While it's easy in the U.S. to think about ultra-modern LMGs in new fancy calibers with wiz-bang optics and stuff...the reality is that for 94% of the world...a modernized PKM is absolutely the best GPMG in existence, by a long margin. Lightweight, insanely reliable, available in the two major calibers a nation is likely to have (7.62x51 NATO and 7.62x54R), a proven track record, ease of maintenance and parts/servicing, etc. It also likely costs about 10% of what an ultra-modern SIG MG would cost them, while shooting cheaper/available ammo, etc.

At various times, Yugoslavia used primarily American tanks and fighter jets, at other times, Soviet, and eventually domestically made. Small arms happened to be dominated by Soviet designs, but this is not an accurate picture of the entire Yugoslavian arms supply situation. The same goes for Finland.

Both countries wanted reliability. That's why they both have AK platform as a main infantry weapon. As much as other guns improved reliability, AK is still going to be the best, and during the wartime when you don't have time to clean it, Zastava m70 will just work and chug out any round. As war in Ukraine showed, its all about mechanised battalions. Most fights happen within 100 m, mostly even less than 50 m even though Ukraine is basically just a plain open field. That bit of extra accuracy on AR15 doesn't mean much in those engagments. Also people compare fully decked out civilian AR15 to old AKM platforms and say AK sucks and recoil is strong. New AKs are out for a long time. New m21 is fully modular, with easy calliber switch and shoots grendel. Its perfect. Reliability of an AK, modularity and ergonomics of AR, and balistics of grendel round. Perfect. Yugoslavia and now Serbia was always neutral. We don't like USA and we don't like Russia (Soviet Union). Thats why we don't care for either side. What works works, doesn't matter where it comes from.

Its burnishing partially fell off from intensive use, so I was constantly fighting rust on the field Easy to shoot and heavy to carry (12,5kg) and a big, big consumer of ammunition. During the war in 1999 I had the opportunity to try M84 from my comrade, it is really accurate and it was brand new black with wood stock.

It comes with two barrels (one for RnR and second as pi$$ practice - for cooling, as long as barrel is whitish), massive tripod (with AA feature, and for some reason always ends up stuck between your ribs), 2-3 ammo box with belts and small manual machine for loading belts.

As a scout, I had long marches in the field every day during my training, and I was quite bothered by the weight and ergonomics of the "Ceca". Everything changed after the first live firing. I realized that I had a beast in my hands and something worth carrying. From then on, I loved this MG. All the stories about its accuracy are true. I had better shooting results than my colleagues who were using the M-70, and often even those who had the M-76 rifle.

As a former M-84 tank gunner, I confirm the rigidness of the Ceca. We used the M-86 or tank version of the M-84, which is originally called PKT (Kalashnikov Machingun for Tanks). When firing at the tank sooting range, we were just changing the shooters (tank gunners) and ammo belts, while tank was doing shooting excercise all day long. We were changing barrels only if the soldiers were faster with shooting and taking turns on one tank. By the end of one shooting day, one barrel totals around 10.000 rounds.

It actually makes the weapon more complicated since the bullet must be pulled backwards from the belt and moved over to be inline with the bore. The older M9 disintegrating link used for the 30-06 Browning MGs did the same thing. I don't really know why the US and NATO decided to go with the M13 push-through design, but it seems that pulling that pulling the bullet from the link during the backstroke of the op-rod and chambering on the return seems to help consistency, going by the PK's reputation.

It's only drawback is having to worry about whether your barrel is pointing up or down when you are carrying one cocked. They have the issue that the round can fall from the claw that pulls rounds from the belt if you are not careful with that. It generally causes a nasty stoppage with PKM variants. I think most end up only cocking the gun just before they fire to mitigate it.
