  • Monday, January 16, 2023 - The Canadian postal service honors an Anishinaabe veteran with his own postal stamp. The founder of the Native Dads Network shares programs they offer such as the “Boys with braids.” Avi Kwa Ame may soon become a national monument.
Canada is paying tribute to a prominent Anishinaabe veteran. Sgt. Tommy Prince served in the Canadian military and is a decorated war veteran. The Canadian postal service issued a stamp in his honor late last year and now people are using the stamp in Canada. Prince was a citizen of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation. ICT's Patty Talahongva spoke to Gordon Blue Sky, the chief of the nation about the man and the stamp that honors Prince.
Mike Duncan saw a need to help guide young Native fathers and started the “Native Dads Network” in Sacramento, California. Today, the group continues to help fathers, and guide the next generation.
For years, leaders of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe have asked that Avi Kwa Ame be named a national monument. The tribe has land in three states, Arizona, California and Nevada. In December, there were signs that President Joe Biden may soon announce that designation. Fort Mojave Chairman Timothy Williams told ICT's McKenzie Allen-Charmley that he is encouraged by the president’s words.

For natives, yes. But it's important to stop the cultural appropriation. Especially with Chinese made headdress and counterfeits.
