Upper-crust executive Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) and down-and-out hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) are the subjects of a bet by successful brokers Mortimer (Don Ameche) and Randolph Duke (Ralph Bellamy). An employee of the Dukes, Winthorpe is framed by the brothers for a crime he didn't commit, with the siblings then installing the street-smart Valentine in his position. When Winthorpe and Valentine uncover the scheme, they set out to turn the tables on the Dukes.

Don Amache (who was Mortimer Duke) after each take where he says the N word to Eddie Murphy in the climax of the film would apologize profusely so Murphy pulled him aside and had it so both of them said the word repeatedly.
The man who plays the butler is Denholm Elliot who people will know better as Marcus Brody in The Indiana Jones films.
The cop that puts the white powder in his mouth is Muppeteer and director Frank Oz who cameoed in two previous John Landis films as the Warden in The Blues Brothers and one of the doctors in An American Werewolf in London,
In 2010, nearly 30 years after its release, the film was cited in the testimony of Commodity Futures Trading Commission chief Gary Gensler regarding new regulations on the financial markets. He said:
We have recommended banning using misappropriated government information to trade in the commodity markets. In the movie Trading Places, starring Eddie Murphy, the Duke brothers intended to profit from trades in frozen concentrated orange juice futures contracts using an illicitly obtained and not yet public Department of Agriculture orange crop report. Characters played by Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd intercept the misappropriated report and trade on it to profit and ruin the Duke brothers.
The testimony was part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act designed to prevent insider trading on commodities markets, which had previously not been illegal. Section 746 of the reform act is referred to as the "Eddie Murphy rule
He also hated saying, “F*** him!!!”, but the director convinced him to do just one take. And it was a good one.
The cop who pulls the drugs out of Louis' jacket when he's getting booked at the Police Station is Frank Oz. Frank Oz is the voice actor of Yoda, Grover, Bert, the Cookie Monster, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, and a few other childhood characters.
Speaking of trading places...eddie murphy did an snl sketch where he went in white face around town.
I only now realized that Giancarlo Esposito is the prisoner @ 8:16 . He's so young!!!!
This movie is amazingly hilarious! Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy work so well together!
This is such a well written comedy with a very clever concept that you won't see much today. Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis, literally the funniest perfect cast. Eddie and Dan were both from SNL (a time when SNL created legit stars) and the hilarious train scene took advantage of that. After this Eddie did Beverly Hills Cop and the rest was history, he literally was the biggest comedy star in the world at the time.
@ 28:22....not really ... Robert Downey Jr. was in blackface for 2008 movie, "Tropic Thunder"
"What if I can't do this job, Coleman? What if I'm not what they expected?"
"Just be yourself, sir. Whatever happens, they can't take that away from you."
Let me explain a little what happened on the exchange for anyone who is confused by the ending. Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy "sell" commodity shares while the price is high, before they owned any shares. They then had to "buy" the same amount of shares that they sold earlier when the price fell. It is called "short-sell" and it's perfectly legal, although there are rules governing how this happens. It is a risk because if the price of the commodity or stock goes up, you could lose a lot of money. We are seeing a Hollywood version of a "short-sell" event.
Fun Fact: Several funny moments in the film came about by accident. Mortimer Duke (Don Ameche) having trouble catching the money clip wasn't supposed to happen that way, but the actors kept going with it and not breaking character, so it was kept in the movie. Ophelia's "Swedish" disguise came about because Jamie Lee Curtis couldn't do the correct Austrian accent.
Historical Fact: In 2010, as part of the Wall Street Transparency And Accountability Act, which was to regulate financial markets, a rule was included which barred anyone from using secret inside information to corner markets, similar to what the Duke brothers tried to do in the movie. Since the movie inspired this rule, it has since become known as the Eddie Murphy Rule.
Trading Halted Fact: The World Trade Center's commodity exchange, Comex, was used for the trading scenes, and real traders performed alongside professional extras. As reported in studio production notes, the shoot at Comex was initially planned for a weekday, but the appearance of Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy on the set disrupted business activities, and six billion dollars of trading was halted. The shoot was rescheduled for a weekend.
This is basically what traders were trying to do with GameStop stocks before the gamers started buying and holding the shares a while back, isn't it?
Thank you for the explanation, btw. I understood generally what happened in the ending, but not how it all worked. Very interesting.
But the GameStop gamers turned the tables on the "short-sell"ing Wall Street brokers. This is why you SHOULDN'T telegraph your "short-sell" play or others will see it and ruin your day. Wall Street guys got overconfident and they're going to be super careful going forward.
Merry Christmas! (Luke 2 : 8-14 (KJV)) 🎄 🎅
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
Fun fact: the police officer at 12:18 is Frank Oz and the guy at 30:49 is Richard Hunt, Frank Oz and Richard Hunt worked for the muppets, rip Richard Hunt gone too soon
The police officer is GROVER and Yoda!

in Italy they have been broadcasting this film on the same channel for 20 years on December 24th on Christmas Eve. And every year I watch it 😅😂
The dukes were playing the poor guys in coming to America
I’m here for Ray Stantz and Donkey!
Great reaction, Timothee! My dad has been showing me these old 80s comedies and action movies almost as far back as I can remember, and I love so many of them.
I hope your holiday weekend is a safe and happy one! 🎄🎄🎅🎁🎄🎄
I love this movie so much. Don Ameche is a great actor. The scene where his brother is sick and he says F-him. Don wanted the studio cleared and only those needed were allowed to stay. He never liked using any fowl words. I think that Winthorp comes out on top at the end cause he’s with a woman who loves him for who he is (Penelope was doing something with Todd while with Louis. They were too close), two friends that are actually his friends and not because of his status. Billy Ray got a chance to use his brain and was able to benefit from it. It’s sad there are lots of smart people that financially and due to the people around them can’t use their smarts that would get them ahead in life. Insider trading wasn’t a big deal back then like it is now. This movie kinda brought attention to it. In 2010 they passed a law with a section being referred to as the Eddie Murphy law. I loved their plan on the train. Everyone dressed up to try and throw Beeks off. The only thing is they shouldn’t have acted like their were their costume cause it was New Year’s Eve and everyone was in costumes so they could’ve just been a group of people dressed up for New Year’s Eve party. I do think it’s funny that people have trouble with actors doing black face but don’t say anything about the Wayans brothers in white chicks. To me it’s all or none. The blackface that Dan Ackroyd did in this one is different from the main blackface issue. The main issue was back in the day instead of hiring a person of color(this incorporates Asian, African American and other races as it pertains to all that weren’t white back in the day) they would just paint someone’s face and have them do the accent.
Who would of thought that a movie about stocks and trading can be a really funny, well written comedy! All the actors are great here and it is funnier when you know the context of the two homeless guys in Coming to America. Makes you wish the Eddie Murphy in that movie wasn't so generous to them haha! Though some moments here do make it a product of that time, it still holds up really well.
Obviously certain aspects of the film haven’t aged well but it’s one of the best comedies to come out of the 80’s. A lot of people that react to it seem to not be a fan of the pacing but I think it’s one of the best things about the film.
28:18 exactly the reaction I was expecting to the blackface scene but not to worry everyone thinks it’s funny Eddie was fine with it because if he wasn’t he wouldn’t have done the scene plus he did an snl skit in whiteface so it’s ok
Ps: from what I’ve read the trading scene at the end most of the extras were actual stockbrokers
Also to be fair in that entire scene everyone minus Beaks was technically playing a culturally insensitive stereotype. Plus this is an R rated comedy, they usually have offensive comedy even today with stuff like South Park and Family Guy
@@johnmartin4119 but today it feels like they’re doing it just for the sake of doing it ya know being edgy. With this there was no malice behind it like you said a stereotype and sometimes stereotypes can be true or not true but does stereotypes really equal racism?
@@mohammedashian8094 I didn’t say stereotypes or offensive humor equals racism. I highly doubt any of these jokes were done with malicious intent, just for people to laugh at the obviously unrealistic over the top stereotypes. If this was done with malicious motives that would be a whole different issue
@@johnmartin4119 oh sorry my bad
The Blackface is taking the piss out of people doing blackface, you can even see the line around Dan's neck where the makeup ends.
28:20 There is no way they'd get away with that nowadays. 😮
Another Eddie Murphy great comedy from 80s - "The Distinguished Gentleman" - it's about politics, really interesting. Consider reacting!
Valentine and Winthorpe made about $250,000,000. They are going to be eating lobster for the rest of their life.
Thanks, Timothée! 🔀 #TimotheeReacts #JohnLandis #TradingPlaces #TradingPlaces1983
1. Aykroyd made his bones (as did Murphy) first on the original Saturday Night Live.
2. He also worked with John Belusi in the Blues Brothers.
3. Beeks is played by the late Paul Gleason. He also played Richard/Dick Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot deputy police chief in "Die Hard".
4. The police officer that tells Louis the powder is PCP is Frank Oz the voice for Kirmit, Yoda and many of the Muppets.
5. The studio didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis for the roll of Olivia because they only saw her as a scream queen, but Landis insisted on casting her. Good for us.
5. I like how sympathetic Coleman is to Billy Ray. You can tell early on that he has no love for the Dukes.
6. In the restaurant when Billy Ray is about to speak it's a play on the old EF Hutton commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens"
7. One of the most paused scenes in VHS history.😍🥰🤩
8. I wonder where Winthorp got all those drugs (and the gun) for only $50 Enen in 1983.
9. When Don Ameche says "Fuck him" regarding his brother he insisted that they use only one take because it didn't want to swear at all. He also had an issue with the N word too.
7?
It's True it's easy to get ahead when you're given a job, house, and permission to screw up till you get the hang of things.
Unfortunately only young Politicians and their friends/family seem to get those opportunities.
"It was a *stone groove*, my man! You are the most RIGHTEOUS---"
"Yeah, right. Just get the fuck out, man, let's go. Shit..."
Such a classic movie 😂
You sandwiched the reaction between two intros mate
Sup timothee. Gr8 reaction, after all who doesn't love comedy.
But if u REALLY love comedy, u & clariss should do reactions for the Friday movie trilogy....SERIOUSLY, you 2 will love it
you got the intro at the end, Brilliant editing haha. i gotta take that like back bro
Yah new editor 0_0 shoulda checked. Didn’t know errors like that could happen. Trimming it out now
Eddie Murphy is a god of comedy!😆
Happy Holidays, y'all!
lol the end of the video, dont worry tim we all make mistakes, your reaction was great
The filmmaker is Aaron Russo. In a video lasting more than 2 hours he talks about his former friendship with Nikolas Rockefeller. I saw the shortened version of 45 minutes in German. The interview took place in 2007, the same year Russo died. Rockefeller told him about an event that was going to happen soon, where afterwards soldiers... that was 9 . 11. He also said that the plan is to microchip everyone.... The video is probably still up on the net
You should see what pcp did to Steve- o and Hunter S. Thompson.
LOL. Oops... Somebody didn't catch the nudity at 14:10
Ya this is a classic, which Eddie has a good amount of, many you mentioned, but an underrated movie of his I'd recommend is Bowfinger
Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop
Yeah, you get the idea
👀👀
Brilliant movie, great reaction
Definitely my favorite Eddie Murphy role
Limitless has New York AND Wall Street
Hey Tim. I assume someone already pointed this out, but at the end of the video you have the intro clip playing again.
Isnt this the first movie jamie lee Curtis showed off her body? 😉
Yep and looked damn good doing it
I love this movie because it’s hilarious but also because it was the first movie that was filmed in my area! To see Philadelphia and a SEPTA Bus on film was mind blowing to me when I seen this as a kid in the mid 90s
Also the old man that plays mortimer was so stressed & unset that he had to say the N word in the movie, I think he tried to get them to change it an when they said no he would only do it once, now it’s always been wrong but in the 80s when people were doing all kinda racially crappy things it always surprised me that he tired to fight it, + you got Dan Aykroyd in black face… I’m surprised this movie hasn’t gotten the chop in recent years
I haven’t seen this movie before.
The actor that plays Beeks is the same one that plays the teacher from "The Breakfast Club". Great movie! Why is the end of your video edited like that? Other than that, great reation.
Great movie. Fyi this movie actually created a real law on Wallstreet for the scum you see in the movie. Another Eddie Murphy movie is The Golden Child. I also highly recommend Eddie Murphy hilarious stand up show in the 80's Delirious and Raw. Another movie like this Brewster's Millions
Never mind Bitcoin. If you can get the report on commodities before released to public, you could be richer than Elon.
Vis Vat... th-th-thhhhh.... Tim.... THis THat
33:32 why the video stopped
2 intros, that was unexpected
This is a great movie. Back when when comedy was funny before the new sensitive generation destroyed humor.
You've mixed the outro with intro ;)
Amazing movie very classic, great reaction Tim.
Why would they only have them empty one pocket? And the one that just happened to have the money in it.
I think Coleman made out the best.
Classic
FYI, your intro is at the end
Unless you were “trading places”
Lol
