- Step by step I'll teach you how to make a beautiful champagne, wine or any other bottle, perfect for a special occasion. It's tempting to breeze through the initial prep and priming parts of the tutorial, (who wouldn't love to skip the boring stuff) but I've found that is the most important and most difficult part to get down. Once you have that down, I share some great decoupage tips to help make your projects look more polished and professional. As always, thanks for subscribing and sharing the projects you make. Happy Crafting.

Thanks so much 😊
Thank this newbie can’t wait to try it!
Love this! It's such a fun craft!
thank you for sharing your talent!!!
My pleasure!!
Always loved you stuff❤
Thanks so much 😊
So clever!! I have seen them painted before, but this seems much easier. Thank you for sharing!
I don't have the artistic talent to paint them, so this was the perfect alternative.
Thank you for sharing your talents in such a precise manner. Your product and tool suggestions are so helpful too. I’ve tackled oyster shells and pumpkins and am ready to take on a wine bottle!
I love this ❤️
You are terrific teacher. Thank you for this fabulous project tutorial. 🎉
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words.
I love this!!! I hope you do more
I'm planning a few in the coming month! Thanks for the encouragement.
I love these so much! Just subscrbed to learn more!! What a great NYE gift!
Thanks for subbing!
so fantastic!!! Just watched your tutorial with Champagne bottle. So excited to follow you and learn more!!! Wonderful teacher! Thank you.
Thanks so much 😊
Great video.
Thanks so much
Planning on doing these in blue and white for my sister’s wedding shower. Thank you so much! This is actually easier than what I thought people were doing. I thought they were all hand painted, which I was intimidated by, but I can definitely do this for her special day ❤
I'm so glad! Many are hand painted but I have zero skills in that area.
I've done a few blue and white and they have been lovely!
Yeah, finally found it. Thanks
So glad!
Yeah, I finally did my first bottle... Posted on our FB. Still learning more.
Lovely
Thanks so much 😊
Awesome
Thanks!
Stunning!!! I feel confident enough now to try a bottle for myself. Would love to know where you purchased those beautiful tiger 🐅 napkins.
I am so sorry I missed responding to your lovely note! The brand on the napkins is Caspari. I believe the name of the napkin is Wild Christmas and it can be found on their website or Amazon.
You can put a little baby powder on the painter’s tape to make it less sticky.
I have a tendency to get it all over when I try that on these projects but great tip to share.
Loved your video - will be trying this weekend! Can you please link your supply list (eater color pens, varnish, precut painters tape etc) thank you!
I am working on links, not sure you'd have by this weekend but will be able to work on at the end of the week.
Amazing video! After finishing a bottle, is it possible to add a layered effect like dried florals with mod podge? I’ve seen that done separately but I think it would look really cool on top.
Thanks so much and absolutely!
Stunning. Do you have a link for the napkins?
Entertaining with Caspari Luncheon Napkins, Wild Christmas, Ivory, Pack of 20 a.co/d/80ZQaCj
These are the luncheon napkins. The cocktail napkin animals are smaller but they work as well!
This is awesome! Do you thin out the varnish glue?
I don't. That's why I like the standard gloss. I use three coats if I want it to feel high gloss. I do use the high gloss but it is much thicker and prone to drips.
Just started doing these as gifts! Absolutely love them. I was using acrylic white paint as the base and tried the chalk paint after watching your video and it didn’t dry faster than the acrylic.
In your opinion do the napkins crease less on chalk paint than they do on acrylic paint?
I’m trying to still get that flawless look with no creases in the napkins.
In my experience it dries faster and with a more even finish. I like the coverage I get with chalk paint, but whatever works best for you is always the ideal project! I think the flawless finish comes from multiple variables though.
Great video! Do you have a link to the water pen you recommend?
I think this is it or similar. Thanks for the kind words 🙂 www.michaels.com/product/10539290
Hi! My first time seeing this type of art ❤️❤️❤️ and I love it! I can’t wait to start my new projects !! Thanks for sharing your talent!
I just have one question 🙋♀️ how do you keep your brushes clean and not sticky?
I keep a mason jar with a little bit of dawn in it on my work station. (Water low enough to just soak the bristles) between uses on a project, I drop it in, then wipe when I move to the next coat. Then no hardening left in the air for even five minutes. Ideally I try to clean with dawn (or a paintbrush soap bar I have) to give a deep clean every couple of days. But I would do it right after a project is complete if you are only occasionally using. Wrapping it in Saran Wrap tightly between uses works as well (I do that with a paint brush) By that I mean between uses in same day/project. Hope that helps!
@@craftingwithgretchen thanks again ☺️☺️☺️
This was so well done! I’m excited to try! Do you have a supply list posted somewhere?
I finally figured out how to post the links to my favorites in the description, hope it is helpful!
And thanks for the kind words 😊.
I had to use normal white bc they were out of cottage you can still see outline some after done is that because of the color or will you always seem it down?
Hmmm...that might be the case. If the background is much lighter than the base color of the napkin you can see it a bit. If you've when torn the tissue or using the water brush it helps but the color difference can still be obvious. If there are only small areas, sometimes I'll use a little of the background color to bridge the gap. Some seem to fade more with a few top coats. The last thing I'll say is that often, I'll notice all the little errors and details but others can't even see what I'm seeing.
Beautiful. What type if varnish do you use?
amzn.to/3xCf8x2
This is my favorite!
Thank you so much for the AMAZING tips. Absolutely beautiful! When putting the designs on the bottle are you using the varnish gloss or mod podge? It looks like you were using the varnish before the designs then putting them on then let them dry and then for the final coat varnish/gloss again?
I'm so sorry I'm just now seeing this, I was traveling. Yes, I just use the same varnish for the base, and I find that it really helps make them even more polished!
Thanks for your kind words!!
Thank you 😊
Could you still do this but skip the white paint step and skip to applying the napkins straight onto the bottle instead? I have a scotch bottle I want to do this to but I want to still be able to see through the bottle.. would you clear coat over the whole bottle or carefully apply the mod podge over just the decoration?
You absolutely can, the only thing to know is it is shocking how hard it is to get a napkin to show through. But it could absolutely look fabulous with just a slight pattern/image on bottle!
Actually one more question, may be dumb: can you use all portions of napkins like even the outer part that’s ridged if that makes sense?
Yes, but I do find that part of the napkin tends to wrinkle more so just be aware of that 😊
Hi Gretchen! Have you ever used printer paper and not napkins? I want to transfer photos to the bottle and before I screw it up wanted to ask an expert! Thank you for the video. So glad I found this before I jump in. You are my first follow ever!
Hi there! I've printed on napkin and decoupaged that which works really well once you iron out the kinks. I've decoupaged origami paper, and while it works, it just gives a very different look/feel. I have yet to print a photo on tissue. One tip for sure is to test varnish on printed photo first and allow paper to sit long enough for ink to dry. 😊
PS thanks for the follow 😊
A little warning : I did this with cheaper champagne and in testing the label tore when I tried to remove. So I had to hand paint and carefully paint around the label. Finished it with clear acrylic spray after decoupaging the napkin pieces on.
Yes I mention the cheaper label ripping but thanks, didn't mention the repair. I used acrylic paint the color of the label as it's never been a very large section. Thanks for mentioning!
@@craftingwithgretchen the one I tried ripped a lot. But just glued it down and went on. Thank you for the tutorial!
Could you apply napkins to a bourbon bottle without paint ? Does this work or you have to use the paint ot help with blending?
It is likely you won't see the napkin without the priming coat.
Also how long do you wait for the paint to dry in between layers and before applying the napkins? Thank you!!! Doing tomorrow so I appreciate the info on these two comments
So sorry I'm just now seeing this. I put the fan on them, and with chalk paint it doesn't take long to dry at all! Ideally I can do all priming one day but prefer to allow it to sit overnight before I do the decoupaging just to make sure it dries fully.
@@craftingwithgretchen And what is your timing for applying the gloss all over the whole bottle? How long do you wait after the initial placement of it all
last thing- how long do you wait before applying the all over gloss? and then how long before a final coat
It depends, if using DuraClear takes less time to dry than mod Podge. I wait only like an hour after napkins before first gloss coat, then a couple hours at least in between coats. Then at minimum 24 (I prefer 48) before use to make sure it has fully cured.
What was the beautiful napkin manufacturer? Like to purchase them.
They are by Caspari. That size is the luncheon napkin. It is called Wild Christmas.
What kind of napkins do you source for the art?
I use mostly Caspari napkins. I use some IHR, Serena and Lilly, WH Hostess and Hester and Cook as well.
I am curious if... i have seen some great tissue paper with stars... have you ever used it on bottles.
Yes I have. I've had some issues with tissue that has a wax coating (in tends to show creases on rounded objects). But tissue works great!
Great Video. Where can We find links to the items
I haven't set up Links but can. My daughter is coming home for winter break today so will do that once she is settled. 😊
Where did you find the painters tape sheets

This is the link 😊
Gretchen, what is the brand of gloss you use?
amzn.to/3vcH3CP
This is my favorite!
How do I prevent the label from ripping when taking off the label? It happens so often. Thank you
Hmmm..I don't have it that often. You mean when taking off the painters tape? Sometimes it is because of the specific label, some seem more fragile. Some tapes are more sticky. The few times I've had it happen I use paint to fill it in to cover the rip.
Can you please share the name of the napkins and lacquer? Thank you!
Caspari napkins (Wild Christmas) and DuraClear Gloss varnish. 😊
Used a roller but it is splotchy and rough. What type of paint roller did you use?
Hopefully our messaging helped with this!
@@craftingwithgretchen i'm having this problem as well. alcohol cleaned bottle, and super dry but after the paint the roller is looking a bit rough....
It's hard to say without seeing, but my first thought, if I'm understanding your comment is to watch how much paint you put in the pan and get on the roller. If I use a foam roller and don't put too much on, it doesn't have any texture at all. In the future, if you have put several coats on you can sand that outer layer. The best thing I have found to do that is the buffing blocks for nails. amzn.to/4bheX9E
do you have a link to the brush you use?
I need to set them all up but here is one I love I get online from Michael's. www.michaels.com/product/10329396
When I go to do my all over first gloss cover my napkin always gets wrinkly then when it was fine before. Am I doing something wrong?
Sounds like you are not letting it dry in between? The napkin wrinkles when it's over saturated. Hard to say absolutely, but would be my guess.
What paint roller and paint do you use?
I'm trying to work with links but having issues! amzn.to/493D2ii
This is the roller!
Silly question, but can these go in ice after its done?
I chilled this bottle in the fridge for about 10 hours and had it on ice for about an hour while we enjoied it. Success, the design was not altered in any way. I'll add the caveat that I didn't use any Mod Podge when making this, and every label is unique in how it will respond to water.
Wont let me link the photo but the bottle was unchanged.
