CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rob (Liam Neeson) confronts a band of cattle thieves and kills their leader.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The 18th century Scottish legend of Robert Roy MacGregor comes to life in this stylish adaptation of the swashbuckling novel by Sir Walter Scott. Liam Neeson stars as the title character, a cattle drover and proud head of a Highlands clan who takes a one thousand pound loan from the royal Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) in order to make a profit on some livestock that will keep his struggling people alive through the coming winter. One of the Marquis' henchmen, wily expert swordsman Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth) learns of the loan from the nobleman's factor, Killearn (Brian Cox), and steals the money by murdering Rob Roy's best friend MacDonald (Eric Stoltz). Unable to repay the loan and unwilling to give up his land, Rob Roy becomes a fugitive, hunted by none other than Cunningham, who rapes Rob Roy's wife Mary (Jessica Lange). Scotch-British politics come to a boil over the Rob Roy affair, leading to an officially sanctioned showdown between the stoic farmer and Cunningham.

Just vermin. And he was ready to exterminate them. He wasn't in conflict with them. He was just giving them the option to live.

Only one word could describe this movie, masterpiece .
Amen
Great movie, seen it about 10 times.
Rob Roy’s idea of honour always makes me smile though. Like it’s perfectly ok to steal cattle for yourselves and your clan... the mafia have a similar code of honour
hi, it's similar to what native norteamericans were doing, stealing horses to gain honour, and a good horse, regards
@@prigual2901 every warrior-society based on cattle(a good that can be moved and stolen¨) has this kind of behavior. vikings, celts, greeks, celtiberian, japanese...as oposed to agricultural-urban like societies.
Cultures of honor typically possess little actual honor. What they mean by honor is actually "image" or "reputation".
one of the best films based in scotland
@@prigual2901 There was little concept of ownership; Land and cattle is either won or lost.
Neeson played that role brilliantly......this film didn't have the impact of something like Braveheart, but in terms of performance Big Liam really nailed it 👌
I was way to young when both came out but Braveheart was the only one they talked about.
I bet this one was more accurate?😄
@@V4Now nope this not accurate either lok
I was one of those who enjoyed Braveheart more at the time. But looking back with the perspective of a couple of decades' reflection, I think this film holds up far better. Braveheart was flashier, and shot for a more epic tone -- a fight for a whole nation's freedom, as opposed to a Highland clan leader's dispute with a wealthy aristocrat. But I think this movie has aged better. It's not because of historical accuracy; in terms of detail, the two films are about equally historically inaccurate. But with Rob Roy, the inaccuracies are merely of detail (e.g. the Duke of Argyll, to whom Rob Roy eventually turns for support, in actual history was _not_ a Jacobite, as portrayed in the film, and was loyal to the British crown). With Braveheart, the inaccuracies are all-encompassing, to include anachronistic nationalist sentiments that are just out of place in the 13th century. Also, with Braveheart, it gets the Hollywood treatment: the heroes are just _too_ perfectly selfless and heroic, the villians are just _too_ diabolically villainous. It's all brilliantly filmed, and highly entertaining, but over the top. This movie is better grounded and just feels more plausible and realistic.
Rob Roy, in my humble opinion, is much better. Guess I look at it from a women's perspective, imagining perfect men should behave, look at the world, like Rob(Liam) does in this move. Somehow character fits perfectly, so naturally with Liam, and his looks. Both are grate masculine roles, but can't see that nobility, all that that men should be, in Mell the way I see it in Liam here. I always get back to this movie.

Even acting as an Scotsman Liam still sounds Irish. Haha
@Howard Pearcey And no stone walls in between?
Aren't Scots and Irish both celts? they are probably geneteically very close. All of western Europe are close related, I thought, except for the Iberians, who are closer to the Romans and Greeks.
@@wilsonblauheuer6544 a lot of the Irish descended from Normandy originally as well
Highland accents sound quite similar to Irish.
@Howard Pearcey
Oh for gods sake. Ireland didn't even exist until well after Scotland, England, and Wales were well established.
And archeology already proved there were Goidelic Celts in what became the Scottish side of Dal Riata just as long as they were in what became Ireland.
And Ulster was settled by 17th century Southern-Scottish and Northern-English farmers.
'Returning immigrants"? Don't make me laugh, Howie.
A GREAT movie. I didn't realize what a great actor Neeson is
Typical picnics in the Highlands.
Notice at 1:47, not only does he have men on the hills, he had one of his men hidden 30 feet from the group. VERY poor of the tinkers not to have some sort of watch schedule. Could have had the entire band slitting their throats before anyone was the wiser.
I think that was Miracle Max's witch. "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife, although after what you said I dunno if I wanna be THAT anymore!"
If you want a laugh turn the subtitles on and watch how difficult it is to translate the Scottish accent 0:09 'Up get up yep one shot like at us take a cookie' 😂😂😂
Yes Mr. Rob Roy, I take a cookie to go 😂
"storm beef" sounds like something you'd eat in Breath of the Wild.

@@josepadilla9664 That's hilarious 😂
This is honestly one of the best bloody films I have ever seen. But have no idea why no one's heard of it. It is up there with Braveheart
I thought the fight with Mc Gregor one of the best scenes ( skill and speed beats strength and brute force ).
@Gigi Parker That's exactly why hardly anyone has heard of this film...it was in the cinemas around the same time as Braveheart and I think Braveheart stole the audience.
They were both on more or less at the same time. Sadly the American Hollywood film stole the limelight. The same reason British WW2 battles are sometimes retold with Americans as the heroes for the box office draw. It's a money game.
It's better than "Braveheart", imo.
This film suffers from there being far too much injustice to turn people's stomachs, for the small amount of justice that is delivered at the end.
Additionally, there isn't enough fighting to make it an action movie.
This movie made me go on a yolo trip to scotland, got to see glencoe, what a life changing expierience

"Throw down now and I'll spare you... all but one. There's a price to being a leader of men, Tom."
Seriously, every other line in this movie is a gem.
Fine, I'll watch Rob Roy again
you've really got to work to get stabbed by a dagger without even aiming your sword at the enemy.
He had his sword leveled right at him, but instead of just stabbing him he makes this huge choreographed blow while stepping in way to close. Then the old woman does the same exact thing. This scene is super hokey.
They were probably hung over too
He wanted an honorable death, as opposed to being dragged to Montrose at the end of a rope, hung, and be left hanging till his body rots. He also knew that even if he could kill Rob Roy, that the rest of the MacGregors would hunt down him and his crew as a matter of honor. He needed to show that he put up some kind of fight.
mesmerizing scene, pure brilliance

Can't blame him. His reach was so great, he used a dagger to make things even.
awesome movie
Liam Neeson 😎
Watched this loads of times and still have no idea how Rob defeats Tam here. No one with a broadsword should lose to a guy with a dirk knife
He swung it like a baby with a rattle. It was easy enough to grab his arm. Had he tried to just stab instead maybe.
its obvoiusly a narrative trick to surprise the audience and to show how difference the fighting skills were form the two.
At close range you could, the advantage of the sword is in having a longer reach against the guy with the dagger, his mistake was to move in so close.
Tom ran himself onto the dagger… He wasn’t trying to win he realized this was his opportunity to die honorably as opposed to swinging in the gallows just like Rob said. He never swung his sword really he just kind of put it up as he ran into Rob’s waiting knife
some sort of quick sidestep is inferred......
One of the best movies ever made...the cast were magnificent.
Damn, that's sword's been sharpened once or twice.

One of my favourite films. A follow up would have been great....but probably wouldn't have been as good so I'll just enjoy this one.
This is based on a book and the book didn't have a follow-up.
It has to be the Walter Scott book of the same name. Could be wrong, haven't checked. But we know more about Rob Roy and his adventures, so the material is there....

Rob Roy in real life fought in the battle of GlenShiel along side my ancestors
No he didn't. He turned up late and then decided it wasn't worth fighting. He did the same thing as the battle of Sherrifmuir. Rob Roy was only ever in one fight in his life and he lost it.

Liam Neeson loves trying to reclaim things that come in 32's, doesn't he?
I see what you did there haha
Doing his job is one thing, sneering at them for stealing when he was a thief, if reformed, is another.

Even though Braveheart was the the big deal here in wee Scotland. Well tbf all over around this time.
This seemed like a better film, (story telling wise I mean). Maybe it's about the wardrobe dep't, and attention to detail, that cuts it with me . Plus the places are all familiar to us West Coast Scotsmen.
Don't get me wrong If you weren't moved after watching Braveheart you're half deid.
I think because the Wallace was a great hero of mine. I noticed a lot of well shite. Doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Just a bit to many whoppers mixed in. What puts me off watching it most, is the Blue painted dials. Either a reference to the ancient Picts or the not so ancient Hampdenites (better known as the Tartan -tran- Army)

I thought this was a great old fashioned movie despite the dodgy accents of leads. But the funniest thing was RRM was known to be one of the biggest cattle thieves in Scotland. It got so bad that he and his Clan were eventually outlawed by the King,
Yep. The man was a coward, thief and traitor. The was no good qualities to the man whatsoever.
@@popeye5989 It could be worse, he could've been played by Mel Gibson
At least in the script he never denies being a cattle thief - just not stealing from people who had paid and trusted him to protect their cattle. Like the "honest politician" - once he's bought, he stays bought.

Neeson was brilliant in this movie. I could see George Lucas watching this and thinking that Neeson had the perfect look and demeanor to play a Jedi - not to mention he was great in the sword fighting scenes as well. What a great movie - and Roth as Archy is one of the greatest villains in any movie.
Shown like it was.
Tam was honorable
The McGregor clan were outlawed from 1610-1770.
Wrong, it was 1603 to 1774, there was a reprieve by Charles II between 1661 and 1693, when William III re-imposed the proscription against Clan Gregor as a punishment for them supporting the Jacobite cause. The proscription was finally ended by George III in 1774 and MacGregors were given the same rights as any British citizen.
The main reason the MacGregor's were proscribed was the battle of Glen Fruin (February 7th 1603) when a force of 350 MacGregor's on foot fought 800 Colquhoun's, 500 on foot and 300 on horseback. The battle turned in to a rout after the MacGregor's led the Colquhoun horsemen into the bog at the head of the glen which wouldn't support their weight, between 140 to 200 Colquhoun men died against only 5 MacGregor fatalities. James VI was so outraged at the MacGregor's slaughtering so many Colquhoun's that he abolished the MacGregor name altogether.
Notice how there's no cattle to be seen, just some mooing heard for a bit early on.
There's a dead one that's supposedly being butchered, at the rock on the right of the screen. If you were looking for something black and white, nuh uh. They decided to show a Highland cow with that red hair. @2:09

This was always a far better film than 'Braveheart'. Although it still wasn't historically accurate, it far more so than 'Braveheart'.
Mcgregor was in reality 4.8 and was once head of clan wee Bernie before joing mccregor clan
What's interesting is that Rob intended to kill Tom no matter what, as he announced he would. That's murder by any definition, to apprehend thieves and just decide to kill one for effect.
He had a price on his head, that means it's not murder, it's bounty hunting, which was legal. Maybe not very nice, but legal.
"What's interesting is that Rob intended to kill Tom no matter what, as he announced he would. That's murder by any definition"
In a feudal system when a nobleman has put a death warrant on someone's head, it's not illegal, therefore not murder. Besides that, he even offered the option to be captured and executed under the law, along with his accomplices.
