The way the actor delivers the line "who are you soldier" is so underrated. He conveys so much in the delivery. You know hes awed and in disbelief at seeing a soldier whom he believed could not be defeated be dispatched so easily. He realizes hes looking at the greatest warrior thats ever been.
The actor who played Boagrius (Nathan Jones) was the largest body builder on earth at one time...6'11" and 380lbs. A monster today...imagine back in the time of Troy.

Although it's worth noting that, without modern medicine to deal with their gigantism, they'd probably live very short, miserable lives due to their runaway growth. Interestingly, in the Iliad, Agamemnon is taunted in a similar manner by Achilles. Eventually, after being inspired, he actually does get into the thick of the fighting, killing numerous Trojan soldiers. He became a true warrior king who fought his own battles.

This was true even for Beowulf who had become king of a land that was not his due to him being a great warrior but ironically after being crowned was not permitted to fight in direct combat, when he did to fight Grendel’s mother and the dragon he ultimately died. But would have rather died a warrior hero than live as a cowardly king.

Even an untrained guy would have had the reflex to proect himslef with hs shield. A slide 360° dodge (Don't know how to better say it in english) with the blade stabbed in the back of his opponent would have been as cinematographic, but a little less unrealistic and a lot less stupid to watch.
The stifling heat everyone had to endure was one of the reasons filming and production was stalled so much. Brad Pitt once spoke about one scene where a heavily built boom operator collapsed right in front of him and Eric Bana mid-take from heat exhaustion.
As a bachelor I saw this at the theatre and I was very impressed. When Achilles started running towards the giant I was expecting a long fight scene but the suddenesse with which Achilles ended the contest was both shocking and exhilarating. A really great action movie.

Which is so weird as Achilles seems as though he would respect hector as an embodiment of that which he taunts ameganemon to be, a king who fights his own battles. Not only does hector fight his own battles he fights every battle, not because he wants to or has a death wish. just to protect that which he loves. He fought for troy and all his people, he fought for paris even when he was in the wrong, he fought for helen and silently accepts her apology before going out to fight and eventually die to Achilles, and after all of achilles rage, he still comes to respect and weep over the killing of such a prime example of a man/prince. Even when hector is preparing to fight achilles in the case he looses, he tells his dad that he hopes he did everything right by him and honors him. Tells his brother exactly what he needed to hear to encourage him, told his wife where to go should the city fall to ameganemon. And as mentioned before him and helen have a silent conversation before he walks out
Achilles words still stands. Hector heroic he may be, still not a king. But you see when the king came to Achilles tent to claim his son's body, Achilles shows him respect

How Achilles has been remembered, purely by his weakness, is not a testament to his weakness itself; rather it is an irony of the testament to the fact that he was so mighty that the only part of him that could get hurt was his heel. Ajax had fought hector twice, once to a draw and the other hector had disarmed Ajax, yet it is well versed in many versions (including the Iliad) of the Trojan War accounts that Achilles had easily beaten Hector. @@PaladinThizz Yes, there were some kings that ran into the front lines of battle but it was much more common for the king to be protected as much as possible. Any army knew back then that once you lose your king, the war is over.
Not his only weakness. He was big, therefore slow - and unarmoured. In a sword fight, his brute strength meant nothing in close combat, he stood zero chance. If we were to match similar sized swordsman in this day and age, I would bet money on the same result.
0:11 when their eyes met for the first time you can see Achilles look away first dismissively, then it cuts to Boagrius smiling bc in his mind Achilles was too scared to look directly at him. When in reality Achilles was probably thinking to himself "why tf am I wasting my time on this guy/you are not on my level", hence he didn't even bother making eye contact.
What cast of leads. Great battle scenes, Achilles & Hectors duel is outstanding & the acting pretty good all round. Spartacus was the standard for years but this, along with Gladiator & Alexander brought the near - East history alive.

It's a nonsense scene. Nobody can move his body faster than the arm of his opponent. You can run around your opponent in football game, but not like in this stupid scene.

Honestly so many older movies that got a mediocre reception when they came out seem like masterpieces in retrospect. Compared to the absolute garbage being produced today we really can appreciate the craft and effort that went into the films back then. Waterworld is another that comes to mind -- panned by critics and did horrible box office, but now seems like a brilliantly crafted epic, thanks to it's incredible practical effects, unique story, and movie-star cast. None of which we see in modern movies anymore.
I was young when this came out, so didn't know about the negative reception... don't understand how anyone can hate on this movie, one of the best of all time
I agree. No cgi and special effects. No over the top martial arts crap. One of if not the best realistic looking choreographed fight scenes in cinema history. In my humble opinion anyways.
@@markball7028 completely agree! The fights all had real stakes and gravity. You never felt “there’s no way he could do that” which made it grounded and real. Now we have fights where a guy will take 20 punches to the face and still be standing but get dropped by a 90 pound woman kicking him once😂

It is far from realistic, he threw away his shield, then stabs a man that would have easily hit him also, then stands in arms reach of hundreds or thousands of men that came for war and challenges them. (Fiction is unhealthy)
@@chalkkey433 Achilles isn’t fully human. He’s a demigod. The slight slow motion editing gives the impression that he climbed up and stabbed him faster than what was shown on screen. In universe, it was so inhumanly fast that his opponent was unable to react.
Boagrius didn't even expect him to reach him. By the time he finally got his sword out of its sheathe he was dead. The difference between arrogance and confidence. Boagrius thought he was better. Achilles knew he was, but he still was prepared.

Interestingly, in the Iliad, Agamemnon is taunted in a similar manner by Achilles. Eventually, after being inspired, he actually does get into the thick of the fighting, killing numerous Trojan soldiers. He became a true warrior king who fought his own battles.

This was true even for Beowulf who had become king of a land that was not his due to him being a great warrior but ironically after being crowned was not permitted to fight in direct combat, when he did to fight Grendel’s mother and the dragon he ultimately died. But would have rather died a warrior hero than live as a cowardly king.

Even an untrained guy would have had the reflex to proect himslef with hs shield. A slide 360° dodge (Don't know how to better say it in english) with the blade stabbed in the back of his opponent would have been as cinematographic, but a little less unrealistic and a lot less stupid to watch.

As a bachelor I saw this at the theatre and I was very impressed. When Achilles started running towards the giant I was expecting a long fight scene but the suddenesse with which Achilles ended the contest was both shocking and exhilarating. A really great action movie.

This line is so crucial since later on we see a prince/leader who commands his army and fights to protect that which he loves(hector). Which is so weird as Achilles seems as though he would respect hector as an embodiment of that which he taunts ameganemon to be, a king who fights his own battles. Not only does hector fight his own battles he fights every battle, not because he wants to or has a death wish. just to protect that which he loves. He fought for troy and all his people, he fought for paris even when he was in the wrong, he fought for helen and silently accepts her apology before going out to fight and eventually die to Achilles, and after all of achilles rage, he still comes to respect and weep over the killing of such a prime example of a man/prince. Even when hector is preparing to fight achilles in the case he looses, he tells his dad that he hopes he did everything right by him and honors him. Tells his brother exactly what he needed to hear to encourage him, told his wife where to go should the city fall to ameganemon. And as mentioned before him and helen have a silent conversation before he walks out

In a sword fight, his brute strength meant nothing in close combat, he stood zero chance. If we were to match similar sized swordsman in this day and age, I would bet money on the same result.

This movie might actually be my favorite War movie of all time. Its so bad ass and just all around an epic story.
0:11 when their eyes met for the first time you can see Achilles look away first dismissively, then it cuts to Boagrius smiling bc in his mind Achilles was too scared to look directly at him. When in reality Achilles was probably thinking to himself "why tf am I wasting my time on this guy/you are not on my level", hence he didn't even bother making eye contact.

It's a nonsense scene. Nobody can move his body faster than the arm of his opponent. You can run around your opponent in football game, but not like in this stupid scene.

This movie gets some hate but I've always enjoyed it! The fight between Achilles and Hector is both incredible and sad at the same time
Honestly so many older movies that got a mediocre reception when they came out seem like masterpieces in retrospect. Compared to the absolute garbage being produced today we really can appreciate the craft and effort that went into the films back then. Waterworld is another that comes to mind -- panned by critics and did horrible box office, but now seems like a brilliantly crafted epic, thanks to it's incredible practical effects, unique story, and movie-star cast. None of which we see in modern movies anymore.
