  • I bought a RED V-Raptor six months ago, then upgraded it to the new global-shutter X variant as soon as it was announced back in January. Here are my thoughts about why I bought it, how I like it, and whether I'd buy it again today. As always, these are just my personal opinions, ramblings, observations, and emotions. Enjoy!

    RED cameras seem to be great tools for filmmakers and they keep pushing the boundaries what can be done. Like with the global shutter tech they have. Would be great to get to test something like RED Komodo X which I think would be suitable for me at this time.

    The image cadence is nice on the RED products are nice. I know you hate nebulous words - but the footage seems creamy, aesthetically smooth. Jeolous of the Oconnor head. Great content

    Yeah that is a great investment. The red raptor x is smooth because of all the highlight roll off, shadow roll off and great rendering. lol. Just kidding

    The v raptor x is a dream of a camera. Global shutter is something i really like. I film bands often live and for music videos and strobes are always a problem and finally it is possible again. The komodo was cool and the f55, zcam and other global shutter cameras too but together with the high dynamic range of the v raptor i bet it is amazing to work with.

    I love the V-Raptor X content. I don't see any other content creators talking about it - mainly due to the exclusivity of ownership due to the higher-than-mirrorless price tag. But this is my dream camera, though I would have been happy with a KX until this came out. Now I'm obsessed 🙂

      Thank you for watching it! I’m extremely lucky to be able to shoot on this camera, and I don’t regret it for a moment. However the KX is amazing. If the KX is within your budget, and it would help you achieve your goals, don’t hesitate! I have thought about ditching my hybrid mirrorless cameras and swapping for a KX at some point. Ultimately, all you really lose is about one stop of depth of field at the fastest end. But there are lenses that get pretty close if that’s your objective, like the Zhong Yi Speedmaster or Sirui Nightwalker if shallow DOF is your thing (like it is for me)! About as shallow, at the cost of some sharpness/contrast/aberrations.

    You are dead on about the feel of RED.

  •  Před 2 měsíci +2

    Does the red v raptor x still have the ippl2 pipeline or is there something new? I loved about the ippl pipeline that they offered different "tonemappings" out of the box

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  Před 2 měsíci +4

      Yes it uses ipp2. I don’t use their stock LUTs or tonemappings though, I process color differently. You can see my process in a recent video called “Seven Ways to Color Grade.”

    How do you feel about working with this camera in regards to working with a small crew?

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  Před 2 měsíci

      Great question. As long as you have the integrated monitor it is extremely easy to work with, it makes it just like any other camera. I don’t believe I have ever once consulted a manual, or had a hard time finding some function that I needed to use. I have handed this camera to operators who had never seen it before, and they were able to pick it up and get it going with ease. Sometimes there are certain organizational things that I think could be easier. And there are things here and there that I would like to be different, like a faster startup time, or not having to restart to change to ProRes, etc. But for me, there was virtually no learning curve coming over from mirrorless cameras, and it seems like it was the same for the operators I’ve worked with.

    Are you planning on shooting with a full camera team or operating by yourself? In my experience the small size and light weight of the REDs is great for the later but can actually be a bit of a hindrance when your going to be building it out fully. I remember doing a shoot with a komodo on a ronin 2 and the camera was so light i had to attach random knuckles and fittings to get it to balance properly.
    Looking forward to seeing more about your film

      Thanks Max! In my half year with the camera I've done shoots of all kinds, both solo and with crew. I find that it's easy to fit into most situations. I even dragged it to NAB and used it for some b-roll on the showroom floor! My little Plastic Fantastic parts help for solo shooting - www.fzerocamera.com/plastic - and then when I need more gear it attaches easily. I've used it with wireless transmitters and focus rods, etc. No problem. If you need more complex power distribution, you can always add the power plate, etc. Or of course if you still aren't getting enough connectivity with the power plate, then there's the V-Raptor XL. But for my uses (solo shooter up to a crew of maybe 6-8 people), this camera is perfect. Thanks for watching, and for your question. I've got a video coming up showing off a little bit of our early footage from the film, stay tuned!

    What was the total cost of owning red v raptor x with all accessories n insurances?

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  Před 2 měsíci

      It depends on what you want to count as an accessory just for that camera specifically, vs universal accessories (like the tripod it’s sitting on). All the pricing is public however, you can calculate for yourself what you’d want depending on your situation.

      There are a number of Raptor shots on the various videos of this channel, but no “reel” as such to show off. Maybe I will put one together at some point.

      @@nick_salazar ok just was curious as I thought to remember you said buying this camera for an independent movie. buying a camera for a production is not really the standard way to distribute budget, so I assumed movie budget had to be high indie level and you had a bunch of films and stuff under you belt already. was excited to see some of that. just to see what kinda level you are at when buying a $30k camera

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  Před 2 měsíci

      That makes sense. I’m an owner/operator, but not the usual kind of renting out equipment or working on other peoples’ sets. I’m an entrepreneur and I use cameras creatively in a lot of my work. A good chunk of it is for other businesses I run or assist that aren’t really related to filmmaking in general. I’ve never shot a feature film, this is me chasing that goal.

    Ok but what about the file sizes

    • @nick_salazar
      @nick_salazar  Před 2 měsíci

      That definitely falls under the “workflow” category. R3D RAW in MQ or LQ is manageable for most shooting that I do. But if you need smaller files, the camera also shoots several flavors of ProRes. It’s a truly versatile beast.
