Driving Concrete Truck: They Yelled At Me

  • It isn't very often driving a concrete truck that I get to stop by the house to say hi, but today i got that chance.
I started this channel after I began driving cement mixer trucks in Eastern Washington. As a cement mixer truck driver, I enjoy watching trucker videos but rarely came across local truck driving jobs like cement trucks, pick-up and delivery, and construction. Judging by comments and questions I’ve seen on other truck driving channels, many people don’t realize that there is a side to the trucker lifestyle other than long haul OTR driving. I am excited to bring more truck driving content to the genre. I hope you enjoy it!
Please let me know in the comments what you like, what you don’t like, and what you’d like to see more of as I continue making videos. Thanks!

When I first started the new guys always got the older Trucks(only fair), so I had to get use to my Mixer controls on my right side, chute controls on the left up on the panel next to the steering wheel. My last Truck(32 years) had your setup. We called it the Joystick. I loved it, everything right where I needed it. It made my jobs so much easier. It was always cool to see Family when I was Driving, get those big smiles, especially when I gave them a couple blasts with the air horn. Nice looking Family!

Pretty awesome the family got to see you in action. Not a lot of people can say that. Just going to throw this little piece of advice out there, hope you don’t mind, but that contractor you were pouring for was not very informative and with guys like I find it a lot easier just to park the truck and get out and go look at what you’re getting ready to pour. That will give you an idea of how you want to get in there and it gives you a bit of a game plan. Plus you can make sure there’s nothing back there your going to hit or anything like that. And ask them questions too. Hopefully I didn’t over step or anything. Keep up the great work man. Stay safe.

GOAL, Get out and look. Saves a lot of drama later. Some contractors don't like when you do that but it served me well for over 40 years.

T Man I was the same way (retired now). If there was ANY question or confusion or two guys giving signals, I stopped and got out and said, "Fellas, WHO am I looking at? You? Ok, thanks." Back in. If you don't, and something gets bumped, the driver is on the hook.

They're NOT driving the truck. They probably never have, get out and look at everything! I can't stress that enough. Ditches, wires, soft ground, people, etc... Ask for only ONE person to guide you. Tell them "If I can't see you I will not move the truck anywhere" And never presume, never! You want to never say, "I almost hit you"

I guess it’s good as a cement driver to get out of your truck and communicate with the workers to ask them to give you a rundown of what you’ll be doing and exactly where. Communication is key.

There's mostly 2 types of concrete guys: the ones who are playing it by ear and the good ones who unfortunately treat a concrete pour like it's a military operation. Then there's the ones in between who know what they're doing and don't treat it like a rocket launch. They're the best ones to pour for.

I counted the degrees of rotation of the barrel to come up with when the concrete would start down the chute. For instance, dividing the barrel into fourths, I count how many before it starts to pour. I can also get a "ballpark" about how much I have left by how many fourths it takes to start pouring. Really great video! Been in the concrete industry for a little over 25 years. Love the vibrator on the chute! I have seen a lot. You have a wonderful family.
We had a roll over one time. Won't go into details but the truck was going highway speed. The front tire got off the edge and the rest was history. I noticed a section in the video where you were not wearing a seat belt. The only thing that saved the drivers life was his seat belt. The in cab footage is very dramatic how the seat belt saved him.
