  • Here is a fantastic animation of the Battle of Long Tan commissioned by the Army Museum of Western Australia located in Fremantle. It is part of their Long Tan exhibit.
The animation was made by Designer/Animator Ian O'Toole who works out of Western Australia - ianotoole.com. He has some other battle animations as well on his own CZcams channel - / ianotoolevideo
I've scaled up the video using AI and added some Australian radio transmissions from the Vietnam War in the background for atmosphere, as the original video has no sound.
Danger Close is Out now On Demand, Digital, DVD and Blu-ray.
Starring Travis Fimmel, Luke Bracey, Daniel Webber, Nicholas Hamilton and Richard Roxburgh.
Directed by Kriv Stenders, Screenplay by Stuart Beattie. Produced by Martin Walsh, John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz.

Rest In Peace to all men and women who have died in all wars, and to those war veterans who are still out there, god blesses you.

The NVA thought that the ANZACS were an easy target. Newly arrived, green troops who they thought would wilt in the face of a determined assault. They soon learned that Aussies and New Zealanders might be a laid-back happy-go-lucky lot, but as history has shown time and tine again, we are no easy beats in a hard fight. The NVA pretty much steered clear of ANZACS wherever possible after that.

Was it intentional to not mention the kiwi artillery support ? Every Aussie soldier that was there remembers them, why didn’t this animated video do that ? Good vid though well done 👍

      6:05
"The artillery observer attached to D Company immediately calls in fire support from Nui Dat."
      7:27
"As 11 Platoon spot further enemy forces encircling their position to the south, accurate artillery from Nui Dat is falling within 100m of their perimeter."
      14:29
"Meanwhile, the enemy, under increasingly accurate artillery fire, recommence their attack on D Company in force."
      15:42
"As the enemy observe the Australian reinforcements arriving, and as artillery continues to fall on their positions, they withdraw from the battlefield in the final few minutes of daylight."
It is mentioned where appropriate. The graphic also shows this via the "sparks" over top the NVA units."

One of the stories getting around about Long Tan is that some genius didn't believe there was an NVA regiment in the area. Note that a third of the battalion is roaming the bush and gets into that situation as a result. Great work by the troops and the Kiwi gunners, but this is a working model of a tactical situation that should never have happened. Second stage is two companies out on their own, also not a desirable situation.

Excelente aporte animado, se comprende perfectamente la estrategia desplegada por los australianos para soportar el ataque de los vietnamita. En menos de 24 horas una batalla de sacrificio y valor.

The NVA would not come out of there holes if the Aussies and Kiwis SAS we're in there area .They called the the Shadow shoulders and they did not take enery presioners to. As Rommel said Aussies to take a position and the Kiwis to hold it to??

The Kiwis were at Coral and Balmoral to with there artillerymen doing a very bloody top job and saving lives to at kind tan to. The NVA did not like it because they were on there heads to.
