  • How to video showing step by step how to overhaul the parking brake on an XC90 - INCLUDING CABLE REPLACEMENT. Also covers Stripdown and maintenance of the parking brake assembley, replacement of brake shoes and springs, and adjustment of the brakes once reassembled.
    A long video, but a lot covered, and a great overview for the home mechanic as it addresses all possible issues with this known XC90 problem!
    During the video I made reference to another vid showing the process of replacing the rear discs and pads on a V70 - also on the P2 platform and exactly the same process:

    Brilliant video. I've been looking for a video on the complete process, especially where the 2 cables come in to the body, and where they join. Just need a dry day to do it on now :) Thanks for taking the time to make this and upload.

      @damstv8717 if the cable is moving freely in the plastic sleeve, it really is that simple!… just remember to use it, or it will be just the same in a couple of years…

    Nicely done! You said to get some springs just in case any get damaged. Is that a dealer part?

    • @bigtalltim
      @bigtalltim  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Hi Dafydd! No - surprisingly, the springs are readily available from all sorts of aftermarket places and not too expensive! I got mine for £16 from euro car parts… think they called it a handbrake assembly accessories pack… the pack has enough spring to refit both rear wheels. Thanks for watching!

      Cheers! I couldn’t find anything else out there that covered the centre console and cable bit, so figured it was worth taking the time; my guess is that most folks doing this job are against the clock for an annual inspection so it never makes the cut! Thanks for watching!

    If you don't tighten the cable adjuster all the way against the circlip it would have been easier to extend the rod on the other end?

    • @bigtalltim
      @bigtalltim  Před 3 měsíci +1

      You are welcome. The adjuster needs to be tightened for the ratchet to engage, so this is unfortunately just one of those jobs where some force is required. There is a proper tool for tensioning it, but it costs hundreds of pounds… thanks for watching!

    Pardon me for this question! I just bought my very first Volvo Xc90 2003 with a 2.5 Petrol. I am going to do this job aswell as it has a bad footbrake, but i am also replacing the discs and pads all the way around. I've only worked on cars with the more standard handbrake cables for handbrake levers, and with new discs and pads, the new handbrake wire does take some driving before it settles in perfectly. You reused the old disc and pads on this XC90, and you adjusted the wires, but did you adjust them according to how worn your old parts are, or is the way you did it the same when brand new discs and pads are installed aswell?
    I guess what i am asking about is if the footbrake will need to settle in by usage over time with brand new discs and pads? Just the same as with a regular handbrake. If yes, then should i still adjust the new footbrake cable the same as you did?

    • @bigtalltim
      @bigtalltim  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Great question! You have to adjust the wires in the way I showed with all Volvos on this platform - even those with a handbrake rather than a foot pedal like the v70 and s60. The reason for engaging the brake a little before tightening the cable is to that the operation takes up the slack, but does not over tighten (which would leave the brake always on). It will not make a difference whether the disc is new or old - good luck… let us know how it goes!!

    Hola. He cambiado las zapatas nuevas y en la zona de las zapatas en la rueda no hay dorma de poder ajustar mas y desde dentro del coche lo he ajustado al maximo y el freno llega al final del recorrido y no sujeta el coche.
    Que puede der?

    • @bigtalltim
      @bigtalltim  Před 22 dny

      This is where you need to use the pliers and spanner to separate the two halves of the connector just in front of the spreader - 36:01 you really have to force it!
