  • It's been three weeks since Jason underwent emergency brain surgery and two weeks since he came home from the hospital. With a few quiet moments to spare before a medication pick-up, I was able to sit down and give an update on what life is like for us and what the future holds.
We continue to be so thankful for all the prayers, love, light, support, kindness and encouragement being sent our way. We can't ever say thank you enough. It keeps our spirits lifted, even during the most trying of times.
Only four more weeks to go...

Abby, you are doing an amazing job keeping everything going and together. I listened to the latest podcast yesterday, I wasn't expecting any new episodes during this time but it was still a good episode, you did a great job.
While my personal experience is nowhere near Jason's, back in the mid-1990s I got bacterial pneumonia from dust!
I was on a call in the middle of a hot summer night in Barstow California, back during my career in Animal Control, handling an assist the Police call at a small house that had a small front porch with a dirt floor, and the dog captured on it. Wrestling with the large dog kicked up a lot of dust that I inhaled, not fun but I thought nothing of it.
A few days later I had a cough, a couple of weeks later I could hardly breathe and was out of breath just walking from a chair to the bathroom. As I was getting worse and not better, we went to the doctor and after tests, it was diagnosed I had pneumonia in my left lung and part of my right one.
I was off work for almost a month and the only thing that kept me from a hospital stay several weeks into it was when we were at the hospital due to me having so much trouble breathing, and I was given a giant shot I got in my butt! It saved my life I am certain!
It was a concoction of antibiotics and it felt like a brick was being injected but two days later I felt so much better and although slow, it was complete recovery with nothing like that ever since.
But, almost dying from inhaling dust! It still amazes me to think about it.
I sincerely hope for a complete recovery for Jason too. As I said, his is way worse than my anecdotal experience, but we can only hope for the best for you and your entire family! Life can change forever in a split-second, you have to adapt and fight on as you guys are doing!

Abby, keep at it girl! Be strong for Jason, and your kids. They need you to be strong, I'm sure you know that. It's hard, but keep faith and be tough, you can do it. Please consider creating a Patreon or Go Fund Me account. Let us know when it's set up, ready to donate. Put the info in the video description. We want to help.

Tom Spurlock, thanks! An RV Miles Facebook member put together a GoFundMe shortly after the surgery. We are so grateful to him and all who have donated. We’ve kept it off our socials, unless someone asks, because we don’t ever want to appear to be trying to gain from this life altering tragedy. To be honest, we’ve never navigated waters like this, and every ounce and type of support has meant the world to us. We will do all we can to pay all of this kindness forward. The link is below and thank you again for inquiring and offering words of support:

Abby, we've been where you are now, and I want to tell you to keep focusing on the positive, don't be afraid to tell those around you what you are going through each moment so they can support you guys and your kids. After you win this and get home, and life begins to return to normal, don't be afraid to let all the emotions out, whether it is with each other or with a mental health professional. You are carrying a huge weight and will be for quite a while. You will have to let it go once you are in the clear! Don't be afraid or ashamed to ask for help. We are all praying, contributing, and want to help however we can! ❤️ Keep steady and strong for now, and keep the faith!

It sounds like you're doing an amazing job taking care of everyone. Let yourself have those moments of sadness; it's okay to feel that way. Thinking of you and hoping for a quick recovery for Jason and strength for you and your family.

Abby, thank you for the update on Jason. It sounds like he is making progress, physically.
In 1996, I had a hysterectomy, which I got an infection from-peritonitis, which is deadly if not treated, think appendicitis- it’s the same bacteria. Two additional surgeries in 6 weeks, an open abdominal wound-from more infections and not able to be alone because I was too weak so I stayed with my sister and her family- someone was home all the time. It’s been 23 years and I’m living with the aftermath of the surgeries, the bacteria and the antibiotics.
The reason I tell you all that, is to say, I understand exactly where you’re at, both you and Jason.
It does become a mental battle.
I encourage you to both be open with each other- even stuff that is scary to talk about. It allows you both to be vulnerable and to know how to support each other.
Abby, when you get home and have physical support, try to allow yourself some time to allow yourself to just breathe, whatever that looks like to you.
Most importantly, love each other and communicate.
Keeping you, Jason and the boys in my prayers.
    Donna
