Is there anyway to scale the output with a scalar and an offset i.e if you input 3V the app will display another value e.g 8 ?. If not is there any way to do this?
does it measure current and resistance too or just volts...

I think a $2 Chinese multimeter would be a better option.
And it is definitely better when you assess the risks involved in case the device malfunctions and blows up your phone.

@@uio86a All are same.. just get the cheapest one available and it'll do. The leads are of very poor quality but you can replace those with better ones.
I've been using my 2$ multimeter since 3 years now. Replaced batteries 3 times and it still works fine.

a little confused about all the comments about phone damage. is it due to improper use and exposing your phone to unexpected currents or voltages or are these products/apps known for damaging phones due to faulty software?
I think the fact that is connected to your phone at all is what is worrying. If something shorted inside and that voltage potentially gets through to your phone is likely to fry your phone

how to NOT fry your flagship phone in 6 simple steps:
1. beg/borrow/steal a cheap bluetooth headset
2. pry it off, desolder the microphone
3. take a bunch of resistors, do some math using Ohm's Law, solder them in the mic's place, with two probes.
4. install any voltmeter/oscilloscope free app from Play
5. pair your phone with your freshly modded BT headset
6. as a bonus, you can use one of the free signal generator apps there.

Without opening the circuit it is unclear if there is optical isolation. If not failure of the circuit can lead to the measured voltage being sent back on the USB leads to the phone.
