  • We finally ordered and received our electric power steering setup from a Prius to retrofit into the LTD. Of course, an immediate bench test was in order. This electric setup looks to be better that the original hydraulic power steering!

    Ron Monahan asked a really great question and one I think a lot of you will want to know, so I'm pinning it here - "How much does it weigh?" The power assist unit weighs in at 15.1 lbs and the control box is 1.66 lbs. Considering there's extra shafting and tubing on the assist unit that will be cut off, and we're removing about 6" of the factory column, it's safe to say this conversion will add a mere 12-15lbs at most to your ride.

      That's because I haven't installed it yet. I really don't have enough room in my garage to do this without extreme difficulty and I'm now building a place that will have plenty of room. I will definitely do an install video on this - sorry for the delay.

    Very good knowledge thank you Sir.
    Just wondering... Im about doing the same into a classic car but just wondering if the same can be done with brz/frs epas without connectionthe canbus system? Or it would be better off to have 04-09 prius epas conversion because its an older system?

    • @AlexLTDLX
      @AlexLTDLX  Před rokem

      This same one is going into the car without CANbus. But there are other videos on CZcams that show other options - that's how I settled on this one. Sorry I don't remember the video itself, but some guy tested a whole bunch of these. I'm sure a search would find it quickly.

    I install in my minivan , when the car stand by its works and easy to steering. But when i drive on the road it becomes more heavy than manual steering. I got the same Prius steering as yours. Is it mine steering have problem. And after few hours test now its suddenly no work.

      @AlexLTDLX  Před 3 lety

      That's a really great question - I pinned the answer up above, but since you're the first to ask - 15.1 lbs for the assist and 1.66 lbs for the control box.

    Awesome vid.I had been thinking of using a electric rack,but the aftermarket kits are PRICEY. This is a great idea,cant wait to see how it works out,even though i bought all the power steering parts for my car already. Any idea if your considering the electric A/C,i was looking at that as a possible future project.Thanks for the great videos

    • @AlexLTDLX
      @AlexLTDLX  Před 3 lety +1

      I am indeed considering electric A/C - that is one thing long gone from the car. My jury's still out on that one. I don't drive the car when it's much above 80-85 out... no point; it'll make less power then. But if I do spy a Nissan Leaf setup or something similar and adaptable (don't know if the Leaf is, just using that as an example); I'll go for it. I'm really waiting for Peltier devices to see a massive leap forward in efficiency.

    Hi, I've got a question, I hooked my system up and the motor will just start spinning clockwise with no input. If I put any input in it reverses or locks up and then the control box (which must have an overload in it) clicks and the motor stops. My motor has 4 wires coming out of the small plug that turns it on, two white and two black, do you think or know if both black wires need to be hot?

    • @AlexLTDLX
      @AlexLTDLX  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't know. But it sounds like the sensor on the shaft might be damaged.

  • @MissouriOldTimer
    @MissouriOldTimer Před 2 lety

    I have an 07 prius motor set up like yours, it has a 12 pin connector , I unfortunately didn't get the pigtail that plugs in that socket, is the one little wire coming from there the only small wire you use or what are the 2 or 3 other wires hook to? I can't seem to get this set up to work.

    • @AlexLTDLX
      @AlexLTDLX  Před 2 lety

      It was just the one wire. Hope that helps.

    • @MissouriOldTimer

      @@AlexLTDLX thank you, it's possible the motor or control box is bad, the box does click after hooking the small wire to the hot post on the battery,, thanks again.

    • @AlexLTDLX
      @AlexLTDLX  Před 2 lety

      It could be. It could also be the torque sensor. In fact, in my research that seems to be the primary failure point - more so than the motor at least.
