    Coloring is such an ambiguous process. I've known a lot of "colorists" who have all the technical skill to manipulate the software, but lack the artistic taste to create something pleasing on their own. I think having a good "look book" or style guide to inform the coloring process is often overlooked.

    My takeaway: crushing the blacks allows you to have a rich image without having to crank the contrast and lose detail. Also starting with a beautiful clip doesn’t hurt 😂 Thanks for this!

  • @jvke.p
    @jvke.p Před 3 lety +46

    As a professional colorist, there is NOTHING wrong with keeping it simple. I would encourage you to try working in clog tho! It’s really one of the easiest log images to work with. Just add some contrast, play with your basic correction tools, and maybe even curves if you feel like it. Then drop another Lumetri effect on your adj. layer or clip, and you’re off to grading!

    • @jvke.p
      @jvke.p Před 3 lety +11

      P.S. you wouldn’t believe how often this is all that’s done to color big budget projects. It’s not about complexity, it’s about enhancing the story. Excellent work.

    This is one of the best videos I've seen on color grading. I think more filmmakers, especially beginners need to simplify their color grading.... unless you are trying to become a colorist. Keeping it simple usually means a cleaner image and it will help you to nail the beauty of the shot in camera, rather than rely on color grading in post. Thanks Danny!

When it came to the grade for your music video in the field, once the correction was done and you were on the wheels, i really wanted you to push a monochromatic palette by adding greens to the highlights. Especially after you said it was “otherworldly”. Think some of Utopia’s (BBC/Channel4) blue/green over saturated technicolor palettes for reference
