    Hey I just got the same combo grill. I see u put your charcoal on the charcoal side instead of the smoker. Isn’t it hard to cleanup up the ash and leftover coals afterwards? I use the smoker side so the cleanup can be easy by opening the side latch door

      JP Hampton thats a good trick that I never thought of. Also do u have issues with flies hovering on this grill even when you aren’t cooking ? I never had this issue until I got this grill. I clean the drip tray on the gas side after every cook too.

      Not at all, I wait until it is for sure out and I use a shop vac to clean it out about once a month. I've just recently noticed ants will come and attack the drip tray if I don't clean it, so that gets cleaned after I cook, too.

    I picked up a used one for cheap. It is one of the early brass emblem versions. I am not surprised that the propane side is not designed that good. I think they should be built with only 2 burners. In time most people will witness the flimsy heat tents and their supports fall apart from rust. It might even happen to the rear burner supports. The one I got has obvious rust on hotspots like the side where the pot burner is and on top of the propane side and door. It even has it on the gas vent. Some of that rust could be prevented, but the internal propane parts with the extreme heat they get even at low is too much for them. I think adding a lava rock rack in the propane side instead of those heat tents would be an improvement. I may even seal up some of those burner holes. I have the Highland as well. With smoke leaks , I used lava lock, but I cut it in strips and put it where it was needed. Given the width of the mating surface you are wasting money if you don't cut the length of the tape in 2. The more you put on the top hinge side, the more it will hold the bottom open because it can only be compressed so much. That is why on the upper edge I cut a very thin strip to be pinched between the door and barrel edge. It also pays to wash the surface off with soap and water to remove any oil before applying the heat tape. I may sell the Longhorn after I improve it.

    What are your tips on cleaning the grills to prevent them from rusting ? Much love from Australia 🙏🏾

      I run the inside temperature up to about 700 degrees to burn everything off and then hit the grill with a scrubber. Sometimes, I'll dip it in water while scrubbing for some of the tough stuff. I wash the outside with dawn dish soap and water and I scrub it with a rim cleaning brush fot a car. I then spray PAM vegetable oil all over it or add vegetable oil to a rag and wipe everything down. I then get it up to about 450 degrees and let it smoke off and then cool before covering it.

    When you use Charcoal i see your leaving the top vent open, do you leave the side door open on the smoker box?

    • @RoadandReel
      @RoadandReel  Před 2 lety

      Yes, I use the bottom to control the burn on the charcoal. I use the top to control the heat and smoke. I can have the charcoal burning really hit with the bottom open, but open the top to let the heat escape for things like searing a tri tip and then I can cut the air on bottom and top to hold the heat in and make it cook evenly all around like an oven.

    when I cook in the charcoal grill, the heat goes to the gas and the smoker grill and wont maintain the temp in the middle. Can I block off the vent slightly on the left of the charcoal grill so the temp will stay at constant?

    • @RoadandReel
      @RoadandReel  Před 3 lety

      Yes and open up the top until the air starts flowing up and out, then choke down the air of the smoker side to regulate the fire and temp.

    Hey man, how do you keep the charcoal grill at a steady temp? Once I get the coles hot and going, I noticed that the temp is dropping pretty quickly. Do you use charcoal only or are you adding something extra to it?
    P.s I haven't used the smoker box yet

      @@RoadandReel thanks for your reply man.
      I am trying to keep it in grilling range. Around 300 to 350 but it creeps into smoke range 200-280 pretty quickly and slowly drops from there for about 30 or so minutes.
      I think I may have figured the issue was that I am not using enough charcoal and will switch from the quicklight expert grill charcoal to the actual Kingsford original tomorrow. I will also leave the gas one on closest to it as you suggested and see if that helps.
