Wow. My dad sold cars in the late 50s and early 60s, and I now have about a dozen of those demo models.
AAAHHHH!!!! That JoHan smile looks like a monster coming after me!!! Christine on acid! 😜🤣
Hiya Max you got a big honorable mention from Andy. You getin around son.
@@warrenchambers4819 Great guy and I appreciate the shout out.
Really enjoy seeing these OLD kits Andy!! 👍
Thanks for sharing and keep em' coming!!! 🙂
Glad you like them!
@@AndysHobbyHeadquarters 👍🙂
I LOVE Max's Models! He actually lives about 15 miles away from me. Funny, laid back guy, pilot and mediocre modeler. And a Godzilla fan.
That's ME! 😜
@@maxsmodels damn-it, now after I saw this clip, I even regret more that I haven't buid the olds super 88 recently. 100 bucks was asked for it, and somehow, I thought it's just that olds, where they have done a re-issue, but nope it's really rare. I doubt I'll get another chance for it! It'a hard to find and it even looks very nice, very modern, for that time! Damn...Some opportunities you only have once in your lifetime, i guess. I hope not, I got to focus on positivity and it's all possible.
@@maxsmodels I'd love to see more vintage and/or really rare kits. Not pseudo rare, like something, you see a couple times a year. I mean really rare, like that olds super 88! Or the 61 cadillac fleetwood? Something around that time... Maybe even a 60's impala.
No computer aided machining back then. Those mold makers were skilled
They were working from factory blueprints supplied as part of the promo deal. If there are inaccuracies it's because OEMs made last-minute changes to things like emblems and what trim levels contained what equipment, after the promo model tooling dies were cut.
My local news agency had about 30 old jo-Han kits back in the 70s.I was doing a paper round with them and I told the boss I wanted them all.I had that 62 dodge as in the vid plus two later reboxes. The boss was happy to hold them for me cause he couldn’t move them.Everyone wanted Mustangs,55-6-7 Chevs,Corvettes and anything with a big motor in it.I sold a lot of papers
Neat!
Man! I miss my Jo-Han kits. I still have a few including my fav, the Chrysler Turbine car. A friend of mine gave it to me years ago, and I never built it because I didn't know how to mix the color for the body. Now, I know how to airbrush and I'm looking forward to building it someday.

I built and still build the Johan kits. Johan always manufactured unique automobile kits. Love all of them!!!
i kinda want to build some, but I'm still in the collector phase.
Thanks for the BLAST FROM THE PAST!
What you bought there is truly an Aladdin's Cave for modellers! Great to see this stuff and great videos!
Hey Andy those are cool
Wow!!!
Brings back memories
That is incredible model history
Thx Andy!!!
What a massive haul stash!!!!
Thank you for mentioning Max's Models.
I used to build models when I was a kid, late 60’s early 70’s, JO-HAN was my favorite. Recently went to a few local model car shows/swap meets, prices of
JO-HAN kits went to the moon and the promo cars very expensive too, just like the real thing prices went nuts.
Thanks Andy. Subbed to you as well and am enjoying catching up.
Awesome my boy Andy promoting my Uncle Max at Uncle Max's model awesome stuff
Thanks for doing this vid. So many of us have never seen these kits. Much less up close like this.
Big up Max, subscribed to him since long ago, hope to see you both discussing model companies at the beer cup some day.
Might happen
Johan was the only company to put out a 2 door version of the 1962 Dodge Dart, Revell put out a 4 door version of the car and then released as a funny car called Revellion
I remember building a bunch of those kits.
thank you for explaining about these old model kits!
Bunch of history in those boxes. I remember the "3 in 1" kits from the 1960/70s
Ah, yes. Been there; wish I was still there.
Sure enjoy how you and Luca Cee are sharing these discoveries of the early modeling era.
Awesome stuff Andy. Thank you for showing these to us.
I'm 67....those promo kits were free for sure at least until I stopped being a kid mid 60s and the funny thing is those decals are EXACTLY what were on our bicycles and local hot rods - those flames are hilarious - the shape brings back all the memories, the skull was on my front fender, only one missing is "Mr.Horsepower" that cigar chompin' angry bird - everybody had that bad boy. I wouldn't even put a blowdryer near that celluloid stuff but I wonder if you could "train" it back to shape in or with hot water? Too bad the late 50's Jo Hans don't RUST over the first couple years like the '57 Mopars did in real life within ONE year! We had a '57 Custom Suburban Plymouth with the bumper wings - sort of the wagon Christine and that was rusting on top fenders after ONE Chicago winter. These are good little time machines for we boomer boys. I often wonder who exactly throws the many many friction motor promos and the many models I had over the years away - I certainly didn't chuck 'em!! Hmmmm 🚗
Awesome thank you for sharing your vintage kits. Alot of people dont get to see this stuff
awesome stuff
Love them old kits thank you Andy
Awesome vid Andy!
As someone who has been spoiled by modern plastic model technology, I could never imagine building these. But it was fascinating to see; and in such great condition too! Crazy how far it has come in 60 years...
well, if you ask me, some of the older kits were even more detailed and better to cut. like the 70s monogram kits were great, and plastic goes like it's butter. Some chinese issues from today have some plastic which is hard to cut, at least harder as the one i mentioned. Also some lines weren't as sharp and the chrome looks really corny.
Awesome video thank you for bringing these kit to the light of day, model kits have come a long way from their humble beginnings, and one thing to note I didn't realize that Jo Han models hailed out of Detroit👍.
Thank you for uploading this.
I love those vintage models.
They have an special karisma😎
Yes they do, thanks for watching.
I too have a 59 Oldsmobile promo only mine is a two tone blue over beige with Bing Crosby's signature on the roof. It has no friction motor, the right front fender is chipped but not too bad and it too has the Johan smile.
Johan vid is a very interesting story thanks for sharing the kits
Nice build, pretty nice kits 👍👍
Beautiful models for that age!
Yes they are!
Johan and
Really Cool Video!!! Thanks for sharing
These are beautiful pieces
Love this channel keep up the great work I would to visit your store all kinds of neat stuff
i remember the Jo Han Desotos and Cadilacs especially the Cad Hearse Ambulance I made into a dragster. I hope you have some.
Brilliant
I noticed the box advertised the 62 f-85 convertible. I have not seen that kit before.
I built a lot of models when I was a kid. I would then blow them up with fire crackers. My mom thought there was something seriously wrong with me. Only a few models survived my childhood.
4:20 makes me wanna cry, cause I slept on a mint 62 olds super 88 kit from johan for only 100.-!
Awesome, MORE PLZZZZZ
I’d love to buy the 62’ Dart, amazing (I’m slightly older than the kit).
Why would you buy such a old kit with bad fit and quality?
I love the old Johan kits and promos, X-EL Products used to deal with a lot of the Johan kits and promos, great company! The last time I had gotten anything from them was in 1997 , and it wasn’t too much longer after that they closed down or something, what a shame too! X-EL was in Romeo, Michigan, they were a division of SeVille enterprises, well at least they were in 1992, but their location stayed the same. Anyways, very cool stuff Andy!
Neat stuff. Suggest you wear the white gloves. Skin oils might cause damage.
Triang in the UK used acetate plastic on there model railway models in the 1950s it warped the same.
Sheesh, Jo-Han from 1962 better detail than the MPC Country Charger I just bought lol
Three different versions from 1 box. I feel like from most manufacturers nowadays there would be 3 different versions in 3 different boxes. For example the recent Takom M60 video, first an M60, then an M60 with ERA and now an M60 with ERA and a bulldozer blade.
Good point.
Cool model car history lesson, Andy! I wonder how long it took the cellulose acetate promo models to potato chip like that.
Did I see a record player shown on the instruction sheet for the Dart? Way cool!
Yep saw it as well
Interesting
I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!
Great stuff
I remember that time...louvers and continental kits were normal "custom " features. I always called them Yohan... but I don't know if thats right. The AMT 36 ford was the 4th of their old cars.. the 32 and 40 ford (Sedan and Coupe) and it was molded in Gray the others in black.I really liked that 36.
It’s JOE-Han, guy who started the company was JOhn HANley
Funny, I worked on a Cessna twin for a couple of guys out at Scottsdale air park in the 90s. One of the owners of the airplane had a bunch of the promos, in the boxes, if I remember right. He had some of the molds, too, and I did a little work for him part time at an industrial park in Tempe setting up a shop to use those molds. Haven’t thought about that in years. I wonder what ever happened with that situation, whether he ever got that up and running. You’re dredging up memories you couldn’t have imagined, Andy.
Anyone watching in the Phoenix area know of any Jo Han kit molding ever going on around there?
Make some copies of the literature.
Good idea
Will we see this museum when you get it built.
Couldn't the promotional car be straightened out with a little heat so it doesn't warp further?
Your finding some right buried treasure Andy.
Interesting additions to the model kit museum, I rather like that '62 Dodge Dart but sadly no way I can have one to build unless there is a modern day offering of said car.
Those might be worth holding on to ....at least half..... The others sell for e bay prices ... getting it from you at e bay prices is a deal because they know its good
Andy have you thought about talking to 2nd chance (I think is their name lol) And see if they want to maybe scan some of these kits and maybe reproduce them??
Lots of this kits were reproduced over the years, this are unique because they are old but not necessary only kits on market.
Hve you thought about assembling any of the less rare sets?
Alright Andy your car model collection purchase fired up the old build interest for a car model. Thats a huge compliment by the way. Let me tell ya why. I'm an auto mechanic! You know how hard it is to get a 32yr grease monkey to WANT to work on a car in their free time????????
Great stuff! Would you print the name of the website re early scale modelling production?
Sweeto!!! You gonna build em?
I wonder if there is a way to straighten out the body when it has went all smiley?
Awesome, looking forward to seeing these someday. Do you know if there were any benefits to using cellulose acetate?
Cellulose acetate and nitrate were early plastics that were very cheap to mass-produce consumer items from. Everything from movie film to billiard balls to guitar picks and decorative moldings were made from them. They were however not as durable as other plastics like polystyrene (and slowly outgassed nitric acid and vinegar-ish fumes!) so styrene started taking over in roughly the early 50s for a lot of items.
The 62 Dodge Dart is re-issued from jo-han as u know, would be interresting to see one who isn't.
Where I found this clip, where some of your friend comparing vintage kits with new ones? Thank you very much for ur answer!
I learned how to drive on a 62 dodge dart my dad owned 😀
I learned how to drive in a 62 Plymouth V8 three on the tree fun car 😃
Andy, any chance you might pick one of these kits and build it?
When you mention videos or channels please leave a link :)
What the beet tank model that you would recommend
I'm actually surprised by the small amount of flash on these old model's sprues.
Has anyone got his old molds ,they are great kits .
Ohh and as far as military stuff goes what about special forces like navy seals and ect?
Question, did Johan ever make a kit for a stock matador coupe? Or dealer promo?
Hey Andy could you possibly ask some of your contacts ( making models) if they could make more first responder stuff like more and different fire trucks live to see tankers , pumpers, engines, brush trucks , ladder trucks , rescue trucks. And of course tools and people and diaromas stuff like in fire fighting , police and ems? Also would love to do wildland and aircraft stuff for wild land
Oh I forgot accories ik I misspelled it
They would make a killing money wise
Did jo-han make the Delta 88 model kit?
Do these kits have more value as an unmade one or as a built one with the box retained?
Usually unmade kits have a higher value
Nice video, Andy!
Can you write the name of the other channel you've referred to in this video? I have tried to search for what I have understood, but could not find it... Thanks in advance!
Max's Models, search youtube for him. He has a series where he looks at the history of different companies. Jo-Han was one of them, its very interesting.
@@orbitalair2103 Thanks!
I have actually searched it correctly, then. Tough I could not find the channel when searching on my laptop, I just did it now on the smartphone... Crazy YT!
How much was the whole collection?
Do. They have a 59 olds 98 like yOu showed in the reissued one like the 58 olds you showed in the beginning? I live in Tucson and I too just moved here from San Diego
I think the only full-size Oldsmobiles that Jo-Han released through X-El Products were the ‘56, ‘57, and ‘58. Hopefully, someone else will respond if I’m incorrect.
I bet it's pronounced YO-HAN.......Great vids ANDY.....
Company founder was John Hanley so it’s JOE-Han.
Are any of the kits going to be for sale ? I saw a Johan AMX I need (you have at least 5 , I think one was started . Where are you located and how can I contact you ? I'm also very knowledgeable on the vintage kits , I started building them in 1963 . One last thing , I've had real good luck getting the war page out of the acetate plastic , I take them apart and boil water , boiling the plastic will make them soft and they can be shaped back to original , for the most part .
Did you get any vintage old military models with your new collection
He's only shown automotive stuff. I don't think there was any military.
Lol Andy the name isn't Swedish lol It's his two names combined think of it as being spelled as Joe Han (not Hon). Small detail great video of these regardless. Remember these kits having that JoHan smile after awhile, really they were crap until later then just as they started getting good they went bust.
Did jo-han make 1975 delta 88 model.
When I searce for Maxis Models i find nothing. Can you poste a Link!
Greetings from Germany
Thank you

It seems to me that these promo models are a typical American thing, I don't recall seeing any in Europe. Where instead they would rather promote cars with diecasts or model kits.
1 st
Hi Andy and everyone, just a question, afv club has a searchlight kit, I was thinking of adding it to my diorama, but it doesn't come with a generator, any ideas please?
A suggestion Andy: please wear gloves because the oils in your hand can damage the kit and paper.
Hey Andy... watching your videos have been very enjoyable dot-dot-dot but I don't understand why you won't sell them? Cuz eventually you're going to pass away and you can't take them with you everybody knows that you're sitting on a small fortune sell them I passed the money ask your children I don't know if you have any but other people do... if the model Community is one big family share the wealth because always remember buddy you can't take it with you
Andy, you should be wearing white gloves, dealing with history here...
