How much power can we add with just bolt-on parts?
We’ve got a new air filter, a fuel pump, a boost solenoid, new spark plugs, bigger injectors and a full exhaust to fit in just one day. We’re then off to dyno to have the car mapped by a Subaru specialist.
We’re trying to beat a supercar with just $15,000 in mods and this might be the last piece of the puzzle. We’ve got all the parts we need to make a massive power gain on our Subaru and they’re all parts you could fit on your driveway. We needed to fit all these parts in a day so we could get the car mapped, but it all went horribly wrong.

I must say, 20-30 minutes on these types of videos is the perfect length. 12-15 is a bit too short for me
definitely
12 to 15 sounds like pretty long to me.
Absolutely agree
@@RayanM50B25 you obviously never watched top gear
@@RayanM50B25 honestly I think 5 - 7 is too long for anybody
You guys are absolutely killing it with this series - while the production value is fairly low its actually perfect for what it is - you guys are showing you don't need fancy this or that - you need good chaps with great chemistry and personality - and of course interesting petrolhead content!
Nothing beats watching car guys having a bad day then ended up with great results. I want this on a box set!
They just need to carry on ripping off DONUT MEDIA until they get demonetized
@@psychedelicphlegm6799 Riiiiight, sure they are. No clue what you're referring to but you do realize that one CZcams channel doesn't own an idea and that many channels do very similar videos and or ideas and it's in no way "ripping someone off", right? Actually from your comment no, no you don't understand that. Either way these guys are, in my opinion, MUCH more fun to watch than the Donut guys - nothing against them but they aren't at all my cup of tea and I suspect from the success of the channel and this series others agree.
Demonetized for doing similar videos, wow, if that were remotely true most of CZcams would be demonetized. HAHA
@@psychedelicphlegm6799 apparently making a car fast on a small budget is exclusive to Donut Media. Lol ok buddy.
Shame about the cheap exhaust. Should of bought a better unit which is would fit and work better. You had a big budget not the normal subaru owners one. 🙄
Wonder how much go faster stripes would affect the performance
Like 3 seconds a lap
Obv adds 3hp per stripe
cant believe ppl still dk this🙄🙄🙄
Red paint would give you 5 seconds easy, da red onez go fasta
at least +20hp at the wheels
At least 69 hp
Great result guys and great to meet you both 👍😎
Thanks for the tune! Just gotta beat that Lambo now! Callum
Mine is one of those blobeye wrx making 303 on a td04, you mapped it last year and still going strong
@@davidandrews4330 awesome David 👌
I don't know, I really liked to see them sort of fumble around and figure things out. I feel like they brought in a Subaru Jedi Master when they called you.
You may have nearly 6k leftover, but if you counted in Richard's pay after this headache, then surely this project is over budget! 😅 Mechanics like him are priceless.
I've been loving this Subaru build series!
These are always the kind of car videos I enjoy the most, not the supercars and the fancy shit, but the relatable stuff
I agree, I think also because this car is not too expensive they don't have to be very careful with it, they can trash it around. Plus the mods are closer to reality to us then let's say staging an Audi R8 and being " ohhh it's so fast I wish you can feel how fast it is ".
@@cleonzenasro2998 exactly, we can actually do the same things to our cars it just feels familiar
11:49 is very relatable, as is 12:25
Whatever you all pay Richard, it isn't enough 😂 Love the series! It actually brought me to the channel. Love how relatable the content and the hosts are!
Callum rapidly blasting F bombs had me with the dumbest cheek to cheek smile
What? You mean they should be PAYING him??? :p
as a wrx wagon owner as well. the up pipe is a dick of a job to do. for anyone watching who is going to do the same job. undo the two bolts on the engine mounts. undo the a bolt on the pitch mount seeing as youll have the intercooler off already and jack up the engine with a block of wood under the sump. ive removed a catted up pipe from a bugeye wagon and recently a 03 turbo foz this way. means you you don't have to remove the turbo. and, underrated mods to do to these cars. group n sti gearbox mount. upgraded pitch stop mount (whiteline, perrin, ect), rear sway bar and heavy duty mounts. top 3 mods to do.
WRX was a great selection for this series! Great aftermarket support for cheap mods. Keep it up!
The mods are cheap, but some things can take so much more time because the boxer configuration
@@b.w.9392 yea but then u start to forget all the annoyances as soon as u start driving
they copied donut media don’t support these guys
@@iCostiG how? Modding cars on a budget is a tale as old as time
You've just got to know how to work on these .....if it's a weekend job probably book the week off aswell 🤣🤣
Dyno and suspension setup will gain so much time.
Was thinking that too - a proper corner balance and track focused setup should gain at least 1-2 seconds with a capable driver, which they have.
Needs Anti Lift Kit control arm bushings. Pretty cheap too
@@jonathanphilips4510 are those worth it on the 15+?
That is amazing! I expected a 30-40 hp gain but holy crap did I underestimate. Thank you guys so much for this content btw, the chemistry's great!
you make 40hp on a totally stock motor with just a tune, with way faster spool up.
I loved this ! This might seriously be the best content on CZcams
Bigger turbo and intercooler imo and Go more hard-core with the weight saving
It's pretty wild how big of a bump in power you can get from bolt-ons and a tune. Modern turbo cars are pretty impressive. There was a time not long ago where to see that kind of gain, you had to go from NA to forced induction.
I have been waiting for this video for soooooo long!!! This series is great!
Easy 350hp to 400hp with front mount intercooler bigger turbo and exhaust, Walbro 255fuel pump, injectors and remap then your sorted boys.
A decent top mount would be better for this, they’re not chasing high numbers just a fast car
Shoulda done a down pipe at least though
Duncan is a breath of fresh air isn’t he? Obviously loves what he does, and shares in the joy of his customers when he’s worked his magic. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Even though I'm late to this series. You can see on his face, he enjoys what he does and love Subarus even more
Definitely intercooler needed. And with those supporting mods you can easily go bigger turbo
The joys of subaru flat fours... loving the series!
That dyno must be VERY generous. I have a 07 wagon and had to put a a VF48 turbo, grimmspeed top mount, id 1050 injectors, TGV delete, and full turbo back exhaust to get 298HP… with a 2.5 L…..
They are reporting crank HP. But still pretty big numbers for modest mods on a 2.0.
Wrong. Engine dynos measure crank. Chassis dynos measure whp. Since the engine was in the car and the car was on the dyno it was whp. Which is weird, because those numbers are pretty dang high for stock turbo and IC.
Those numbers are at the wheel. They aren’t measuring at the crank
They are clearly measuring at the wheels. Those are not crank figures. Even if they were they would still be WAY high for that setup
@@boristheblade0954 "Driven Media

At the crank. For some reason that's how we do it in the UK. Callum"
I've been really enjoying this series. Looking forward to seeing the final results.
FYI, the normal way to remove the up pipe is to loosen the engine mounts and jack the engine up on one side to rotate it out the way.
I was wondering about that exhaust! I paid $1500 for mine on the e30, I thought, how on earth, $380??? Riiiiiiiiiight, it's crap.
This video perfectly sums up what it is like to work on a Subaru, a massive ball ache but worth it when all done! Good work guys, and still with £6k of the budget left!? Get a forged block, bigger turbo and FMIC and it will be a monster! By the way, I think the stock injectors were 440cc's
Forged block for 6k is a bit much. You could do rods, pistons and an sti vf34 turbo, not accounting for labour that should work. A ej207 sti engine can hold about 360hp (with stock turbo) with rods/pistons about 400. Depending on how different the wrx ej205 is anywhere between 360 and 400 is possible
Subaru are the easiest vehicles to work on
Anybody still remember how the car still had to be "practical"? I wonder how fast the Subaru would still be with your moving stuff in the back of the "van:?
Smh they back peddled us.
Supercar also is unpractical
The only rule they had was that it had to be MORE practical than a supercar. Which it immediately is just by having big boot space.
Been really into these series now, having 2 Subarus myself and did exact same jobs you did byself without any experience was a 'cancer', but gained loads experience . Funny enough I had exact same exhaust blow lol. Keep the great work, this is true enthusiast stuff!
Man I started wondering if I would see this episode before doomsday
Yes I’ve been waiting for this for ages. One of the best CZcams series I’ve found, so glad I found your channel!
Awesome, definitely one of my favorite car related CZcams series I’ve seen in a while. Keep it up!
Love this series, thank you
Gotta agree with the other comments, I am really enjoying this series. You really don't need fancy editing or equipment to make a good video, just good connections and a good idea. You guys are really making something nice happen with all of these extra guys and involving yourselves so much. It's not like "we dropped it at the shop and they fixed it up for us", it's: "we got down and dirty for 2-3 days working on this, eventually we had to give it to the shop because it's just out of our expertise, but we did most of the work". Really adds a nice personal touch to it that makes me all the more invested. Plus bringing in experts to really give it a specialty touch, with Richard and Duncan being specialists in the field.
Loving this series. Hope to see more budget car modding like this in future.
This series is where it’s at!, keep it regular!
Nice! I was wondering about this build for a month or two, I’m glad you three are still making progress.
Now you can say blood, sweat and tears went into this build
MORE! I love this series :)
Loving the series! You are the new and improved top gear, but better in my humble opinion. Only wish I have is these were posted more often
More racing stripes! More vents!
Racing stripes tell the air where to go, for faster acceleration, and higher top speed! Each stripe = 3hp.
More vents = more cooling = more efficient = more fast. More vents also means more holes, making the car lighter!
Yesss, the Subaru is back!
Genuinely one of my favourite series done on CZcams, love a scooby 👍🏽
Richard is the man! Put so much effort. Should probably have gone for modifying a swift sport vs a standard subaru or something like that.
What a nice series! Keep them coming
I look forward to this series so much
Yay! Happy to see subie again!
More please... Fabulous series!!! 😁
Greatly enjoyed thanks guys.
I have been subbed since the first episode of this series and wow! It really shows how you don’t need much to make performance.
I’d also like to add a ❤ for Duncan!
Guys you been brilliant... even have the bell on I can't wait for the next episode
Duncan just has the type of face that says you can trust me that I will have this car make power. Love it. Perfect length on the vids lads keep it up!
Such a sick series please keep making more of these
Great job. The juxtaposition of the downs of spannering to the highs of spinning it up on the road says everything about why folks even bother in the 1st place.
Well done lads
The wrench knock-out gave me a good chuckle, thanks! 😂
Guys I'm loving this. Just discovered the channel and subscribing for sure!
Such a fantastic series
Another great episode thank you 👌👍
Perfect video length, really enjoyed it. Something is wrong with the sound, but I really love those videos
LETS GOOOOO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE FOR TWO MONTHS
Front splitter, rear diffuser, flat underbody (you should be able to make all of these with angle grinder and sheet of abs/aluminium)
I just stumbled across yr channel today its just like old top gear I love it😂
304!! Well done fellas! That has to be worth the injuries?
For future reference, to get the up pipe out, I unbolted my headers, and I took out the bolts that mounts the motor to the subframe, then jacked up the motor, should just slip out if you do it right. No need to unbolt the turbo
Best series on YT RN...Just wish the episodes were longer.
Dumping a bunch of dry ice on the sound deadening material on the floor will help break it up, hammer it to small bits before dumping it directly on the material and it will make chiseling it off much easier.
Would be great to see this challenge done with more cars, the more unusual (or unsuitable) the better.
I have been waiting for this episode for 2 months!!
Thats a very happy dyno to hit 300whp on a stock TD04. A VF34 maxes out at around 300hp
The editing makes it look like Will was initially slacking off and then gently coaxed into wrenching with a box of donuts next to the car lol
Sick I was waiting for our update on this car!
My love for the Subaru will never die the rumbles from the exhaust and whistles from the turbo are unmatched
Guys, i need you every week on CZcams with this wonderfull serie about the Impreza
If Richard weren’t around, you lads would be done for. I mean he fits a pipe that doesn’t fit, he does stand up comedy, he attends to medical emergencies. Multifaceted individual. Main character, no doubt about that
Loving the project car build series. So good pitting the lads against Scott
Best serie on youtube right now!
without beefed up Engine Parts, that Boxer will blow up
it should be fine they will only run it for a few laps on a small track, but yea long term surely
Stock turbo definitely stretched at 300. Duncan mapped my classic afew yrs back. Very good
Holy Moly!! Wasn’t expecting that much hp gain! Love it !!!
You guys are great keep it up
One of the best series on youtube.
Looking forward to the Aston Martin project car next 😄
First though, I'd love to see the lap time of this vs a stock STI with these tyres. Perhaps before the big turbo and intercooler though...
At least you'll have plenty experience when putting on that new larger turbo. My vf52 was a great upgrade for my outback XT looking forward to the next episode!
I spent more then 2k on my car so far in just performance parts. GDI 2.0t on e50 with aux fueling. Has 2 extra 42lbs injectors on throttle body that only spray under whatever throttle position I have them set up at. Helps keep my valves clean also.
Would be interesting to know how much more easily an expensive exhaust would fit and how much you'd save on man hours getting it in.
I'd much rather shell out double to avoid the hell they went through.
Swabbed 800€ exhaust into Legacy R and it took ~60 minutes with smoke breaks. It would have been faster if I had used a lift like they did in video.
Research into aftermarket parts you are going to install pays back massively, both in time and reduced headaches
when is the next one gonna come out-i cant stop watching this its so good
20+min Subaru vid, get the popcorn out
This whole series is like a wierd "mirror" of everything Ive done/plan to do with my black 5spd, 05 Saab 92x aero "Saabaru".. (wrx wagon). It already has a Cobb "stg 2" turbo-back exhaust & Access port tune. But I plan to set it up for AutoX/track driving as well. And just like them, my factory clutch is almost dead at 180k miles lol, I'm going to get the exact same BC coilovers, vinyl wrap it black, get new rims & tires, big brakes, upgraded cooling/oiling, possibly strip out some of the interior & extra sound-deadening (but not everything like them), and I also have an exhaust leak. There's several other things that are weirdly identical to them from earlier videos.. I can't remember all of it though. But awesome series getting to see this done on the same car as mine.. helps me decide what to buy🤘
This is my new Top Gear.
I'm a Subaru fan and owner so bias on this series and the KA off roader.
Cheers for the constantly fun and informative content. ✌️❤️🤘🤙🖖
Before even watching this I just want to say this is the most excited I've been for a video in a long time
I'd have probably gone with adding the bigger turbocharger per recommendation. That and possibly an upgraded drive shaft. Though, that's primarily because I get worried about throwing a rod due to excessive RPMs. 🤣💯
15:46 I actually called it. I was like it’s gonna be an exhaust leak. I also saw the smoke and was like that’s a lot more than normal 😂
Shout out to Duncan!
We need stripes for a 20 hp gain
The yellow devil looking powerful
"Give me oil in my subaru, keep me burning" gave me severe church kid flashbacks.
Richard is such a lad, helping with all your projects.
Spark Plugs: I'm reading that more expensive plugs are not higher performance, only longer lasting. The cheaper copper plug, or most expensive gold, are the best conducting and highest performance.
Yoo this is sick. I really want to see how you guys install the big turbo and intercooler. That might add another 100 horses.
Surprised you didn’t do a vf series STi turbo (not sure if yours comes with the td04 or not, in the USA it does) but we can find STi vf series in the USA used for 500-600 bucks, which would be a huge update.
Anyway. Love this series
Hmmm... Something seems off with that power number. I've never seen a wrx with the OEM td04l make over like 250whp. That Dyno must either read very high, or there's some corrections going on. You're lucky to make that power on an ej205 with a vf39 from an sti.
