I experimented with making my own granulating Dusk colors similar to the new Van Gogh Dusk colors: shrsl.com/2ikap
I used Quin Magenta, Medium Yellow, Pthalo blue and Pthalo green mixed with a black watercolor containing Pbk11.
I used Renesans Mars Black: www.etsy.com/listing/64310558...
Daniel Smith Lunar Black would also work: shrsl.com/2ikav
I also experiment with Jane Davenport Inkcredible ink and I really loved the effect: shrsl.com/2ikb5
I also tried Salt waterand granulation medium: shrsl.com/2ikba

I love the entirety of your channel, but I can't even express the JOY i got from this video!
And how i agree with how mixing (wasting) paint is much better than scrolling facebook!
also, I was aware of pb11 and its lovely effects, but this video just made me fall in love and created needs I didn't have previously...not complaining!
WE need joy and texture brings me joy!
    Thanks for this one Lindsay!

@@KobieK I suppose you have not watched the video. That video brought me joy, Jay. It clearly did not do it for you, and I suppose its okay. I'm sending you hugs, in hopes they help you go through whatever you're going through that makes you object to my expression of gratitude I adressed to a creator I like.
You don't have to lime what I like, Jay.
But you still get a hug if you want one :)

I was going to buy some Van Gogh dusky colours today, then I remembered this video. So I only got the PbK11 pigment and the magic happened. The mixes are just awesome and I can't wait to make a painting with them.
I only spent 2€ and now I can make all the dusky colours combo I want. Thanks, Lindsay!!! 🥰🥰🥰

I love this! In my opinion learning is never a waste of materials. And I say I'm "playing" when I am trying something new or learning a new process. There is no pressure in playing; the goal is to have fum.
Try putting a little plastic wrap or wax paper inside the lid. It will help protect the edges from the salt water and will make it much easier to get the top off. If the lid is a ring with an insert it is easier because you can wrap the plastic around the insert. Thanks again Lindsey, I truly appreciate your time and effort.💗

Great idea! I love Daniel Smith's Lunar Earth used in a similar way. Added to any green it makes a very granulating sap green with a "dirt" effect like DS's Green Apatite Genuine. It is prettier than I am describing it! Haha. One tube will last me a lifetime and I've shared half pans with my art group friends. I am going to have to get some of the Renesans Mars Black!

I was planning to do something similar myself and you beat me to it! Tho I’m sure I’ll still play around. Wondering if the Renesans paints didn’t respond as well because they are honey based? Be interesting to see if Senn or M Graham does the same. FYI , if someone is REALLY on a budget, Van Gogh’s oxide black is also made of PBk 11. There’s a nice PBk 11 in the Roman Szmal Aquarius paints, as well. New to me - I’ve never even thought about trying to paint with salt water and what the effects might be! I’ll have to try that! This was not a boring video at all, I think maybe you were just getting tired and things weren’t going necessarily as planned, lol! I had fun, though and learned things too.

I bought a small tube of DS Lunar Blue because "look at that shiny squirrel (on double sale at my local art store)!!" It's Cerulean Blue with Lunar Black. I did the cellophane trick and left it until almost dry. I took off the plastic and oh wow, the crystals. So at another big sale I bought the Lunar Black. The first option I tried was Opera Pink. Oh wow. And then Pthalo Green. And then a bright orange mix of Pyrrol Scarlet and Hansa Yellow. Each was at least as good as the last. My mixes were waterier on purpose than yours are and I think it helped show through the granulation. I used the most obnoxious colors in my collection. But oh wow, fun. After reading on the DS web site, I've been known to experiment with organic versus inorganic pigments, the reason why their Undersea Green is so cool. Because the inorganic/organic pigments don't interact, it creates a fun halo effect when one pigment runs away from the other. I've also played with a PR 101, which likes to chase away blues. That was fun. As a beginner I have a few paintings and a library of cool blobs, LOL. It's all good escape and with the DS it takes hardly any paint.

Thank you SO much, Lindsay. I am a sucker for moody colors and was also always kinda amazed by granulation colors but it never quite got to me to a point where I'd buy them, cause most of the time I want a soft effect to my painting and also I always wanna be flexible. So I didn't want to just have some colors I'd never get out and couldn't use for every painting. But buying this ONE black and mixing it with all my colors to achieve those wonderful moody granulation colors - I'm shook right now, tbh. :D Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to trying all the mixes!

I did like it, and enjoyed your impatience with the experiment. I think you read that the granulation medium was to be used as the diluting liquid for your paint. That might be why it wasn't as granulating since you used water to liquify (sp) the ink or paint. I probably missed something as I've never experimented with any of these. I really liked how beautiful your original experiments showed on my screen. Good fun for me, with no mess to clean up!
