"Things you unwrap" or "Things with WRAPPING paper" would have clearly been accepted in the 80's version. As long as you say the key word they give it to you.

even though he said unwrap I would still give it to him because he said unwrap and the subject was things you wrap

I remember when The $10, 000 Pyramid began, the judges were very, very strict about both the clues and the answers when in the winner's circle. The contestant basically had to say exactly what the card on the board said or he/she was not given credit for it. There wasn't any "essence of the answer" thing. And there were many times that the audience booed. I mean, how many ways and how many times do you have to say "things with wrapping paper on them" or "things you unwrap" before you get credit for "things you wrap"?

Most excited I have ever seen Dick Clark while climbing the pyramid. Love the "computer graphics" at the end.

David Jackino Yeah, that was cool to see that. I wish more of these 70's era pyramid episodes both Clark & Cullen versions would appear.

He won the $10,000 the first time. He said things with wrapping paper that should have been enough because he said the subject. Good for him getting it on the 2nd subject for $10,000 in 12 seconds. He showed them. LOL.

rodney1279 they should have. Even the camera man was getting confused.

@@LittleRockElevators When Preston himself posted online his account of what happened, he was briefed by the contestant coordinator before the show that he had to give an exact answer on the top category, which may have explained all the chaos when it was put into practice.
Good thing Preston won on the do-over, but had he lost, who knows how much heat Bob Stewart and CBS would have gotten from the viewers?

The reset pretty much killed the eventual celebration, but they did the right thing. I could swear I saw a 80's episode on GSN where they did the same thing. As an aside, I liked how the chase lights moved twice as fast on a $10K win.

I remember that episode as well. I think this has been done several times in Pyramid's history.

I LOVED this original version of the Pyramid with the fast-racing lights, the close-set trilons, and that awesome-eerie black-bronze reflective surface on the face of the pyramid. Would love to have seen it in person ☹️

At lest they gave him a new category and a 12 seconds on the timer and still won.

Well tbh the player did give the answer and the judge didn’t award him so I don’t blame them for doing that

Dick Clark says that the JUDGE IS HERE...Well I hope the judge was there to officiate this Winner's Circle. Then they changed the too category to THINGS AT A PARTY...? Now come on. But Preston was going to win anyway as he did answer his original top subject correctly in the first place.

nonsense, and perhaps the first time
There was no need to check the tape.
Anyone with one functioning ear would hear "wrapping" and "unwrap"
If an earlier comment is true - that the exact form of the key word was needed, then the contestant failed to win - PERIOD. DC doesn't mention before this or after the break.
There was another do-over with Heidi Bohay and a male contestant who said "exchange" but not "change" until a # of seconds had gone by. DC recognized that an error had been made - a word that contained the key word should be accepted.. The time was restored, allowing the contestant to complete the pyramid on a different box,

I agree. Since when does the word 'unwrap' mean the same as 'wrap'? In my opinion, he lost. No need to play a substitute category.

Growing pains. I am pretty sure they worked out the kinks on all later incarnations of Pyramid. Especially from 1982 onward.

I remember one episode of the 20,000 pyramid in 1979 where the category was famous losers and the celebrity said a sad vegas vistor and the contestant said loser and they played the theme and dick they couldn't take it because its said famous losers, but there was still 32 seconds left but pyramid didn't give a second chance

  • @cornwalldragon4617

Too bad that Dick Clark didn't explain why, but a game show like this must have a lot of factors to consider when something doesn't go right which is to review the tapes. I imagine that they must have two or three tapes recording.

  • @JayTemple
    @JayTemple Před 7 lety +3

One thing they did right on this episode that they did wrong for most of the 1980's is to go back to when the category appeared instead of when an error in judgment occurred.

Even after the guy got the "do over" and the music started playing and the lights were flashing, he was still looking around for confirmation that he won. I think he said "Did I get it?", and he turned around and looked at the board and he was looking for Dick Clark and probably the judge, too. Does "things at a party" match "things at a party"? Only the judge knows for sure.

    Dale Pidcoe DuBoistown,PA.
I want to see one of the poster-size billboards in Lycoming County,PA from 1977 with the scrambled advertisement for the Dodge Charger Automobile and make the picture of that billboard ad 3 times larger than the normal size so I can see the pieces of the car upside down when put in the wrong places.
