  • www.ProCPR.org As of April, 2008, the American Heart Association began promoting hands-only CPR for lay rescuers. Hands-only CPR helps encourage lay rescuers to get involved who may not otherwise help. With this new technique, rescuers deliver 1.5 to 2 inch deep compressions at a rate of approximately 100 compressions per minute without the need to deliver rescue breaths in between. Hands-only CPR eliminates the fear of transmitting disease by removing the mouth-to-mouth component of CPR.
6/2/10 Update - In honor of CPR Awareness Week, ProCPR.org has created a Facebook Application to train people how to perform hands-only CPR and use an AED. You can find the application at / hands_only_cpr Video created by ProTrainings.

I’ve been doing CPR for over 40 years without rescue breaths. I’ve done it hundreds of times and saved hundreds of people. Why did it take until 2008 to make the changes

I had St John’s ambulance teach us to do mouth to mouth..and compressions , BUT another company said only compressions because all your work is gone when you stop compression s to breathe for them . I prefer and agree with just compressions

Hands-only CPR is being encouraged for use by people who are not professional rescuers and may be uncomfortable performing mouth-to-mouth. Pumping on a person's chest without doing breaths is undoubtedly better than doing nothing at all.
By all means, if you are trained and feel comfortable performing full CPR, go for it. But hands-only CPR is a great alternative.

It drives me nuts when I hear 911 calls on CZcams and they say give 2 breaths then 30 compressions. As soon as you stop compression the blood flow and fibrillation slows down…then you have to start again! Just compress! It’s takes all the blood to the major organs. I was taught this by an ex coroner who now tests CPR.

It would be nice to check if he's breathing first :)

If you do hands only, do you do it non stop until EMS gets there? Thank you!

I have to take the CPR test for Adult/Child/Infant in 10 days. I use to take a public safety class and Correct me if im wrong, but isn't it 30 compressions and then 2 breaths, im not 100% on that. Also do i have to tap the person and reconize their unconscious and then tell someone to call 911 in the test?! Please Help! Thank You.

I have been to 2 courses run by 2 different companies. I’m sticking to just compressions because as soon as you stop to give a breath, all your hard work with compressions is now decreasing the blood flow to the organs including the brain
