18:35 "We're definitely going to clean all of this up" - he says about the neatest head unit install I've ever seen. I have to admire that perfectionism.
If you’re doing this with one that has the 4.3” display it’s a lot more difficult. You have to transfer the ribbon cables and ac controls compared to this one that still uses the factory bezel.
Fortunately this vehicle still fits a traditional double din headunits. So many new vehicles, headunit swaps are just not a thing as there is no easy replacement
This is so damn cool seeing kits for maintaining the factory features and then adding new features we didn't have before. Very curious what features may be hiding in my Mustang. Saving this video for when I take that leap.
I dont even own a f150 but now I know when I buy one in a year or two I can get an older one for less and just upgrade my radio myself for apple carplay! THANK YOU!
Yep. Always blows my mind when people buy a newer car just for CarPlay. You can get a better head unit than factory AND get better features in an older vehicle
Oh man! I love this video. I have a 2016 f150 and the factory sound sucks in my opinion. I had tried looking up vids like this but none were convincing. Im absolutley excited to do this on my truck. Cant wait for the next vid. Keep up the great work 👍 👏
Crutchfield is definitely one hell of a good company. Thanks for the video, always helpful. I wonder if the Pioneer sound is really much better than the 8" factory system (non-sony) on XLTs and up. It can play lossless music and I don't know that I would hear a difference (given that Focal speakers are installed ofc).
I personally think if you want to go up in a significant way from those systems, anything mid to top line Alpine or JL. Alpine being for SPL heavy systems or my personal favorite JL for the most natural premium sound
Question: Did the maestro retain the steering wheel sensor for the backup camera? Does the line bend when you turn the wheel or is the backup screen static?
This stuff is incredible man ! Love the installation as it is, only with the aftermarket Pioneer head. Can't wait to watch the following videos about speakers, amps and custom subwoofer upgrade 👍
I think Ford has the best factory units with the Sync 3 and 4 systems. I have an older Ford that came with the Sync 2 and upgraded it to the Sync 3 and has been great with Apple CarPlay.
@@chargertalk9023 upgraded to Alpine head unit with the Maestro Kit from Crutchfield. Did the install myself, was fairly straightforward with a few gotchas here and there. Note you lose factory chimes through radio, but no big deal. Already had a sub but now is direct from HU. Then decided I might as well add a 4ch amp, upgrade everything lol. The new head unit will make a big improvement. I originally wanted a Kenwood one but they didn’t have the one I wanted at the time, and if I recall Wireless Carplay options were my limiting factor. I have my 4ch amp turned all the way down. Have two JL 12TW3s in a ported underseat MTI Acoustics box.
This is for the 8 inch screen. If you have the 4.3 inch screen, you'll need to replace the whole display unit. It's more timely and like another commentator mentioned, climate controls need to be hooked up. You'll need the FTR1 kit, not this kit.
I have a 2018 F150 with the B&O system. I would love to have wireless android auto, which is not available with the current Sync system. My only concern is the connectivity to the current, in place, amplifier/subwoofer combo. If I could have the aftermarket head unit and keep the 'good' stuff I currently have, I would 100% do it.
Thank you Mark! For making this video, I have a 2013 F-150 lariat. I want to upgrade my radio to a pioneer 8600nex, for the car play and the rca outputs, I love my car audio. Will the I-datalink retain my factory leather heated and cooled seats as well??. Thank you for your time sir.!
Exceptional video. It may seem petty, but as much as I’d like to add an aftermarket head unit, i refuse to put one in because they all seem to feel like it’s required to slap their brand/logo front and center. I prefer a clean OEM look.
I just did the Sync3 update and swapped the USB port to get CarPlay. For audio, I'm going direct to my AudioControl amps via the BT adapter, plus I have an Apple Airport express running mini Toslink to a Cambridge Audio Magic DAC for wireless lossless via Airplay ; ) There's a module that allows you to get video on the 8" OEM F150 screen. I'll be using that for my SpeedIR thermal camera.
Wow, yes this video is and was very detailed so detailed I felt I could do it myself but I'll leave it to the pros. Have a 2019 F250 super duty work truck and this will hopefully be in it if I can find the proper place for the installation. All the Aditional features are a bonus and definitely a must. Thanks for sharing your video and knowledge.
Love the install. I have an 18 F150 XLT sport with Hertz speakers and a JL 1000 HD amp with a JL 13.5 TSW. I want to change the deck out and add another amp for the rest of the truck. Little at a time. Can’t wait to see the rest of your install
Hey Mark, great stuff, I have a challenge for you that would make for great content. I would like to see you Design a subwoofer box that will sit behind the rear seat of the F150. under the seat one, you did was great, but designing one that is hidden and can produce bass? I've seen it done but would love to see what you come up with. Also, design it to mount the Amp too.
Great video and I'll definitely be using it for reference later this week when I install my Pioneer DMH-WC5700NEX in my '16 F150 with the 4" screen. Where did you mount the Bluetooth microphone?
Would this still retain the trail and 360 cameras on the Raptor ? Also is the camera quality better with the screen because it's terrible on the factory unit lol Thanks
I ordered the 9 inch pioner n best buy n they gonna do the install n just realized you said about if the truck had the speaker on top n i guess mine does has a gril didn’t think it was a actual speaker thought it was for appearance or something anyway best buy has a fit where you put the info of my vehicle n it didn’t ask if it had the the speaker with the gril on top so does it matter or what?😊
I'm installing the same Pioneer 4660 Head unit in my 2015 F150, but I'm having an issue with the back up camera only showing a black screen. I've double check that I have the same brown AV cable connected to the Yellow back up camera AV in your video. Any ideas why this may be? Thanks
I just purchased a 2020 Ford F-150 Lariat with the B&O audio. Crutchfield says I shouldn't replace the audio system. Just wondering why? I'd like to have one of the Pioneer systems like you installed on this truck.
I live in Australia and I have A 2015 Falcon Ute with Ford's Sync2 ICC, the Bluetooth no longer works and its AU$1100 for a new unit or AU$600 for a repair. I might have to try some of these options but the Sync2 unit controls climate as well.
It might be simply the bluetooth module that has gone faulty. In most ford vehicles that I have seen, the bluetooth module is actually separate from the radio/display. Another option is the Sync3 headunit. Probably just as pricey as a Sync2 unit, but with a number of the options that were talked about in this video.
Amazing video. Crutchfield is limiting the depth on the F-150 (and receiver choice), I assume, based on that bracket you said could be removed. Will that bracket add another inch or two of clearance? Thanks!
Ok so I did this install to my 2015 xlt non Sony system. I'm using a pioneer dmh 2600nex with maestro rr. Works until it doesn't. Factory Volume knob and steering wheels stop working randomly and only way I can reset is to go into pioneer settings and select maestro reset. Then it works but I tried refreshing the rr and bought another rr programed it again , still has issue at times. Can't be the Audio control module as you remove that to install this right?
Hey, Mark. I upgraded to a pioneer 4500nex in my 2015 f150 two years ago. Both pioneer heads failed. Bought through crutchfield and the first was replaced under warranty. The second was just out of warranty. I found that the idatalink had terrible connectivity issues and steering wheel controls would occasionally stop working. Another big issue is the climate control backlighting would turn back on about 40 seconds after I closed my truck and run my battery down. Finally after speaking to crutchfield probably 3 dozen times, we concluded that this series f150 doesn’t play nice with after market radios. I just wondering if you have heard the same thing? The 3.5” stock screen is terrible, but I don’t have any problems anymore. I have appreciated your channel and learned a lot over the years.
great video Mark! the one question i have one of the features i like about my stock radio is when i receive a call and the A/C fan is on high it turns it down does the Maestro do that ?
I purchased all the other accessories from Crutchfield but not the radio. Got a better deal at Amazon. How can I get the same diagram page you have for connecting the wires together from all the pieces?
Idatalink also makes a harness that connects straight to the factory SiriusXM antenna and gps antenna. I’m a little confused where is the camera module. Did they get rid of it for 2018 and up? I have a dmx907s I am contemplating on installing but I don’t want to go down in screen size from the 8 inch or lose my SiriusXM travel link. I’m sorry I still think aftermarket head units have a long way to go as far as features.
Hey mark you probably won’t have time to answer but maybe someone sees and offered advice. I currently run 8 channel setup but really want to add in a 9th currently I use a Rockford dsr1 not sure what all dsps can be used with stock sony unit using the maestro
Does anyone know if switching from the factory head unit on the 13th gen F150s affects connectivity with the Sync Connect App on my smartphone? (Location, remote start, locks, fuel, etc)
For a '13 F150, with factory Sony system do I have to pull the center console out to access the factory amp when using a Maestro Rr? Or all the connections done in the dash?
This is the video I have been hoping for. I have a 2013 F150 with the Sony system. I have a set of Jl audio c3 5x7 components and a set of c2 5x7 coax. I was going to keep the factory amp to run the new speakers, but when I hooked up one c2 in the rear it didn’t really sound better than the Sony speaker. If the factory amp not good enough to run the JL’s? Is it better to change the head unit first and keep the factory amp amp and speakers or keep the factory head unit and run new amps, and speakers first?
I have a video idea and something i am curious about (audioheads forgive me) if you are using a external amp and dac, does it matter what your head unit is, say for instance you get a boss android/iphone ready head unit (I can hear the shooting) is their preouts just as good as the big boys?
Excellent video. Love the Kenwood stereo in my 18 F150. So much better than the stock Sync. The iDatalink was the most important feature for me since it allows me to use the dash volume knob with the Kenwood as well as the steering wheel controls. Awesome. Now I just need to get a Kenwood with capacitive HD screen. Also that large metal bracket behind the screen was fun as hell to remove. /s
