You guys are absolutely killing it with this series - while the production value is fairly low its actually perfect for what it is - you guys are showing you don't need fancy this or that - you need good chaps with great chemistry and personality - and of course interesting petrolhead content!
Shame about the cheap exhaust. Should of bought a better unit which is would fit and work better. You had a big budget not the normal subaru owners one. 🙄
@Psychedelic Phlegm Riiiiight, sure they are. No clue what you're referring to but you do realize that one CZcams channel doesn't own an idea and that many channels do very similar videos and or ideas and it's in no way "ripping someone off", right? Actually from your comment no, no you don't understand that. Either way these guys are, in my opinion, MUCH more fun to watch than the Donut guys - nothing against them but they aren't at all my cup of tea and I suspect from the success of the channel and this series others agree. Demonetized for doing similar videos, wow, if that were remotely true most of CZcams would be demonetized. HAHA
I agree, I think also because this car is not too expensive they don't have to be very careful with it, they can trash it around. Plus the mods are closer to reality to us then let's say staging an Audi R8 and being " ohhh it's so fast I wish you can feel how fast it is ".
@Grounded My brain: Once you get past 50%, what is the car colour and what is the stripe? Keep adding stripes until you change the whole colour of the car. Like a wrap but made of stripes
I don't know, I really liked to see them sort of fumble around and figure things out. I feel like they brought in a Subaru Jedi Master when they called you.
This video perfectly sums up what it is like to work on a Subaru, a massive ball ache but worth it when all done! Good work guys, and still with £6k of the budget left!? Get a forged block, bigger turbo and FMIC and it will be a monster! By the way, I think the stock injectors were 440cc's
Forged block for 6k is a bit much. You could do rods, pistons and an sti vf34 turbo, not accounting for labour that should work. A ej207 sti engine can hold about 360hp (with stock turbo) with rods/pistons about 400. Depending on how different the wrx ej205 is anywhere between 360 and 400 is possible
Ребята, вы не представляете как я ждал новую серию. Для понимания, я загружаю эту серию с ужасным интернетом уже 15 минут и смотрю при помощи переводчика, но это всё ровно стоит того! С нетерпением жду новый выпуск!
Oh my gosh this is awesome! I'm so happy this series is continuing, and this is such a great episode. I can't wait to see the results next episode on the track 🤩🤩
Been really into these series now, having 2 Subarus myself and did exact same jobs you did byself without any experience was a 'cancer', but gained loads experience . Funny enough I had exact same exhaust blow lol. Keep the great work, this is true enthusiast stuff!
Anybody still remember how the car still had to be "practical"? I wonder how fast the Subaru would still be with your moving stuff in the back of the "van:?
You may have nearly 6k leftover, but if you counted in Richard's pay after this headache, then surely this project is over budget! 😅 Mechanics like him are priceless.
Just a thought but would an E85 tune be a cheap-ish way to increase power even more? I honestly don't know how expensive it is or if it's even possible with your Subaru but maybe it's something to look into. Also I'd bet you could dial the suspension in even more than it already is. Anyway I really like this series and very much enjoy the chemistry between the three of you (and shoutout to Richard too lol). Thanks guys!
They're in the UK which means you cannot get e85 at a petrol station. Also if they did they would probably need to go for a flex fuel setup to ensure they weren't just limited to e85 alone. There are more cost affective methods of making power when you consider these things.
I almost wonder if it will be something accessible with the turbo and front mount. But it is meant to be practical, maybe E85 would make it unpractical given the access to the fuel itself
The uel headers also reduce power too believe it or now. Hence the na ej's came with el headers to try and get a bit more out of them. Also the reason when races they have el headers
No. The "burbley" ones have an asymmetrical exhaust system. The latest series of FA engines have a matched exhaust system and they don't have anywhere near the characteristics of the old engine (some even have CVT fitted 🤯)
Wow, that dyno reads REALLY high. I've never seen a stock td94 subaru make more than 165whp on multiple local dynos. 2002-2005 cars are usually right at 150-155whp, the 2.5 liter cars push 160 stock, with more torque. Over 300 on stock turbo, catted up pipe, tgv valves, stock intercooler, stock inlet pipe... thats absolutely bullshit. that wouldn't make more than 190whp if you're lucky on our dynos here. Maybe break 100mph in the quarter if you are lucky. Those mods aren't really big power adders, even with tune.
Gotta agree with the other comments, I am really enjoying this series. You really don't need fancy editing or equipment to make a good video, just good connections and a good idea. You guys are really making something nice happen with all of these extra guys and involving yourselves so much. It's not like "we dropped it at the shop and they fixed it up for us", it's: "we got down and dirty for 2-3 days working on this, eventually we had to give it to the shop because it's just out of our expertise, but we did most of the work". Really adds a nice personal touch to it that makes me all the more invested. Plus bringing in experts to really give it a specialty touch, with Richard and Duncan being specialists in the field.
Awesome, my favourite episode so far. I kinda hope that you don't QUITE beat the Lambo, so big turbo and intercooler gets done. It's actually turning into quite a car!
Hmmm... Something seems off with that power number. I've never seen a wrx with the OEM td04l make over like 250whp. That Dyno must either read very high, or there's some corrections going on. You're lucky to make that power on an ej205 with a vf39 from an sti.
11:49 is very relatable, as is 12:25 Whatever you all pay Richard, it isn't enough 😂 Love the series! It actually brought me to the channel. Love how relatable the content and the hosts are!
Just fyi for anyone wanting the most performance for the money...its almost always a bigger turbo, and as minimal supporting mods as possible. Stock location turbo, catless parts that mate with oem exhausts, bigger injectors, flash tuned. Always will beat out full bolt ons and stock turbo.

Absolute trash, a complete waste of time and metal, and a valuable lesson learned.
At least you'll have plenty experience when putting on that new larger turbo. My vf52 was a great upgrade for my outback XT looking forward to the next episode!
I spent more then 2k on my car so far in just performance parts. GDI 2.0t on e50 with aux fueling. Has 2 extra 42lbs injectors on throttle body that only spray under whatever throttle position I have them set up at. Helps keep my valves clean also.
Little tip for next time... If you undid the engine mount nuts under the engine cradle, you would've been able to jack the engine up an inch on the offside to be able to get the turbo up-pipe out from underneath without needing to remove the turbo
Surprised you didn’t do a vf series STi turbo (not sure if yours comes with the td04 or not, in the USA it does) but we can find STi vf series in the USA used for 500-600 bucks, which would be a huge update. Anyway. Love this series
It's pretty wild how big of a bump in power you can get from bolt-ons and a tune. Modern turbo cars are pretty impressive. There was a time not long ago where to see that kind of gain, you had to go from NA to forced induction.
I must say, 20-30 minutes on these types of videos is the perfect length. 12-15 is a bit too short for me
"12-15 is a bit too short for me"
Thats what she said
It’s for algorithm reasons also time it takes to make content.
Totally agree
Yeah they are being lazy
@R/D You carry on telling yourself that.
@Psychedelic Phlegm apparently making a car fast on a small budget is exclusive to Donut Media. Lol ok buddy.
@Psychedelic Phlegm Riiiiight, sure they are. No clue what you're referring to but you do realize that one CZcams channel doesn't own an idea and that many channels do very similar videos and or ideas and it's in no way "ripping someone off", right? Demonetized for doing similar videos, wow, if that were remotely true most of CZcams would be demonetized. HAHA
They just need to carry on ripping off DONUT MEDIA until they get demonetized
Nothing beats watching car guys having a bad day then ended up with great results. I want this on a box set!
These are always the kind of car videos I enjoy the most, not the supercars and the fancy shit, but the relatable stuff
@Cleonze Nasro exactly, we can actually do the same things to our cars it just feels familiar
I agree, I think also because this car is not too expensive they don't have to be very careful with it, they can trash it around. Plus the mods are closer to reality to us then let's say staging an Audi R8 and being " ohhh it's so fast I wish you can feel how fast it is ".
WRX was a great selection for this series! Great aftermarket support for cheap mods. Keep it up!
@Constantine Gaskey how? Modding cars on a budget is a tale as old as time
they copied donut media don’t support these guys
@b.w.93 yea but then u start to forget all the annoyances as soon as u start driving
The mods are cheap, but some things can take so much more time because the boxer configuration
Wonder how much go faster stripes would affect the performance
@Schrodingers other cat stickerbomb, really.
Stripebomb...🤔🤔
@Grounded My brain: Once you get past 50%, what is the car colour and what is the stripe? Keep adding stripes until you change the whole colour of the car. Like a wrap but made of stripes
They don't actually affect performance on ther Hannibal side... They make cars more arrow dynamic...
The gains would be cancelled out by carrying the extra weight 🤷
42
I've been loving this Subaru build series!
Bigger turbo and intercooler imo and Go more hard-core with the weight saving
Dyno and suspension setup will gain so much time.
@Jonathan Philips are those worth it on the 15+?
Needs Anti Lift Kit control arm bushings. Pretty cheap too
Was thinking that too - a proper corner balance and track focused setup should gain at least 1-2 seconds with a capable driver, which they have.
Great result guys and great to meet you both 👍😎
I don't know, I really liked to see them sort of fumble around and figure things out. I feel like they brought in a Subaru Jedi Master when they called you.
@David Andrews awesome David 👌
Mine is one of those blobeye wrx making 303 on a td04, you mapped it last year and still going strong
Thanks for the tune! Just gotta beat that Lambo now! Callum
I would be very excited to see a turbo and intercooler for big gains!
Subaru are the easiest vehicles to work on
Forged block for 6k is a bit much. You could do rods, pistons and an sti vf34 turbo, not accounting for labour that should work. A ej207 sti engine can hold about 360hp (with stock turbo) with rods/pistons about 400. Depending on how different the wrx ej205 is anywhere between 360 and 400 is possible
Would be great to see this challenge done with more cars, the more unusual (or unsuitable) the better.
That is amazing! I expected a 30-40 hp gain but holy crap did I underestimate. Thank you guys so much for this content btw, the chemistry's great!
you make 40hp on a totally stock motor with just a tune, with way faster spool up.

I was wondering about that exhaust! I paid $1500 for mine on the e30, I thought, how on earth, $380??? Riiiiiiiiiight, it's crap.
Loving this series. Hope to see more budget car modding like this in future.

The only rule they had was that it had to be MORE practical than a supercar. Which it immediately is just by having big boot space.
Supercar also is unpractical
Smh they back peddled us.
You may have nearly 6k leftover, but if you counted in Richard's pay after this headache, then surely this project is over budget! 😅 Mechanics like him are priceless.

Before even watching this I just want to say this is the most excited I've been for a video in a long time
I thought that a big part of Subarus weird soundtrack is its Boxer engine? They always have an odd burble to them don't they?
The uel headers also reduce power too believe it or now. Hence the na ej's came with el headers to try and get a bit more out of them. Also the reason when races they have el headers

Easy 350hp to 400hp with front mount intercooler bigger turbo and exhaust, Walbro 255fuel pump, injectors and remap then your sorted boys.
Shoulda done a down pipe at least though
A decent top mount would be better for this, they’re not chasing high numbers just a fast car
Dont forget to do that weight reduction V2. At least off camera :D
when is the next one gonna come out-i cant stop watching this its so good
Vent mounts are great, unless you need the heating on, you know heating up your phone while charging it …

Callum rapidly blasting F bombs had me with the dumbest cheek to cheek smile

That’s pretty good a stock STI makes about 250whp
This is UK so was measured at wheels and then calculated to bhp. Still power more than STI from same period, but more like 20bhp rather than 50whp.
Are they running the stock 5 speed? I thought these can't handle that much power
Exactly my first thought. You already had the turbo off.... TWICE. CHANGE IT!
I bought that exact exhaust and spend more money on modifying it 😅
14:56 Please use protective equipment, show must go on safely :)
I swear every single build ever just ends up with a big spinny boi slapped on it for an easy 100hp
You can tell that guy really loves Subaru's
If that exhaust was from Gravity Performance on eBay, then I fell for the same rubbish. Bought one for my 330ci and I had to cut it up and forcibly bend bits to make it fit, and even then the hanger brackets weren't even in the same post code as the mounting points. Also on first start, it blew fibreglass dustings EVERYWHERE. Adding insult to injury, the stock exhaust sounded much better, too. Absolute trash, a complete waste of time and metal, and a valuable lesson learned.
stock is pretty much fine on these cars if its in good shape get nice high flow cat and muffler and its near as good any thing "custom"
need to strengthen the engine internals now. get it fully forged. then get a bigger turbo, pretty sure you could do that with 6k
The track is pretty small, better handling would do more good than more power i think
Those stock exhaust manifolds 🤢 easy power gains with good exhaust manifolds.
I've never felt more sorry for a car before, just buy a proper exhaust system that fits, would have saved you a hassle.
You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this video.
So they gave it more fuel, air, and less back pressure and it gained 100hp!?
At least you'll have plenty experience when putting on that new larger turbo. My vf52 was a great upgrade for my outback XT looking forward to the next episode!
ᴄᴏɴɢʀᴀᴛᴜʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ🎁ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ 👆..........
Need to do a sun roof delete! That’s a ton of weight up high that you can ditch in addition to all the sound deadening.
Should added a turbo like a vf35 or a tdo5 and 550cc injectors the 750cc are a bit overkill on a tdo4.
Definitely intercooler needed. And with those supporting mods you can easily go bigger turbo
I spent more then 2k on my car so far in just performance parts. GDI 2.0t on e50 with aux fueling. Has 2 extra 42lbs injectors on throttle body that only spray under whatever throttle position I have them set up at. Helps keep my valves clean also.

Surprised you didn’t do a vf series STi turbo (not sure if yours comes with the td04 or not, in the USA it does) but we can find STi vf series in the USA used for 500-600 bucks, which would be a huge update.

@OVERDRIVE So 304 was at the crank? Great videos by the way!
@OVERDRIVE what. It was on the rollers.
At the crank. For some reason that's how we do it in the UK. Callum
FYI, the normal way to remove the up pipe is to loosen the engine mounts and jack the engine up on one side to rotate it out the way.
Man if this Subaru doesn’t beat the Lambo, it’ll be the biggest let down of the century :(
