I don't remember them ever claiming that Peggy would be "ugly" in any way, do they?. I think he thinks he nags, has a whiny tone of voice, expect money all the time that she wastes, and so on.. also when a man isn't even enjoying life to begin with, even sex seems like a hassle.. so.. I‘ve read a story once where it was stated that the role for Peggy was supposed to be played by Roseann Barr. The jokes made so much more sense after that. I guess they just stuck with the jokes because Peggy is undeniably hot.
The thing to understand about their marriage is that al very much loves peg and vice versa, they have just become so comfortable that they dont appreciate each other in the way people generally think of. Al compares peg to his baseball glove in one episode, where he says its not the best glove, its not the biggest glove, but its his glove, and afterall all the years it fits him perfectly. You really need to see the full shows understand their family dynamic... the next closest thing is "all in the family", which is also worth a watch, and disturbingly relavent even 45-55 years later.

MWC was like that because they did rebel against normal soaps. But the main goal from tv shows is always to make the most money. So a beautiful wife and daughter are the logical choice here.

I think you missed the point of why Al treats Peggy like he does. It's not because she's ugly it's because they've been married forever and she does not take care of him even though he works his ass off.

His dreams of playing football are dead, he works a job he hates while she blows through his meager paycheck on pointless things, she never cares for the house or prepares him dinner for after work despite being home all day, their kids are ingrates, etc.
I like Married With Children because everyone is fair game and they spread things out (anyone can be on either side of the joke). It is also one of those shows where they tend to get very attractive people in cameo roles.

The reason for this is because her bust size had increased rather noticeably, and she felt uncomfortable wearing the "trashy" attire Peg Bundy was famous for. Eventually she overcame her aversion and...well, let's just say that even as a huge Al Bundy fan, it was hard to muster the suspension of disbelief required to accept that he didn't want to get busy with the missus.
GenX targeted Fox shows were the best! The Simpsons (while a sad irony of what it was for 15 years) is still on the air. It was a different time. And a reflection of a synical and dark sarcasm generation.
Ever since I first saw an episode of this series I wondered why they portrait the usual men always want it and women always have an excuse for not wanting, the other way around. Never made sense to me, especially not while he has that collection of magazines in the cellar and keeps getting excited when he sees some pretty girls. I can only guess it's ment to express he doesn't like his wife for a variety of reasons other than her looks, where those other reasons are so overwhelming that he extends it to not liking her looks either. Still doesn't make much sense though, but then this is over the top exaggerated comedy, who cares whether it makes sense as long as the punchlines are hilariously funny.
It's so funny to your generation, because they won't make shows like this anymore. I've noticed your generation is much more animated with your emotions. Horror movies seem to terrify you, sad movies make you act distraught and classic comedy touching on subjects not done todays make you fall over laughing or sometimes make you mad because it's comedy overload for your generation. Our generation was used to these things so the old saying, "once you're used to something it's not a big deal" is true. Years ago, I worked in a place where we broadcast porn to guest rooms and had to monitor and change the VHS tape when the movie was over. At first it was weird, but after a while you didn't even pay attention to what was on the screen.
