Big Train Tours: The Dome Car Monument!

Join Colorado Railroad Museum Executive Director Paul Hammond for a Virtual Tour each month (as part of the Museum’s “Still Working On The Railroad” online content initiative)!
Each tour will focus on a different piece of historic equipment in the Colorado Railroad Museum’s collection. Today we go in-depth and explore the history of the unique Dome Car Monument which is now on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO!

Excellent presentation on the history of Dome Cars which l enjoyed during the 1970's riding the Rio Grande Zephyr on trains 17 & 18 with my family. And in memory of Robert W. Richardson I thank everyone at the CRRM s belmont

Via Rail Canada's "The Canadian" Vista Dome Streamliner still operates till this day.

I remember riding along with my father as he drove west on US-6 through Glenwood Canyon in the 1960s. I was a rail fan even then, and he was always willing to stop alongside the highway to visit the vista dome car monument. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized that the location of the monument required a very dangerous left turn across eastbound traffic on a blind curve, but Dad never refused to stop. I was so glad when the Colorado Railroad Museum relocated this monument to its collection - it brings back a lot of find memories.

Please consider replacing the "glass"to the dome and side windows.

The model was knocked off the top of the monument about 15 years ago and damaged. At that time the shop cleaned it up....I'll ask about glass.

I remember seeing it in the canyon on the way to Glennwood as a kid. Glad we have it at the Museum now and I can see it daily!

Another great video from CRRM. I remember stopping different times at the monument when it was in the canyon back in the late fifties and sixties. Really appreciate it being saved in Golden!
