- Double the review, double the Metal Gear. The Solid series has some handheld entries as well, and I'm looking at the first one, Portable Ops. Set six years after Snake Eater, what's Big Boss getting himself into now?
Should I include Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2 in the Marathon?

I really like the "calling to the night" song
me too
Congrats, you have good taste in music!
There’s a reason why this song made it into Smash Bros. Brawl and Ultimate
Nintendo Junkie Because they decided that it was the best track in portable ops?
DonkeykongIsYTPooping It’s very likely. I can’t really think of any other tunes or songs from the game.
Guns of Patriots has the guiness world record of the longest single cutscene in a videogame.
Godspeed Johnny
How long is it?
@@galfinsp7216 From searching, MGS4 seems to hold the record for the longest sequence of uninterrupted cutscenes, those cutscenes being the game's epilogue, which lasts 71 minutes. I've also seen people mention that there is a cutscene in the game that lasts roughly 25 minutes which does still put it in the world record for having the longest individual cutscene in a game, but I don't know what specific cutscene that is myself.
@@aquasp102 the final cutscene that shows big boss is alive. It's 26 minutes long uninterrupted

+FalconPunch97 I think that was a bit unnecessary
+FalconPunch97 you OK there buddy?
+SomecallmeJohnny Bless you Johnny. I think Metal Gear Acid deserves it's shot in the sun because much like Ghost Babel it's an alternate continuity but does enough to stand on it's own feet as a true Metal Gear title and one hell of a compulsively addictive one at that. Also the longest game in the MGS series for me at least...Peace Walker.
Ac!d adds literally fucking nothing to either the story or the formula.
Ac!d... is just kinda there.
+SomecallmeJohnny I say YES! I want every MGS game possible covered.
9:09 This is the type of game where you really need to utilize the "Monster Hunter Claw Technique."
The MGS4 video will be like "Skip video to avoid spoilers".
Didn't know you were a metal gear fan
Johnny vs. Acid.
I mean the drug, not Metal Gear. Do acid. Where's the Johnny Drug Marathon?
***** "Greetings ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the drug Marathon. Today we'll be testing out a drug that I've heard of before, everyone's saying I should try it out. I have an interesting past with it. A lot of kids back in high school were all over this, so I'm excited to finally to try it out for myself. So here we go, this is my review of MDMA!
+Morbidcrab holy fuck this made my face hurt
@@av4d MDMA and Acid are totally different though
Metal gear 07
I know it's 4 years old now... But acid is the best, 100%.
The Sonic 06 review was 50 minutes long
God knows how long his MGS 4 review will be... #PrayForJohnny
+5persondude I say an hour and a half divided in 3.

you think he'll leave videos in-between each upload of him smoking a cigarette for 8 minutes?
+5persondude nah, he'll just patch in a full install option with trophies.
5persondude Unlikely.
MGS4 is not THAT bad. :P
Portable ops plus was surprisingly my first entry into the series. I loved collecting soldiers and playing online with my younger brother. It was a really good time and I'm now hooked on metal gear. It's just weird that my first mg game didn't even have a plot
Mgs5 was the first one i played
My first metal gear game was mgs vr missions.
mine was 2 then 3 with the vita hd collection, then 5 then 1 then peace walker (weird asf order but it became one of my favourite franchises ever) not sure if I'll ever play mgs4 since I don't have a ps3 anymore
For me MGS2 was the first, then 1 and 3, then 4, then V, then I eventually got PW and MPO on my Vita.
"How much of a DRAG it was." I see what you did there...
You watch Johnny?
KidSnivy69
Yep.

It's a visual pun, a pun gun if you will.
I just finished the Ghost Bagel reveiw. man i could go for a babel now.

😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Never mind.
I wish I got my hands on Portable Ops.
The thing is that this game teeters between canon and non canon. I believe it's canon because it has moments that would shape the later games but on the other hand, it isn't cause Kojima wasn't directing it. Not to offend Kojima but I personally believe it's canon.
Why? Because there were many moments that would be instrumental in the later games like the formation of FOXHOUND and the Patriots.
Oh and the idea of building up units and what not would be perfected in Peace Walker. I hope Johnny does cover Peace Walker because it would be so awesome.
I know and I hate the arguments over if its canon or not. I think it is
+MegamanNG I remember during the development of MGS5 he said in a interview that he considers Portable OP's mostly cannon however there some aspects to it that are non-canon. So there ya go. I wished what interview it was though.
+MegamanNG Yeah, Portable Ops is somewhat canon. Basically Kojima has been taking a few pages from George Lucas' canon playbook and while things may have happened in a game they didn't happen entirely the way it was shown. Getting the Philosphers' Legacy in full and Forming Foxhound to take down rogue members of FOX happened. But the Eva side mission and the Metal Gear fight didn't with Four contradicting the Eva part and Peace Walker having the true first Metal Gear in Metal gear Zeke. Konami was just being rather odd with most other things about Metal Gear since they seem to have gotten a bit controlling later on in the series life time.
Obviously the whole "Null" bullshit is non-canon as the backstory in Metal Gear 2 takes full priority.
doesn't Portable Ops introduce Kaz to Big Boss? at the very least it makes it that people aren't alittle confused why this Kaz guy is with Big Boss in Peace Walker (although we find out it is Miller in MGS1, but not immediately) I think one of the codec calls to say how they met, but not until 5-6 hoirs into the game
I know you made these years ago, but every couple of years I go through an MGS obsession and watching these really brought it all back.
I just want to say I’ve very much enjoyed these videos. They’ve not only brought me up to scratch with the stories, filling in blanks and the retcons I’ve forgotten about, but your opinion applied is always far from bias and very impartial, supplying the viewer with a very balanced review. A nice mix of ‘this sucks, but however’ and ‘this is great, but the downfall is...’ - with your own personality and charm present throughout. Very solid (pardon the pun) videos, my friend. Well made, well enjoyed.
Calling to the Night is hands-down one of the best pieces of video game music.
take as much time as you need, i very much enjoy this marathon of mgs series, great work.
Johnny, I hadn't noticed before in previous reviews but you've improved heaps in your Johnny vs. series. You're more animated, more confident and your writing has a lot more polish and professionalism to it. Nice work, man.
"Finnally, we can leave all that crap in San Hieronymo behind....."
- Miller, recalling the totally canon events of Portable Ops.
Hey man I’m new to your channel. I am a Metal Gear Fanatic as well and I really am liking your videos!! I LOVED this song, “Calling To The Night”! I listened to it all the time and even to this day lol.
You have all our love and prayers, Johnny. Thank you for your great work! :D
So I guess we start a Twitter campaign #PrayForJohnny
+KelvinBelmont I'm giving him my energy as I type
Gotta love "Calling to the Night." That soundtrack is freaking epic! But as for whether it's canon, like you said, it is, but it really doesn't matter.
It's weird how a canon MGS game; the literal next game in the MGS timeline 5 years after Snake Eater (1964); and Portable Ops being set in 1969. Even though the next sequel to Snake Eater was Peace Walker because that games set in 1974; an entire decade after Snake Eater. But I wouldn't say Portable Ops doesn't matter. I mean; it canonically establishes the first time Roy Campbell makes his appearance in the MGS series; along with Frank Jaeger/Gray Fox; shows that Sokolov somehow survived getting tortured by Volgin in Snake Eater; shows where Major Zero is and what he's been planning this entire time; and shows that Ocelot is a triple(maybe even quadruple agent?) But has always had the highest regard/respect for Naked Snake/Big Boss; no matter what; but this game shows that while Maj. Zero and Ocelot don't really have the best of intentions (of trying to interpret The Boss's will); neither does Big Boss; but Big Boss realizes this during the finale of MGS4: Guns of The Patriots. But yeah; I agree; "Calling To The Night"; is one of the BEST MGS songs ever. And that's the end credits theme; for this game? Wow. But like Johnny; I first heard "Calling To The Night"; in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; and I couldn't believe how great this song sounded. I mean; I'm already a die hard MGS fan; but I still don't know how to trigger the codec conversations with the characters...I keep pressing down; but the messages never show up...
God damn I love Johnny's reviews, they are so detailed and professional.
This is one of the few MGSes that I missed (along with Ghost Babel and the Acids). For some reason this one bothered me more than the others that I didn't play it, so I was probably gonna get it at some point. Thanks for making this video so I could get a look at it and save myself some trouble. Gotta say, your method of going through a series at a time is pretty awesome, and nobody else does that really. People like me who feel OCD if we don't play one or two entries in a series actually get a lot out of this kind of format where we can see what we missed in the context of the larger series. Dunno if you'll read this but I appreciate you dude!
I guess the second Metal Gear Solid game takes place in 1970.

I was wondering about the „Plus“-Version on the Vita Store. 2 minutes in you clearly helped me in my decision to only buy the regular one. Thanks!
I didn't notice you uploaded twice until you mentioned it. Sweet!
Johnny, if you read this, PLEASE do MGS: Peace Walker.
+Jackson Holder lol if he did portable ops he's gonna do Peace Walker :P ,probably after MGS4
+Artakha the Creator and he'll finish it all off with MGS5, although I would've preferred an MGS4 marathon finale instead. It feels more like an ending than MGSV does.
Every single contribution mgs4 makes to the overall canon is a disaster. MGSV does it's best to fix the damage by ending the franchise on the same note Kojima originally intended with MGS2.
Didn't Peace Walker take place before Portable OPs and is even MORE canon? Plus it's a precursor to Da PHANTOM WE PLAYING as a Fake Big Boss DIS whole Time, WTF KOJIMA?

Amazing reviews John like always
Before this marathon, I only played MGS1, which was really great, but I never got around to the other games. This marathon helped me get back into Metal Gear, and I thank you for that, Johnny. Playing the games and watching your reviews has been a blast. I've only just made it to MGS4, and from what I've seen so far...I pray for your sanity.
You forgot to mention that you could collect soldiers by literally travelling around with your psp, by scanning for wifi routers. It's a fun minigame.
Interesting. Wonder if they got the idea from the Mystery Gift Pokemon.
um, I'm guessing Metal Gear Solid 4 is probably gonna be the same length as John's Sonic 06 review the way John and everyone else is describing it. Am I right? If so, then WHOLE BOY! I wish you luck John! Hope you can make it out alive.
Just remember, when you see the video make sure you have a good amount of time.
+KidSnivy69 oooooooh. Well, if most of the video is just gonna be John talking about the story, then I think I'll just skip it so I can avoid spoilers. I haven't got around to playing the MGS games yet cause I like to save up my money and also I need to find the HD collections at GameStop when I can.
+PyroFinnTheManiac MGS4 is probably the cheapest metal gear game at like $8, but hoooooy boy there are cutscenes that literally go on for what would be the length of a Hollywood movie not even joking.
+PyroFinnTheManiac the legacy collection is your best bet
+Finalblue1234 +DeathgGod
I do plan on going with the legacy collection. It's just I need to save up over $40 and then find a copy at GameStop. Mind you, I'm not the richest person in the world and I like to save up my money for other things as well. Soon tho
Love your reviews Jhonny! Peace from Brazil!
and to think, the story only gets crazier from here on out. Good luck on the rest of your review Johnny.
In case this has not be answered yet, yes the PS TV works very well with PSP games. Both the Vita and the PS TV allow you to program the right analog stick to whatever you want (such as the d pad for camera control). If you ever find yourself with the digital version (and of course a Vita/PSTV) I would give it a try Johnny.
Yes Johnny do include Acid in the mix, you could do mgs4 then acid then mgs5 then rising
+Oussama Okbi Peace Walker? D:
+True Pride well he played the complete sonic series
You really make some great content. Keep at it!
cant wait for the next metal gear video. Thank you. keep up the great work.
MGS 4 next... see you in June Johnny 😀
+Tom Williams Productions more like maybe late January or early February
+Gmaniac01 maybe sonic 06 long or maybe longer
+Gmaniac01 The game is not that long, but the video is going to be really long because of the story and cutscenes.
+Tom Williams Productions and that's just the story
+Snow Neptune skip to 68:00 to avoid spoilers lol
“Jesus Christ the United States is fucked up (in Metal Gear)” in real life, too, Johnny! lol
Johnny I recommend you put an annotation around the time you want people to skip to in order to avoid spoilers. Makes life easier but i understand if you don't want to do it. Love all your videos and hope you keep up the great work.
Great job johnny really like your reviews keep up the great work
peace walker is happening right?
+SHADOWSONIC1231 I've been concerned about the same thing.
+SHADOWSONIC1231 mostly after mgs4
john what about peacewalker?
+Gmaniac01 true.
+UnchartedBandicoot maybe before grounds zero
+Snow Neptune maybe
+UnchartedBandicoot Thank you. I was forgetting the other handheld game.
+Cmckerracher Your welcome.
New year, New review Happy New Year Johnny
Johnny love your Everyman reviews keep them coming.
Why didn't you include both into one video?
Oh and by the way, I saw Portable Ops Plus at a used game store the other day, but stealth game isn't my cup of tea.
And Johnny, you have my prayers.
I remember reading his Twitter explaining why, but I don't remember exactly what he said.
he said he split them in two to make them easier to absorb.
+Dellon James Wich doesnt make sense to me since his Metal Gear saga video is basically four games in one
EvilDead Ash I guess that's only because those games had a very basic story structure, even compared to Ghost babel, and Portable ops.
hold on johnny my pizza is here
+Danny Boi ok im back
Cool profile pic hissssssssss

I’m happy to be getting into the Metal gear games now my first game I played though was Phantom pain so I’m happy to have found out about the series that way
Fun fact: Nobody has finished this video yet.

Cool story bro
Ah. 'Makes sense. :3
I typically watch videos at 2x speed
+Starnana Guy Even when you posted that, I'd imagine John watched in full before uploading it to make sure it rendered okay, so...
Every game starring Big Boss after MGS3 kept crapping on his story. There was no need for Portable Ops, Peace Walker, or MGSV. They just ruined the very basic, but powerful ending of MGS3.
2 years late, wish I saw this comment back then. I agree. MGS3's ending was fine. With a little player imagination we can easily extrapolate Big Boss eventually going rogue; the seeds were planted then and there.
And let's not forget the dethroning boner of suckitude - Sokolov somehow being alive. No, Volgin beat him to death and split his head open. Sokolov does not have the physical or mental training required to fake death pill his way out of that situation.
Not to mention that his conversation with Snake before that indicated he knew he was going to die and had accepted it. At this point it's just disrespectful to his character to bring him back. Same thing that happened to Shadow in Sonic Heroes. SA2's ending was powerful and serious; Sonic Heroes brought him back and Sonic *doesn't bat an eyelid*
That Samus shirt, me want! Also good luck with MGS4 Johnny!
5:39 - 5:42: If this is the Canonical Ghost Babel, then Snake Eater is the Canonical NES Metal Gear!

Nice to see Johnny's first movie review is coming up
Hoo boy, next up is the big one. This is gonna be good.
I actually really enjoyed Portable Ops and PO +, especially the latter for it's simplicity, I still play it to this day, even with most of the MGS library.
Sir Johnny, my prayers are with thee! I excitedly, but patiently, await the next video. However, please don't push yourself too hard for our (the fans') sake. Godspeed, Sir Johnny! Godspeed!
Wow, I'm glad I watched Ghost Babel first! I was about to watch this one first but my gut told me to watch that other one first. I must cherish my gut!
that song in the intro......god it gave me the chills lol
I play this game on my samsung galaxy s9 and its fantastic! I loved portable ops plus as a kid and now I'm pleased to carry it around in my pocket
My god Guns of Patriots , Im just gonna say I do not dread the long video I wait patiently and excitedly for it
In all honesty, the only other online mgs review compilation that included the acid series was the old GT reviews. Considering you plan on going all the way to phantom pain (which GT didn't do) I think you should include the ac!d games. I actually liked them. They were an interesting take on the psp and tried to push mgs in a new direction. Plus, I'm sure you could contribute a fresh interesting perspective on them while they've remained relatively untouched since GT reviewed them. Great vids btw. You're really doing the series justice even though they've been done a lot. Adding the other games could separate your vids even more from other reviewers. Cadicarus only did 1-3, matthematosis did a bunch minus PO, acid, Game boy, gz, and phantom pain. Super bunnyhop is missing a bunch too (4, and the portable games). Looking forward to your vids. Keep up the great work.
I actually played portable ops with my brothers friend crew recently, they all like to gather up and play local multiplayer games and my brother joked one night saying they could play MGS: Portable ops... it turned out everyone had a copy of the game actually, me included. That was a really fun time actually. It's sort of surreal to enjoy a game in a local multiplayer setting that feels more meant for online though.
an underrated game! great review as always johnny
my very first metal gear. its what got me into the series. got it on a whim and was glad i picked it up
its the first and only metal gear i beat lol.
I'd like to see those two games, let's see it.
Two Somecallmejohnny reviews in one day? Did we time travel back to christmas?
2 reviews in 1 day? Nice!
Two uploads?!? Woah!
Kojima said in an interview that some parts of the story he considers canon and others not. I think the fact that Big Boss can recruit Ocelot and EVA as soldiers in Columbia like Pokemon speaks for itself.
We may finally see that feature length johnny vs review next time. I want it on blu-ray.
Sonic ‘06 still reigns
Nice, 2 vids to watch!
Hey Johnny! Definitely continue with the Metal Gear Acid series. I know next to nothing about that series, and if you're going to do the Metal Gear franchise, why not go big and get them all?? Also, are you planning on doing Peace Walker after 4?
Damn I wonder how long I'm going to sit in front of a screen listening to Johnny talk about Metal Gear Solid 4. Probably a long time. Oh boy, this is going to be fun.
Shut the fuck up
\o/ sending Johnny some energy, just have the review done by the end of the year ;)
Ya did Snake's Revenge - may as well do the Acid games too!
ive never played this game. (skipped the psp overall for a ds) but it has the same playstyle as peace walker and mgsv with the recruitment style. and i love it so much. it is so much fun to see my unit grow and develop into my own army.
also i love the comic book art style. it is so cool. i wish i could draw like that.
I still remember that one mission that gave me an automatic fail, "the wild wilderness- captured major"
Anglo was the first mg game I bought myself and PLEASE review acid, I can't find a decent video review anywhere.
Will you also include Peace Walker in the retrospective marathon?
I like how I glitch out CZcams so before I go to watch this it gives me Ghost Babel as an add for some reason.
Yes! Review the acid games! By the way, I am really enjoying these videos on the franchise.
I'm planning on doing a video on this game once I get a PSP-3000 and some new PSP Component Cables. BUT I HAVE TO SAY, this was and probably still is what I consider to be the best PSP game. It was the second one I owned and I still play it at least once every year. It's just short enough to make it as a portable game. But long enough to feel like a console game. Plus it was MGS on the go, and I love it!
Hmm, I don't think I'd really want to vote whether to see John cover the MGS Acid games or not. But I'll check the strawpoll to see what everyone else says-
1,300 say yes, and 300 say no. Eeyup, saw that coming. Welp, good luck with the rest of the marathon John!
I hope Johnny mentions the Tigrex/Rathalos fight in the Peace Walker review... He really needs some Monster Hunter in his life.
Portable Ops had an absolutely amazing multiplayer, same with Plus. Great battles and in a certain mode, there was the risk of permanently losing the soldier you were playing as upon death! A great MGO experience.
Hey there Johnny, i love your take and review on Metal Gear Solid Portable ops but you gotta give the game more credit. The game it pretty much was the base mechanics set up for many features for future installments like Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Metal Gear Solid Ground Zero and Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain. Take a look at how all these games just like Portable ops were mission based, each had extra ops, capture and recruit soldiers, building an army and managing its resources from food to weapons Technology etc, surprisingly it was the first of the series to have the fulton recovery which that even shocks me that it has it. The game deserves more recognition than just a smaller game in general that's Flillerific.
0:48
John, you have no idea how easy it is to make a meme out of that image.
Johnny, on the PS Vita you can map D-Pad to the second analog, which fixes this and many other PSP game dpad camera problems.
I actually enjoyed this game, I know it has some mixed reviews and in the now "refined" story line it's not actually canon I think, along with Rising: Revengeance. But I liked how you had Roy Campbell as an ally and I hoped he would come back in Peace Walker and would show how he became the leader of Foxhound. Mate you just need to adopt the finger cramp style of using the analogue nub with your thumb and using the d-pad with your index finger while having your middle finger on L.
I for one would like an acid review
thanks
good review bro
I heard Kojima actually retconned this game, and replaced it with Peace Walker. I'm not too sure but it doesn't seem referenced in Peace Walker, or MGS V.
John i wish you good luck with the MGS4 review and i hope the hell you'll go though making the review won't last that long
I'm really looking forward to you covering Metal Gear Rising.
Don't worry he will
MGS4 is gonna be one hell of a video
