    What an amazing race! I'm a Touhy fan, and I know she ran with a lot of heart. I know that she will snap back from this. I wish I could have seen here in the 5K as well. The fact that she qualified for the finals in both is amazing. After pushing so hard all year, she had a great season. Congrats to Maia. That was a very technical performance and a well earned win.

      I can’t imagine Tuohy ran this way on advice from her coach. A windy day with a headwind on the back straight, it was dumb to lead. Her frustration in the pedestrian semis led to a poor approach to the final IMHO. She bailed on the longer race (5000) later in the meet, won by Valby, so maybe there’s other stuff at play. I think she needs to chill, ignore the social media and the fanboys/girls, and concentrate on winning races the smart way. The records will come if they are meant to.
      I liked Ramsden’s observation about ‘not bouncing around so much’, her style certainly looked quite economical (like Tuohy’s always is). No wasted effort. Good win, but jeez she’s sounding nothing like a Kiwi these days….

    Good for Maia. She is said to be a very nice person. KT didn't look right on Thursday after an incredibly slow 4:14. Here she looked exhausted after running 4:11 and completely running out of gas with 100 to go. Henes reportedly said Tuohy felt 'awful' after the race so she decided to scratch her, which was the smart thing to do. Let's just hope she doesn't have something that will sideline her for long.

    As I see it, after Tuohy saw O'Sullivan scamper away in the semi, she decided that setting a fast early pace would take away the tall woman's legs. O'Sullivan may also have been tired from winning the semi, but in either case, running so fast so early also took away Tuohy's legs at the end, and didn't slow down the half dozen women that passed her in the last few hundred meters. Even with perfect tactics, Tuohy would have had difficulty beating *all* these experienced 1500 runners. I suspect her legs were so dead after this effort, that she pulled out of the 5000 to prevent injury.

    This, being a Championship race, didn't have pacemakers. That meant that Kaitlyn, who needed a fast pace because she isn't particularly fast over 400/800, had to make a big decision. To lead and force the pace and allow others to get the benefits or sit back and try to finish fast. Leading in a 1500m, effectively acting as pacemaker for the rest of the field, is not the same as leading in a 5000m. Still, lesson learned, I hope.
    If she had sat back and let others set the pace, it would have come down to a tactical race and any former 400/800 runners would have buried her in the finish.

    • @johnwilson5743
      @johnwilson5743 Před rokem +5

      @@Bonobopantherienbionique Hi. You could very well be correct. However, KT's best 400/600 time is NOT fast and there were probably 8 or 9 FASTER runners (over 600) in that race. She needs a fast pace throughout, to allow her strength and stamina to play a role. I've closely watched KT over the years and seen her development. I'm a huge fan! Eventually her best distance on the track will be 10,000m which will allow her to build her strength and stamina and use them. (Cross-Country and Road running as well but we are just talking Track) I estimate it will take about 4 or 5 years, meaning she will hit her peak at about age 26 in time for the 2028 Olympic 10,000m.
      Note: The new World Record for women at 1500m is 3.49. That 64 sec lap KT ran would only result in a 4m flat time, if she kept it up all the way. KT will never be fast at 1500m at Open Grade level and , yes, KT is an Open Grade runner (20 and over) so it is not unfair to make comparisons to Open Grade world times. It's only when you limit the race to USA College level that the middle/long distance are seen clearly. Cheers.

Only a few days ago the world mark was reset at 14:05:02 by Faith Kipyegon in Paris. Please, don't yet me wrong, I wish KT every success, but those who have been around the sport have seen so many protégés over the years and heaping expectations on them too soon often leads to unfilled careers. И конечно ей надо много работать над финишной скоростью.

    Could be. Things seemed off kilter from the Wake Forest meet on. It seems clear that they paced that race based on her training times and consistent with what she ran in indoors in the mile and the DMRs, but she just did not have it. Then you have her own comments after the record at Soundrunning where she said she was having a really tough time in training. Then you have this podcast comment by a coach that Henes said that she has not been herself in training for several weeks. Still could have been just a bad meet or bad day or a poor race strategy, but my guess is that she got worn down by a long, eventful year. It is hard to run at a very high level all year, and I thought she started to wear down this time last year also.

    KT might be tired from all the pressure of breaking the 5k outdoor record. She might be training through this weekend with high mileage to peak at the World Championships. It’s hard to peak in indoors, and twice in outdoors. Distance runners aren’t machines. Sometimes you are tired one week. She is making steady improvement year by year, that’s all that matters. Katelyn’s 1500 PR is 4:06 which she ran in indoor so her first 300m should have been :49.2 if she wanted to match that but she ran :47.9 which is only 1.3 seconds too fast. Her 400 m laps should have been 65.6 seconds each to match her PR. Her 700 m split should have been 1:53.5 to get a PR, but she was 1:55.3 (2 seconds slow), so even though it looked like she was running crazy, she was running slower than her best time. However, considering she wanted to double, and it was about 95 degrees, and her PR was set using the vacuum effect of having a runner right in front of her in indoor, she should have gotten out behind the pack and ran close to the rail to not add extra distance, and let others break the wind and use the vacuum effect to let the air pull her behind them. It looked a little windy right before the race. Then she should have kicked the last 300 m to gradually work her way to the lead, to win by a small margin, less than a second.

If you look at the details it helps people understand and maybe she can learn from these details to make a more careful plan in the future.
