in-universe it’s ridiculous how often Starfleet changes uniforms.
@@CharlesP2009 Agreed, definitely for merch. Personally, I think the DS9 uniforms should've been distinct on their own, since they were on a space station... most of the time anyway.
Nothing beats the Wrath of Khan uniforms from ST:II to VI. End Transmission.
bricenm o oh
I would pay good money for one of the away team coats from WoK.
Those things looked awesome
The starfleet uniforms for Picard are really similar to these, Admiral Clancy's uniform for example with the rank pips in the trapezoid on the chest.
As sad as I was to see the First Contact (my favorite design) uniforms go, the Picard ones look pretty good IMHO.
Something about Geordi's uniform always bugged me, but my young self couldn't place why. Then I completely forgot about it. Then you show the exact scene. Now I remember that it bugged me, and now I know why. Nice one.
Frake's uniform also fits him really badly. Brooks and him obviously have different shapes across the torso as it looks way to big on Frakes even though he is the taller one.
It's like they put Georgi in the wash and he shrank.
Levar Burton was wearing Colm Meaney's uniform from DS9, and Burton was a bit thinner than Meaney. Plus I think Meaney is just barely taller, so the uniform didn't fit well. Patric Stewart was the only one of the male cast members that didn't wear someones elses uniform, plus his was a two part uniform, instead of the jumpsuit everyone else wore.
@@My-Name-Isnt-Important Colm Meaney is four inches taller than Levar Burton -- 5'11" to 5'7", as noted by the video -- more than "just barely", I'd say. It's astonishing that the costume department didn't notice the over-long cuffs and hem them -- maybe the fabric (wool gabardine) was too stiff to roll up into the sleeve? I suppose we'll have to posit that the ship's uniform-replication software was glitching that day.
@@phillipthorne8363 They were borrowing the uniforms from DS9. So after filming ended they had to go back. I guess Paramount saw it as an easy fix, just use existing uniforms, even if they didn't fit properly.
07:48: "short horizontal seams". They're called "darts."

Cannabis works pretty good as well.
Those uniforms are hideous looking. Thank god they switched.
Yeah! They look like kids pajamas.
@@bojankotur4613 The only ones that didn't look like awkward pajamas were the red TOS movie ones. Everything uniform is pajamas, from TOS to ENT. TNG even makes a joke about it in Time's Arrow. I thought ENT's formal-pajamas were the worst; buuut, seeing these make them second worst. ENT's regular ones somewhat made sense being engineer's overalls but adding a freaking formal suit collar and tie?
I remember some Klingons ragging on Star Fleet uniforms - yelling, "take off that Child's Uniform!!!!" Don't recall the episode - but it was funny. But still better than colored T-Shirts and black pants.
Yeah, they switch to another worthless timeline unrelated to canon.
@@impishrebel5969 Those red uniforms looked AMAZING. By far the best uniform they ever had. They were simply classy.
I like it when you say stuff about Star Trek. Looking forward to your next video when you say more stuff about Star Trek.
Star Trek is certain full of stuff.
I feel it is at its best when having stuff in it
I noticed Picard did his maneuver of pulling down the top part of his uniform when standing up from a seated position for both his one and two piece versions of the uniforms in the TNG series run.
The Enterprise-D was radically changed in Generations.
- Redesigned sets
- Stellar cartography
- Night lighting
- Upgraded computer sounds
- New combadge
- Different uniforms
- Loads of extras
- Data's emotion chip
- Even the ship looked more detailed in flybys
It made no sense. No revamp would be that drastic within such a short space of time. Also, those black Starfleet uniforms were meant for deep space assignments (I thought), hence the DS9 crew had been using them years before they were introduced to the Federation flagship. The DS9 crew also reverted back to the TNG uniform whenever they visited Earth and in the episode Visitor, Captain Nog was wearing a TNG uniform, something like 20 years into the future.
The women still had jumpsuits because they couldn't get the 2 piece right for them. Thy figured it out later for voyager. There is an interview with blackman where he talks about it.
My favorite Junkball videos are the obscure facts ones. It's like watching a video version of the notes and apocrypha section on Memory Alpha.

Don't dare me... but thanks.
@@JunkBallMedia Oh I do Sir! I dare you to make a boring video!
@King Peppy exactly!
We need a dedicated video about the nose!
Say what you will because of its many, many, flaws, Generations was beautifully filmed and still serves to be one of the finest examples of Star Trek eye candy.
Yeah in spite of it's many flaws, I still like it.
The movies themes are also well done. Plus, it's the only movie with the D. And the only one with Kirk and Picard. I mean, damn! What's not to love about it?
Its bits of decent eye candy do not make up for its shitty overall writing, logic and everything else.
The main flaws are to do with the Nexus - how does Picard get out of the Nexus, and why doesn't he go back earlier in time? Also, the death of Kirk is a bit unsatisfactory (though better than the original version they shot). I think they could have fixed the movie by having Spock in the Guinan part, and in the Nexus with Kirk.
I'll add that, yeah, the Enterprise interiors look beautiful, but some people hate that it's not bland and overlit like on the TV show.
I really like that design, but as a cosplayer, fabric selection is key. Although it looked like fleece at first look (like pajamas) which would actually work well since it has a bit of stretch and is slightly more resistant to water. That being said, new innovations in fabric are happening all the time and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the better materials just weren't around then.
I just want an 7 hour video of Junkball, Rich Evans and Mike Stoklasa talking about Star Trek
While watching the Voyager season 7 finale I found that they used very similar clothes in the future scenes as the abandoned uniforms
the Mind Blowing Belt Cutaway alone deserves the sub
I’m a simple man. I see an esoteric Junkball Star Trek video, I click.
and press the like button of course
The design of the Generations uniform was very good. Like you theorise, if they'd had an entire season to play around with it, I'm sure it could have worked
That’s why the changes the uniforms during season 3! I liked the look with the darts down the chests however I see what you mean on the puckering when they sat down.
Nicely done! I always wondered about these uniforms. I still have a Data and Picard figures in their original packaging in these uniforms!
4:42 There still could have been a Picard maneuver in that case, instead he'd be pulling his pants up.
Junk on fire! The next video, i'm so in love!
7:51 those are darts in the armpits, and one of the first weird things I noticed when re-watching recently.
And overall this is really interesting - I had assumed, from the random mixing of TNG and DS9 designs in the film, that the costume budget had been tiny and stretched until it broke. To now find out that there was supposed to be a whole new set of costumes - and, moreover, costumes that you could give to the principle cast while leaving the extras in the old ones without it really showing - that never got off the ground makes so much more sense.
Nothing explains why Picard went back to his old uniform for the last scene on the crashed bridge, though. It's like they were trying to point out the discrepancy.
And were they filming concurrently with DS9? Why couldn't they temporarily tack Meany's sleeves up a couple of inches for Burton?
Ow. Darts in the armpits sounds hella painful.
@@CrazyBear65 hilarious.
Love your material and your oddball sense of humour. Keep it up!
The S1 uniforms actually looked really good, but it was obvious why they changed them. Every time anyone went to sit down you'd always watch them pull the waist to stop it riding up. Picard and Riker did it in unison almost every episode...
The designs are all right. But the collars look so off, but It’s really cool to see what might have been.
Do more awards for bit part actors, please. That was so great.
My pleasure. I love your breakdown videos. Listening to your production method is fascinating.
Good to see more content from you! That uniform Riker had on looked like he was wearing a sack the entire movie
Apparently Patric was suffering from back issues caused by the jump suits in series 1 and 2 - he demanded a 2 part outfit

First, I absolutely love your work. Your videos are some of the most entertaining, informative on the CZcamss! Next - a technicality... Worf DID wear a DS9-style uniform in Generations...in a deleted scene! Remember toward the end, when we see a shuttle about to land to pick Picard up? Well, in a filmed deleted scene, Geordi and Worf actually disembark the shuttle to talk to the captain before picking him up...and yup...Worf was in the alternate uniform!!! Wild, isn't it?! Keep up the GREAT content!!!
Admittedly, I always wanted to see the TNG cast in the red, double-breasted uniforms that Kirk & Co. wore in their films. I think those will always be my favorite outfits.
They were the first ones I ever remember seeing but to me they look a bit stuffy and not that futuristic; they must be wearing at least 3 layers!
Love it - keep up the great work!

I guess in the future of 'All Good Things' there must've been some latitude in uniforms ( for flag officers, at least) as Riker was wearing what would be, by then, a very dated uniform. Or was it one of Q's little digs, as he created that future and maybe wanted to make Riker look like an old relic?
This is one the best videos you've done for a while. Keep up the good work!

I love Star Trek so much and Starfleet changing uniforms even more.
I had this experience that made me feel like I was some sort off Star Trek show. When I visited my home country back in August after 6 years of being away I was surprised to see 6 different uniforms in the public education system of my country. 2 years prior to my visit the government established 5 different uniforms that were going to be used in the different regions of my country but the government failed to educate the children in which one was the correct one according to the region the lived that’s why they ended up with a classroom of people wearing red polo-shirts, blue polo-shirts, green, purple, yellow and the prior blue button shirt that was used before. All the 5 uniforms consists of a white collar and short sleeves while the prior one was like a normal short-sleeve button shirt but all blue.

Always wondered about this. Thanks.
I was so glad they ditched the caped crusader looking uniforms of the first two years. The third year, only the cast & guest stars had the new look, then they took off with it the next year. The early ones had that line under the collar and the pips nearby, creating the look of Batman from the sides.
This fixed my headache. Thank you!
Wish they'd use them for Picard.
This was done so well you can take a small detail and make it very interesting.
I usually front load videos with backstory to set up why the topic is worth exploring. Context is king. Thanks for noticing. Glad ya liked it.

@@JunkBallMedia I'd watch that Junkball Video over and over again! More than I already do!
I always liked the gray one they used in Star Trek First Contact and the uniform in Star Trek Enterprise with the NX-01. The blue one in Enterprise just made more sense. It was practical. I felt the other uniforms where way too flimsy. When going on an away mission most of the uniforms where ridiculous. If they got in a scrape or had to do something strenuous which would easily happen on an away mission the uniforms would shred.
Michael Mack also played a Romulan on TNG "The Pegasus".
