Self Pleasure, Debunking Girl Defined, and Why it Matters

- May is Mental Health Month, and that is awesome. But did you also know that it is Masturbation Month? In an effort to remove the stigma from self pleasure, we have a whole month dedication to education and understanding.
But then you have our "friends" over at Girl Defined who have very different ideas about what masturbation does and doesn't mean for women; and how they should and shouldn't engage in understanding what their own bodies respond to.
So I bought their "Finding Freedom from Masturbation" curriculum and wen through it, and in the week's Ask a Therapist video I am debunking it for you as well as explaining some of the benefits of self pleasure.

Its pretty brutal in the Church. Youth Group will separate the boys from girls and then interrogate the boys about masturbation. I'm not sure if they do the same with the women
This is an important topic
I remember the first time I was actually curious enough to want to self-pleasure. It was in my twenties after years of being like a purity culture fanatic. I finally started being interested in myself rather than throwing myself on the altar all the time and volunteering at church literally all the time and I just remember feeling so relaxed afterwards.
I was like man I should have been doing this a long time ago😂😂😂😂😂😂 I don't remember feeling shame about it but I do remember wondering if what I was doing was wrong and maybe like feeling confused because I enjoyed it so much. 😊.
And I was actually kind of frustrated because so many people at least where I grew up were having sex young. And even at that time when I was in college, a lot of my friends were exploring their sexuality and here I was constantly being called out for being a virgin or celebrated for being a virgin and I couldn't figure out why. Did people think sex was such an Achilles heel or something so terrible.
Anyways, I am looking forward to teaching my daughter to love and appreciate her body and not feel as if she has to save anything for anyone in order to be valuable in their life, especially if it's supposed to be her partner if she chooses to get married.
