Bravo, Vincenzo is a brave man. One tip is to spread the blind testing over more days so the results are more consistent.
Vincenzo, you are becoming the Sommailier of olive oil! haha you should try Casa Juncal it is an excellent extra virgin olive oil, it won Gold at the 2021 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition. Also when tasting try using a sorbet to clean your palate.
I was going to say the same thing hahaha you beat me to it hahaha that is ok I like you both :) xxx
Would totally watch your blind taste test @ChefJamesMakinson of Olive oils available to you in Spain for reference
The best olive oil I ever had was when I was visiting my cousins in Italy and one of my cousins had just pressed olives. The olive oil wasn’t even an hour old. Nothing I have tried since then comes close to the taste, the smell and even the look of that olive oil.
I live in Greece so I am spoiled with amazing olive oils everywhere. However, a cousin of mine decided to try growing olives to make a very high quality olive oil and has a Chemistry background so went deep into how to create the most flavorful olive oil. Surprisingly, the process went against what most greek farmers were doing ( collecting olives when they are still green, processing them the same day they were collected etc). Oh my God, the taste of this olive oil is like nothing I ever had until then. Super complex, peppery but also bright, fruity but also earthy. It was out of this world. I was so spoiled. Unfortunately my cousin stopped producing it because he was struggling with the business aspect of this and now nothing compares to the taste of that olive oil.
@@hannibot maybe get someone like Vincenzo to invest in the cousin's business?
Scaling should cut costs
@@vincenzosplate my pleasure 😃 And thanks for creating videos to help us experience the joys of life - your videos helped prepare my brother for his trip to Rome a few months ago 😎
Drinking 12 cups of EVOO - *for science*
You have earned my respect🍷
Hahah thank you mate! The things that I do for you guys!! ❤ But I hope that at least you enjoyed this video 😊
"Colour doesn't matter guys" but at the end when Vinny compares the homemade to the second place brand in the plastic glasses, the first thing he does is compare the colour of the two....too funny 🤣...and then changing the ratings of specific brands afterwards was brutal...don't sell out Vinny
I've tasted Italian homemade olive oil and it's definitely great. However as a Portuguese I also love many of our brands.
But you know that over half italian brand arent really italian. They have the honor of being at the same time the 2nd biggest importer and exporter of the product. Lots of made in Italy olive oil comes from Iberia
@@jtduarte6829 I've never tried Portuguese Olive Oil because it's not available here, but between Italian and Spanish Olive Oil, I always get a good Spanish brand because it is superior to the Italian brands.
@@vincenzosplate I'll make a long list short😁
Picual Monterosa, Porca de Murça, Herdade de Esporão Bio, Gallo Reserva.
PS: Thank you for sharing recipes that always turn out delicious.
That looks very difficult to taste so many in one sitting. I enjoy your taste testing videos, and always learn something😊
It was difficult but at least I hope that this video was informative for you guys! 😊
Vincenzo you are so REAL! I like this test! Also ,you are so brave to upload this 👍
Thank you so much for the compliment mu friend! Makes me happy to hear that you enjoyed this video 😊
Vincenzo, really enjoying watching you getting drunk on olive oil. But where's the Greek olive oil Someone will definitely go nuts 😂
Keep enriching us with this awareness. Grazie Mille
I couldn't find any Greek brands for this video sadly! Maybe I will in a an other video 😊
@@vincenzosplate I was just joking, but this comes now as a surprise to me. The Greek community should be big in Australia, I believe...
Thank you so much for doing this! Now I know what to look out for at the store to get a good one. I never know which one to pick.
Oh, my dear man. All I could think of was that you were in for some after guzzling all of theat EVOO. Thank you for your sacrifice!
Lived in Sicily in the '80s and had a olive trees in my "orchard," which the neighbors, who harvested them, so kindly gave me bottles of. Never before and never after have I had REAL olive oil. 😩 $$$$ for anything close but I live in the US. Still, there are some good ones out there and some is better than none. Thank you for your service, sir. I can only imagine the ramifications.
This was worth it as long as you guys enjoyed the video and found it informative 😊
Chef Vincenzo, that was great! The only thing that I would recommend, is less bottles next time. You continue to keep Me watching for the next informative and heart felt video! Keep up the great work, Chef!
Since i discovered you ages back, not only do i veganize everything, i have learnt much Italian cooking and about pasta's and oils
Aw thank you so much for following along! Which of my recipes is your favorite? 😄
@@vincenzosplate i love the simplicity of aglio e olio and tastes great. cacio e pepe as well
This deffantenly needs a part two as there's so many olive oils left to try, I use to buy lucini but the stores stopped carrying it so I tried another brand from Italy and liked it enough I bought 5 bottles
I've been buying carapelli it's nice but there's better options still. I've had some reallly bad tasting olive oil some even tasted metallic
Another amazing blind folded taste test! Can whine be next please? 😂
It was interesting how your taste buds got number. Shows how strong extra virgin olive oil actually is. But it's interesting that you still recognized quality later on despite your numbness.
Love the video vincenzo love your content your a amazing CZcamsr I love watching your videos they are the greatest and the best and the coolest all thos extra virgin olive oil so good the monini would have to be my favourite but they all look so good
Thank you so much for all the love and support! It means a lot to me❤
A different take on shots to be fair😆Very entertaining and informative!
Probably few of those olive oils are not italians. It is very common they buy the olive oil to Spain or Greece and then they put the stamp of italian. If they dont put explicetly the origin region, i would suspect. That is why I usually buy Monini, which says it explicitly.
@@vincenzosplateBecause there is a lot of money involved. There isn't enough oil production in Italy to cover the demand. It is similar to some Rioja red wines in Spain. Some brands bring the grape from other locations.
It may not translate to other countries but Balsamic, cheese and prosciutto would be fun taste tests
Love your honesty in how difficult this was. Perhaps a blind brand test of pecorino romano cheeses?
I love the video, i kinda noticed the difference in the taste over years, but few months ago, a friend brought a homemade bottle from Greece and it was totally different thing, such rich flavour and not bitter like the store brands.
Enjoying the blindfolded taste testing series 🙌 helps to remove the price bias and really lets the nose and taste buds be the judge.
The only thing I would change is not setting the bottle down in front of you before pouring, giving you an idea of which bottle is which.
Ps last place was the one that wasn't set down before pour...others were tapped on the counter a couple of times, and some even had all 4 corners of their bottle tapped on the counter. As if you attempted a code...
My favourite EVOO that I had was the one I got from Malcesine at lake Garda. Sadly I lost one full bottle of it when it fell from the table in my kitchen. I had a few nice ones from my local stores here, but that one was just so fresh and delicious like none of those locally available ones here.
Dear Vinny,
Regarding oilve oil. I have a long story about my visit to Grace and trying a farmer olive oil there a local market.
However, long story short his recommendation was never buy your oilve oil when is kept in a glass bottle and always buy the canned one.
La Española is pretty much the best option you can easily find within Germany. It's pretty darn good! Bertolli is harsh and unpleasant but sadly it's usually the most common option people have.
I use either Moro Primero or La Española, depending on availability. I only started using La Española when one day I just couldn't resist the chica bonita on the picture 😇
It's a good oil though!
Hey Vincenzo, love your reactions and videos. I'm from Venezuela, we have a very important Italian community due to a big migration wave in the middle of the 20th century. For that reason, we are very familiar with authentic Italian dishes and of course some fusions with local ingredients. I wanted you to know we have a dish we called "Pasticho" that is basically a Bolognese lasagna (probably some fusion going on and some mistranslations happening as well). I'd love to see a reaction to that dish, you may find some venezuelan chefs preparing Pasticho in youtube, of course in Spanish XD. This is a very important dish in our culture, it's a big tradition to prepare it as a part of Christmas / new year celebrations.
I wish you had tried Partanna ! It is my absolutely my favorite and they even have different bottles for different uses. I highly recommend you giving it a try!
Love these blind tests! Would love to see pasta next. ❤❤❤
@@vincenzosplate I would love to see De Cecco, Rustichella d'Abruzzo, Gentile, Rummo (or Di Martino) and Mancini (or Cocco). In other words, a mix of commercial and artisanal. Thanks! ❤❤❤
I really enjoy Monini, I can't afford expensive oils but I find it very smooth and enjoyable, way better then the others I find in the same price range.
Please also test the German "ja! Natives Olivenöl". It is the most common olive oil in north Germany. I think it is really good and i always use it for my Bolognese. I would appreciate your opinion. 💖🥇
This was lovely. Very entertaining. I love taste tests.
The sadist in me finds it utterly hilarious to see someone drink half a liter oil too! How about taste testing different brands of liquid laxatives? LOL 😂😆
No greek olive oils though?
Good video!
I know it would be a lot more effort but would love to see you blind taste testing pasta brands that are readily available in Australia. The Olive Oil Mafia sold me some bad batches of Italian origin product of late so it was actually nice to see Cobram punching above it's weight on a blind taste test (but also for their regular supermarket grade product!)
Hey Vincenzo, I have an idea for this video. There’s twelve oils, so what I suggest is trying four oils on one day, four on a different day, and the last four on a different day again
And then take the best oils on all three days for the final taste test
Very nice test, but Greek olive oil is always the best. Simply because the best olives on earth are from Greece. Ever tried Kalamata olives? Purrrrrfect. Love your videos and recipes, Vincenzo!
I think the blind tests are great! Even if "Mutti" failed the last time. As a European, however, I definitely miss olive oil from Crete! For my taste one of the best. I buy it online from the producer in a 5 liter canister and I get by with it for about a year. Real top oils also come from Tuscany, but for a much higher price. But thanks for this beautiful clip!
What will you do with the olive oils which did not get a good score?
Thank you very much, Vincenzo, for sharing your taste testing video with us.
great video, it's awesome to see, that the blindfold does a lot in regards to expectations and that way enhances objective judgement.
As a natural prodduct, I'd also think, that it depends a lot on the batch and year.
Thanks for the insights.
@@vincenzosplate I do have a source of local olive oil from a colleague of mine. It's the best.

I've been tasting coffee extensively, and I suggest trying comparative tasting! Choosing the winner out of two in each round should be easier than giving a rating :)
Ive been an olive oil snob (very particular) for many years and visited the production facilities in Italy. But quality for the money is definitely COSTCO Italian extra virgin olive oil. It’s very high quality, and is always fresh, due to the high turnover.
how long the jar's been sitting on the store's shelf has to affect the quality.
I bought Golden kalamata Extra Virgine olive oil and will be tomorrow. Previous was THEONI EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL. 😋
There is store in poland that imports olive oil and olives from Greece.
And for several months of time I only buy oil and olives in this store.
😋😋😋😋😋😋
You want to know?
It’s very interesting watching you do this.
I’m really not surprised you found the home made oil best…immediately.
One negative comment: If you place any value in the blindfold test, you can’t then say you don’t care about it (and allow your bias to change your opinion).
Next video?
Tomatoes. Fresh, chopped with a knife, no seasoning. I want to know if Roman tomatoes (the long ones) are best.
Either raw or YOU make a sauce with them.
Would love to see a blind taste test for Balsamic Vinegars. Traditional in particular that you can easily purchase. I typically go to a specialty Olive Oil/Balsamic Vinegar store and purchase my products from there, but I would be interested to see how others rate.
These are a lot of fun to watch in my opinion. Maybe with the oil you could swish and spit like wine? Haha!
Vince, I cringed every time you took a drink after the 4th or 5th one. God bless you! I'm sure you ran straight to the bathroom after this. Lol
@@vincenzosplate The things you do for us, Indeed!!! 🤣 I 100% enjoyed it! I just felt so bad for your stomach!! Peace, my friend.
Hi Vincenzo, summer is just around the corner, how about a video about ‘riso freddo’ i've only eaten it once on holiday so far, i found it very tasty, ideal in such warm weather or on the beach. saluti Riccardo
Could you please tell us more about the Australian red island extra virgin olive oil- early harvest edition that is available now. Thank you very much.
If you decide to try this again, maybe you should organize the oils into a tournament bracket, so that you can take breaks between tasting pairs of oils without having to remember the flavors of previous oils. That is the same technique that James Hoffman uses when comparing many different coffees.
The best olive oil I ever tasted came from Spain. They were friends of ours and produced it themselves in fairly large amounts. They also sold cans of olives filled with fish paste. Unfortunately, they sold their business several years ago, and we haven't found an olive oil, that even comes close. It had a citric fresh note that was amazing, it even made a simple salad taste amazing.
I would love you to try gkazas from greece. They use a lot of marketing in the Netherlands but the quality tastes outstanding. They claim to be 100% Greece produce with only the best quality into their quantity's sold. I would recommend them even though they aren't Italian but because of them greece rocks the olive oil market in my opinion
Have you tried Greek or Turkish olive oils. Are a little bitter and taste a little acidic but I prefer them on salads and aperitives in favour of Italian one.
@@invoked5114 I buy Sotirelis and Physis at 5l for 78/80€ in România. Spanish one whe only have La Chinata for 46€/3l. It's probably a lot more mass produced but it still taste great.
I use monini classico, it is a great for a supermarket product. Happy it got a high score.
Same, I rotate between monini and la espanola (whatever brands on special) they’re my two supermarket favorites
Please, do another video where you try the Spanish, the Greek, Jordanian and The Saudi one. I bet it will be an experience. Go at random first but make sure it is grown at that country.
Hey i was wondering if you can make some rasta pasta but with your twist this dish i one of my favorite dishes ever
Hey Vincenzo, I would love to see you do another blindfold rating of the last few oils just to verify the scores
Really couldn't decide between risotto and Linguine puttanesca - so I made a risotto puttanesca. Soooo good!!!
I purposely bought Colavita based on your last video suggestion but ended up 5/10 this time😢😢 However, I really like the fragrance of it

My partner needs GF food and I have been trying brands here in Australia.

Hey there my friend! I will try to make a video for GF pasta options! Stay tuned 😊
Which one is a raw olive oil that is green and fresh that you know is raw in the United States. Which one should I get I just ran out of the raw one I buy from traderjoes every November it's novello and it's crazy good raw and it's once a year and has both dates and it's fresh but I just ran out now Which one should I buy if I'm in Arkansas I want a raw olive oil.
It will taste good as long as the olive 🫒 is fresh and preferably single origin.
Just brought a bottle of oil from Puglia, Italy yesterday as the Palestine ones are currently out of stock.
Repeat the EVOO blind fold test but only taste 4 at a time making sure the guy helping you doesn't let you know which you've tasted until you've end of test which could be over 2/3 days
Or take a rest for an hour between the sets of 4 or 5, and during the rest include a snack of with some bread and lean protein to absorb and settle the oil in his stomach.
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, it would have been smarter if I tried them in a span of several days 😅
Colavita and Bertolli are the only brands there I normally see in US supermarkets. Some of the others might be available in some specialty shops.
Try California Olive Ranch. It's pretty good bang for the buck. One advantage is that it's made in California, so if you are in the USA, it doesn't have to travel via a container ship
I enjoy your channel. Next time you do a taste test you may want to consider doing it in brackets. Compare the items within each bracket and pick the winner and then taste the winner of each bracket against each other. Do it over a couple days so you are fresh for each bracket.
@@vincenzosplate Take the 12 oils you just tasted and taste test 3 of them for the first bracket. Then declare the winner of the first 3 as the winner of that bracket. Do the same the following day with the next 3 oils. After 4 taste test you would have a final bracket of the 4 winners for the final taste test. This would allow your taste buds to stay fresh instead of trying to distinguish the flavor of 12 oils at once. Love your channel. You have brought my cooking skills to the next level!! Thanks for your content!!
Colavita was thrown under the bus a bit! For a grocery store olive oil, it is one of the fanciest ones we get here where I am in Canada. You can get fancier olive oils, just not usually in your average store.
This is a tough match for the Italian bottles because they had to survive shipment, God knows if some of these bottles sat in the sun or had other harsh conditions that alters flavors/quality. If you live in Australia the oil won't be traveling far to reach your home and will retain better quality!
I live in Canada and we have olive oil from all over the word and Italian does not disappoint despite how far all these bottles have to travel, nice to see Australia has some legit olive oil, we do not have those here.
They have to follow some shipping rules in order to keep the quality instact!
An interesting blind tasting and even more so that the Spanish oil rated so high, given that so many foodies seem to rubbish Spanish extra virgin olive oil. From my own perspective I find it an interesting challenge. Currently I am cooking with a Greek Extra Virgin Olive oil, Lyrakis family Classic with an intensity rating of 3 (whatever that might mean). This particular brand has won a couple of silver medals at the New York International Olive Oil competition (2014 and 2016). The oil comes from Crete. I must admit I rarely buy Aus Extra Virgin Olive oil, and generally buy Greek extra virgin or one of the Italian brands. Having travelled across France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Morocco, from my experience Morrocan extra virgin olive oil was fantastic but I doubt you can buy it here in Aus.
Thanks for sharing your experience with olive oil! What about Italian brands, do you have a favorite?
@@vincenzosplateNo worries Vincenzo. In terms of Italian ones I have bought from the two big supermarkets inc Monini, Carbonell and in the past Bertolli. From my local IGA /speciality shop I know they have some other brands but given I tend to buy my oil in 3-4L cans and then decant to a small glass oil jar, I as a rule don’t buy the more artisan oils be they Australian or from Europe. They do have one called Berio EVOO which comes in a 3L can and maybe it could be worth trying ??
I hope this didn't cause too many problems with the bathroom or otherwise..
When you started the video, I had concerns. The idea of this much oil.. oof.
Easily more than a cup full of oil.. I wonder had you tried using it like a dip.. if that would of helped..
Another suggestion, for taste testing.. if you don't need to do them all blind.. You can have a Control to start with.. then go thru them with the Control tossed in. To see if you can pick out the control.. but also to give you a baseline to judge others by.
My guess is tho, some olive oils might pair better with certain things than others.. Some things have nice accenting flavors for a pasta, that might be less good with a salad etc..
Haha it was a risk that I was willing to take for you guys but thanks for your concern❤
And also thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it 😄
Big brands problem are they can vary a lot. I am a wine lover, and some time when I drink some more commercial brand they vary from - "oh it is good" to "meh, I leave this for cooking because it is below what I accept for drinking". If it was an RPG video game you will ahve in rules somthing like this:
- commercial brand - variation of quality 30-70%
- good brand 70-90%
Vincenzo please help, can you tell me if Carapelli olive oil is good? Following your tips from an earlier video it looks like it's the best I can get where I live.
I wanna see a « battle of extra virgin » between Spanish and Italian brands. Two of the most recognized country when it comes to Olive oil !
I mainly get my olive oil from Italy, but also really like Spanish olive oil as well. I hear southern France has very high quality olive oil, but they're more expensive.
Grazie!
Would love to know your thoughts on Graza Olive Oil from Spain....if you can find it there. It seems to be all the rage here in the states and I see that green squeeze bottle everywhere in cooking videos. Anyways, Buon Giorno Amico!
Hey there my friend! Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely give it a try if I find it 😊
Next blind taste test - red wine, please. xD
Have you been able to try Graza? It might only be in the US. First EVOO that really opened my eyes…still kinda trendy and may be overpriced-would love to hear your thoughts if you have tried it:)
Next blindfolded taste test: Basil cut with knife on chopping board vs ripped by hand.
i am kind of surprise colavita is ranked so low. it is the only decent Olive oil available on the shelf available for me to purchase in Malaysia. Unless i need to search for boutique stores.
Cobram estate is a good oil, also happy with La Espanola here in Australia. Cenz, how about rating espresso from la caffetierra (moka)
I buy in the Netherlands always Monini classic EVO, hope this test proves that I do good. I bet homemade will win, Lets watch now(fingers crossed).
(After watching)So Monini is a graet choice, I pay about 9.29 Euro for 0.5 L. And we have much more expensive EVO(wich I should try), but is that always better? I wonder Vincenzo, do you always use the same brand?
No, I like to experiment with my evoo brands but of course I have my favorites ❤
Vincenzo an idea to maybe dip the pane di casa Bread into the Olive oil that might give better test results with so many oils or I like to Airfry frozen chips and then drizzle over the chips olive oil something yeah I get it after a while it becomes sickly tasting the oils by them selves. cheers for you professional testing.
I'd imagine the oil coats your mouth and nose making this really hard. But Idk, I have never tried it.
I had to do a smelly experiment in a chemistry lab as a student once before, and the smell was so strong that after awhile you couldn't smell decipher different smells.
