  • On the trail of the robber barons and at the same time Genase skin guaranteed! Also here is a former location of the film: The Medic
A visit to the mysterious Hanstein Castle, many stories and myths surround the old castle.
Not for the faint of heart, here is my special summary in this video.
    Here's some history:
The Hanstein is 14 km from Heiligenstadt, just above the villages of Rimbach and Bornhagen, and is one of the most beautiful castle ruins in central Germany.
The monk Lambert von Hersfeld gave us the first reliable information about the existence of Hanstein Castle and at the same time about its destruction in his yearbooks for the year 1070: "(In August) King Heinrich IV the Duke (Otto von Nordheim) left Hanenstein Castle from the ground up from destroying."
At the time of Henry the Lion, a Boppo von Hanenstein appears in 1145, who was called Count Popo de Hanstein in 1151 and Count Poppo de Hanstein in 1170. In 1203 Hanstein Castle was first transferred to the Rhine Palatinate Count Heinrich, and soon afterwards to his brother, Emperor Otto IV.
In 1209 Archbishop Siegfried of Mainz claimed the castrum Hanenstein as property of the Archdiocese of Mainz. In order to win over the powerful princes of the church, Otto IV gave Hanstein Castle to Mainz.
In 1236 Heidenreich von Hanenstene appeared as a vassal of Mainz. The family to which he belonged descended from the Vitztumen Apolda; a branch of the same received in 1150 the Vitzamt on the Rusteberge in Eichsfelde in Mainz and around 1230 a fiefdom on Hanstein Castle in Mainz. From then on, the family named itself after this castle. From 1296 to 1299, Friedrich von Roßdorf and Dietrich von Hardenberg were the Mainz commanders at Hanstein Castle (as at the other Eichsfeld castles of the archbishopric).
In the meantime, Hanstein Castle had become quite dilapidated. On October 4, 1308, the brothers Heinrich and Lippold von Hanstein signed a contract with Archbishop Peter von Mainz, through which the former undertook to build a new castle under certain conditions: "They wanted to use their own funds on the Archbishop's Mountain, called Hanstein , rebuild the castle from scratch, the superstructure of wood, the substructure entirely of stone; they wanted no other right to this castle than that they and their male heirs would always be magistrates and burgesses. The castle, like the Rusteberg and other castles, should always be and remain an open castle for the archbishop.
Therefore, the guards and gatekeepers should pay homage to the archbishop as landlord, but at the same time swear to those of Hanstein as hereditary burghers. The archbishop wants to allocate 10 marks of fine silver annually for the maintenance of the castle and for the salary of the guards.
When the von Hanstein die out, the Hanstein Castle with the income mentioned above should revert to the Archbishop of Mainz.
The Hansteiners went to work and built the castle, which from then on was the ancestral seat of their widely ramified and quite wealthy family.
The found inscription stones that contain dates have made it clear that in the years 1414 and 1519 important extensions were added to the first building stock.
The purpose of the latter repairs was to put the castle in such a state of defense that, in times of danger, at least the cattle and property could be sheltered in it.
It was not the intention to renovate apartments for families from Hanstein.
Because the von Hanstein family had long since become too cramped at the ancestral castle and so they had settled on their knights' estates in Besenhausen, Bornhagen, Werleshausen, Wahlhausen, Ershausen, Oberelle and Henfstedt (in Henneberg) Geismar, as well as on Oberstein and Unterstein. So it happened that in 1683 Hanstein Castle was "desert and uninhabited".
Abandoned by its owners, it fell into disrepair, but for some time (1645, 1678) it remained a meeting point for all tribes to discuss their family affairs, until this became impossible due to dilapidation. Only from 1838 to 1840 did all von Hanstein have a new hall built in the old castle in order to be able to hold family conferences here.
Extensive renovations were carried out between 1904 and 1915 in anticipation of the castle's upcoming 600th anniversary.
In 1921 the 800th anniversary of the von Hanstein family was celebrated.
In 1946, the castle complex became public property in the GDR, and since 1952 it has been the legal entity of the municipality of Bornhagen.
Extensive renovation work began in the summer of 1985. The basis was the monument preservation objective of the Erfurt Institute for Monument Preservation.
Since 1990, Hanstein Castle has been owned by the municipality.
