- Matthew Rushin is a gifted individual who loves life, music, and most of all, his family and friends. Matthew also happens to be autistic. In 2017 he was in a car accident that hospitalized him leaving with a traumatic brain injury and a pituitary cyst. In spite of his injury and the inhibition of being autistic, Mattew continued to excel in his music, poetry and spread love to all his friends and family. Nothing could hold Matthew back. But one rainy night on January 4th, 2019 changed lives forever. Matthew was involved in a vehicle accident that would potentially put Matthew behind bars for 50 years. This is his story told by his mom, Lavern Rushin accompanied by her daughter and Matthew's sister Briauana Rushin. Dominique Wilkins and Lloyd Pierce from the Atlanta Hawks discuss the story with Lavern and Briauna and are actively doing everything they can to help with Matthew's case. I could listen to Matthew play the piano or the viola for hours! I pray that he is home soon, out of this nightmare - back with his family and friends. Free to do those things that are important to him, to light up the lives of those around him.
You know who I pray for? The man that he left disabled for the rest of his life, by intentionally trying to kill himself by driving his car into George Cusick’s car with 0 regard for his or his wife’s life . It’s a disgrace that they’re hailing this kid as a martyr, he should’ve never seen the light of day for 50 years.

My heart goes out to you Ms. Rushin. I can relate to you having a hard time letting him go into the world to be independent . So many think autism is a fade, fake, or you grow out of it and that isn't true. Many nights I cried with nervousness until I heard my son coming through the door from working at night. My prayers and thoughts go out to you.

I feel so sorry that happened to him and I also have autism and he should not have been put behind bars and I hope this will be good to help him get out of prison
Matthew needs to be home with his family. He has a disability and made a mistake that in no way warrants jail time. He does not deserve this sentence. Please donate money and sign his petition. Black autistic lives matter.
I feel so bad for him and the person injured. He shouldn’t have been allowed to drive because of the seizures.

Matthew deserves to sit in prison and serve his sentence...just like all the other inmates that are currently incarcerated that suffer from the same conditions as him. This video makes me sick.
