    • @sylbakers2349
      @sylbakers2349 Před 3 lety +12

      Italians in NYC are different because most of the times they're there with the only goal to succeed in their professional life. They don't have time and the right mindset to enjoy life like Italians living in Italy, closer to their families and roots do.
      I was one of them until two years ago then I decided I needed to move back.
      Italian Americans most of the time are almost completely disconnected to their Italian roots culturally and mentally speaking.

    • @petera618
      @petera618 Před 3 lety +1

      @@sylbakers2349 That's very unfortunate. My experience is quite different. I grew up in a close-knit Sicilian community in San Diego's Little Italy. Most of the people I grew up with including myself are children of more recent immigrants. We grew up speaking the dialect and I myself studied Italian in school. We were brought up with a strong sense of the Sicilian culture and had knowledge of where we came from and we are very close to one another. Most of us have very strong ties with Sicily and frequently visit our relatives as they also visit us. Both sides of my family are from the same town and my grandparents never sold their house which made things easier for our extended stays. Since my family were mostly fishermen, they chose San Diego because of the fishing industry, not to mention the Mediterranean climate we have here, we cure are own olives, dry our tomato paste in the sun, grow figs, citrus, etc. Their way of cooking wasn't altered like many places in the US. Most of us know one another and our local church is the cultural center in which we still have our religious processions and saints feasts. We would gather together at a local beach every Sunday during the summer, the local people would refer to it as San Diego's Italian Riviera. Those were the days but unfortunately with the newer generation, change is inevitable.

      A me piacciono quasi sempre i formaggi, e dico purtroppo, essendo generalmente grassi e difficili da digerire. Certo, ce ne sono dei tipi che non mi fanno impazzire come quelli molto stagionati e puzzolenti, quelli che paiono scaglie di sale e in più credo che mai assaggerei prelibatezze locali come il formaggio con i vermi sardo. Ho sempre detestato le interiora e la trippa, e la cosa strana è che quest'ultima l'ho "scoperta" in Calabria, dove ero presa in giro dai parenti perché neppure volevo assaggiarla, e poi mi hanno detto che è anche un piatto tipico della cucina di Roma, da cui provengo.

    Not many people actually eat pizza with pineapple in the UK but I can tell you where it comes from. In the Uk there is an old fashioned dish called gammon and pineapple. Gammon is like a bacon steak and is very salty. Having pineapple on top cuts through the salt and is quite a pleasant contrast. So that dish somehow got transferred onto pizzas. When i visited Northern Italy years ago I was told that the classiest pizza is the margheurita because pizzas with lots of toppings are for farmers. Is that true?

    • @erminiorovani9445
      @erminiorovani9445 Před rokem +1

      I'm italian, I wouldn't say "farmers". A common pizza in Italy goes from "margherita" or "bufala" (this one is margherita with buffalo milk mozzarella, while margherita contains simple cow milk mozzarella) to 2-3 different toppings (usually). But every pizzeria has a special pizza, with 4-5 toppings, but these pizzas aren't so commonly ordered. It's usage to call these ones "american (USA) pizzas" (sorry for all USA people), in order to say that there are too many toppings that you can't tell all the flavours. In Italy pizzas are totally different from USA. Our ones have way less dough, less toppings (usually), so generally in Italy a pizza stands for a meal. When eating pizza in restaurants, generally everyone has their own pizza. Instead, while eating it at home we tend to sample every pizza, generally no one has their own, but we taste a slice of everyone. Furthermore, in Italy, pizza is a typical dinner dish. It's uncommon seeing someone italian eating it at lunch. P.S. if tou want to taste the REAL italian pizza, eat it in the Campania region (Naples' region)
