FS2020 - UPDATED Autopilot tutorial in the DC Designs F-14 (version 1.0.1)

  • Here is my UPDATED take on the DC Designs F-14 Tomcat autopilot system. We go over the basics and then do an ILS approach down to minimums and the an RNAV approach to mins. The manual that came with it has very limited information on the autopilot so I figured I would save you some time and create this video. If you like it, please hit the like button and consider subscribing. I will try to keep putting up similar content and that will help me grow my channel. And if there is anything you would like to see covered please tell me in the comments and I'll do my best.

If you've read this far, for fun, I've added an Easter Egg: At the end of the GTN 750 install you can see my PC's wallpaper, if you pause it....It's a picture I took after flying a famous actor into the same airport we landed at in the F-14 later on in this video. The man with the blue hat is the world famous actor walking into the terminal with some other passengers. Can you guess who he is? (His first TV series was in 1967, he has been in many shows and movies since and is still acting to this day. From the UK)

Great video as the others. You remind me of my good friend from Nova Scotia. Your voice made me think I know this guy. I like the way you make your videos Great to learn from a pilot. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work.

Great video! You explain what I wanted to do with F14, that is GPS flight, and what I wondered, like unstable alignment to ILS. Thanks!

Tomcat autopilot is "wonky" to say the least. Your video was a big help (I've referred to it several times) and I'm still getting the hang of it. Thank you!

This video is by far the most well explained I've seen without a doubt. Would it be possible to make a video on how to 'Setup the different Bugs' Thank You So Much for All the Hard Work, you have put in making these F-14 video's.

I was considering this DC Design F-14 for MSFS but I did not know that you can actually fly it using ILS and RNAV approaches not to mention the GPS750 integration until you showed it in this video...sort of turning the F-14 crude navigation to almost match the other study sims with these various work arounds...I just recently got the PMDG DC-6 and CRJ700...thanks for sharing and I have liked it.

Good this tutorial, by lack of a more deep manual (there is one but for me lacking the details in the sim). The speed dial and little arrow! I never discovered that one.

Thanks for the nice videos! I‘d like to ask you, if you could please add a list, when to hit what switch/button to make the F-14 catch the glideslope. My Tomcat denies catching and flying the ILS glideslope every time. It flies over it without descending and I do not know what I am doing wrong. Thanks!

Hi Sim Pilot IRL. Great tutorial for a start. Probably the best for this aircraft I've seen. Very thorough. I recently purchased this aircraft via marketplace and I am having nothing but weird stuff occur on every occasion when flying this beast. I am following all the steps setup on your video with all the right switches on ( I even downloaded the GTN750) and following the approach pattern then as I approach final the aircraft just dives and starts spinning losing altitude. I have checked and the Vnav is not on all the right things are on the display with the LOC in the box, Lnav with VOR and GS showing. Either that or I hit the glide slope and the aircraft maintains its altitude and does not descend and the GS comes and goes. I have nil issues landing in manually but I'm frustrated that its not behaving the way it should. Any help would be appreciated

Hey, thank you for checking out the video....I know how you feel. It's taken me quite some time to figure out the plane and many random crashes into the ground..... like unexplainable.... most I've been able to avoid by making sure I have the flaps full.... and I only use the DLC switch when lined up on a stable final if I'm flying visual. There's a lot of unknown automation happening with it and I hope it gets sorted out in future updates.... just be patient with it, and know that I've gone through the exact same thing when I started learning it. Remember this is not like a real F-14, it's made by DC Designs and the systems are made to function in MSFS. I still love it though, great plane. If it gets updated I'll create new tutorials based on the changes. Cheers!

Hi all, The same thing already happened to me. I think DC Designs tried to push to the limits of realism, by replicating the problem early F-14As had during the 1970s and 1980s, the compressor stall problem. This is explained on page 25 of the user guide, with the recovery procedure. Try not to slow down below 140Kts during landing, although the user guide mentions 127Kts, and watch the AoA to avoid going over 6-7º. And if your aircraft starts to lose altitude, make sure both fuel valves are pushed opened, and recrank any engine that might have shut off. To avoid losing precious time, program the «Engine autostart» command into one of your HOTAS switches, instead of using the ones inside the cockpit. Of course, my suggestion is not fullproof.
And thank you very much Sim Pilot IRL, for your great videos. I learned so much in order to enjoy this superb aircraft, the DC Designs F-14, one of my preferred in my collection. Much better than the Asobo F/A-18 Super Hornet. Cheers !

I'm having two issues with this model. The first is that you can't climb above 30,000 feet because the turbines stop working. The second is that the F14b model the HUD is very bright, you can't see anything

I’ve always had an issue with flaps bugging out and auto sweep not working

  • @Lionheartwolf135

Is there a reason why ATC will always say to go around when using ILS to land? I don't have any traffic turned on (I play in VR so it helps from stuttering.) I usually have copilot ask for permission to land about 3 miles out from landing, and I get clearance to land but literally before I touch down I get the "go around." With VFR I can practically bounce in with no issue from ATC, but when using the method in this video I will always have ATC on my back for not having clearance to land.

How do i shut off auto flaps?

    • @simpilotirl1954
      @simpilotirl1954  Před 2 lety

As far as I know you just lift the glass cover that's beside the throttle that allows the wings to be in manual sweep mode.... I believe that sort of disables the auto flaps as well but that's as much as I know. Good luck!
