  • In todays video I'm talking about Presonus Studio One 6.
This one feels a bit strange and even if we got a couple of great new features it doesn't live up to the "6" name.

Finally!!! A honest review. I spoke to someone who had an advance copy an knew what to expect. This was more a release for the shareholders not the user base. A release simply because they had to put something out. The video editor is a very welcomed edition and is the only reason I may upgrade.

A couple of things I like, e.g. Video functions, lyrics, dynamic EQ. I also agree it is an update, not an upgrade to a new version. I think that in the Presonus shop, it’s actually called an UPDATE. So, it’s not something Presonus ( or Fender) is unaware of.

You do it the wrong way ! Once you've set up your track in the arranger view with your own preferences, simply drag it with the mouse to the folder named 'Track Presets' in the open Studio One browser. From there, you can drag it back into any song with all the settings you previously configured.

You haven't understood the Track Presets feature. You need to "Load Track Preset" instead of "Apply Track Preset". It recalls everything, colors, all effects including the entire routing. "Apply..." just applies channelstrip settings. Also, saving and loading via drag'n'drop is way faster than with the dialog windows you use in your video.

You live in Germany and call your own country foreign? Weird!
And it's not a small DAW department at all, but originally a company bought by Presonus. And this company was founded by Mathias Juwan and Wolfgang Kundrus, who previously worked as leading developers at Steinberg (Cubase/Nuendo). Juwan also developed the VST3 standard. The company is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, the same city that is home to Steinberg. Furthermore, there is also a development department in the USA that works closely with the one in Germany. • @af4396
    @af4396 Před rokem +5

I think what's great about SO6 is that it's already a great DAW. These seem to be small changes (on the surface) that probably took some time to implement. If you look at the main features this time, the Panning updates, Fader Flip, UI customization, and especially the video integration probably took some time to get right without bugs and are more foundational updates. I believe that those are now out of the way, we will get more plug in and content updates in the lifespan of SO6.
The good thing is, Studio One is already a fantastic DAW. Yes, everyone has wishes they want to see implemented, but I know that they are all "cherry on top" kind of things. "Oh I want this niche feature from Cubase/Logic/Reaper" or whatever. Other DAWs, like Pro Tools you could say things like "I want proper MIDI editing and workflow". Abelton and Reason you could say "I want better audio editing/recording" features. These are BIG blindspots, and those DAWs obviously have their niche markets. Studio One is in that Logic/Cubase world that does almost everything right. Live analog band recording? Check. Composing for a film? Check. Has good plug in selection? Check. Good at audio editing? Check. Good at MIDI? Check. Usable Mixer? Check. etc.
I'm hoping to always see more improvements, but the good thing is there's nothing "big" that's missing, and it has a lot of unique features that other DAWs don't have, while having almost everything else as well with a good interface and execution of those features.

This update has some of the most requested features in Studio One. Stereo Pan integrated in the mixer (in the past it was frustrating to work with sends with the dual pan plugin). Now we have Follow Main Pan on sends. The fader flip is something that most pro tools users who now use Studio One wanted for years, it feels very diferent to automate sends with the fader. The way that eq3 works now is one of the most useful in any daw. The interface looks more polished, all this plus the good things you mentioned in the video, for me this update was very good and I’m pretty sure we’re going to get amazing things in the next Studio One 6 updates.

Regarding the rant section, I see multiple reasons why it might have been released early. First, the merger with Fender; second before Black Friday, and third before Christmas in USA. It does seem like there are a lot of additions that are above and beyond an incremental version 5 update. As far as video stuff, I bought Magix Movie Studio software years ago that speacilizes in that purpose for like $69. It can do multi camera videos and so much more and syncing the music in SO to the video. It even comes with it's own free recording software, which is ironic. So that feature is not impressive to me.

I was expecting maybe a live launcher like Ableton, especially since they put out the performance page. Also, the midi FX/plugins/instruments are way behind most other daws. The sampler needs an overhaul. And no resizable plugins and GUI in 2022? I’ve also had 2 crashes already. Toss in the bouncing ball Lyrics track, Fader Flip, Track notes and show active tracks under cursor and it will help me work faster and easier. Seems like a reasonable update.v If I could ask for one upgrade it would be to better take advantage of multicore systems. One thing I am noticing about the feedback to Studio One is that there are very distinct audiences, and that makes it very hard to please everyone. Like they're trying to cover so much ground. Personally, I am waaay more interested in the production side of things. Sound design, writing. Track templates make no sense to me, since what I would use them for is either already covered with song templates, or should be done with more intricate effect racks functionality.
On the other hand, I was suuuper excited about the plugin changes, especially the vocoder. I mean, that is obviously almost never a mixing tool, but it is a very important writing/production tool fopr contemporary music from pop/hip-hop songs to Colour Bass/Dubstep etc. The Pro EQ changes I would have been absolutely mental about, if I hadn't already bought the Slate Bundle for Inf EQ.
There's also this problem of attracting new users vs. keeping existing customers. Some people want Dolby Atmos more than anything, I personally couldn't care less about that.
The one thing I actually am mad about is the lack of a changelog you mentioned, which indicates to me, that stability and minor improvement probably weren't on the list. Further underpinned by the fact that version 6 doesn't even start on my main windows workstation. It does on MacOS though. I don't know...
For now. I am a Sphere subscriber and I'm closely monitoring the developments in the next minor versions. My feelings are very mixed. Like ... What I *wish* for are proper effect racks with automatable macros, improved sample browsing, automatable pitch shift. EDM production oriented stuff.
But in reality, what I might actually take my hat about and finally switch over to (probably) Bitwig is stability, bugs (especially concerning routing) and performance. We'll see what the future brings.

Totally agree and Studio One is my main daw, and because we like it the deception is bigger.
Don’t know if this is something related to it but the company was sold not long ago to an old guitar company, so not sure what to expect for the future. Certainly not the great hype content creator mindset with the sauce.
In the past I was using Digital Performer and they slowly got outperformed by delivering the same kind of updates.

I think that his intention with this features is to not go to the same rout as Cubase did in the last 12 years, adding more and more features that makes the daw and the workflow really complicated and frustrated for beginners. I think this was something necessary to have a more friendly looking DAW for the majority of the music production community. But I'm not gonna lie, I'm waiting some big features on many different funtions on the DAW. Let's see what they gonna give us this next 2 years.

Studio One user since v2, I use it exclusively for professional mixing since v4. I agree with everything you said. This release feels rushed. There are some cool new features and improvements but not polished enough and aimed more at amateur market. Mostly more clutter (track icons 🤣). And no bugfixes? Come on, Presonus. I'm good with v5.5.2, I'll see you when v6.5 drops.

Totally agree this isn’t a major update for me. This are just little gimmicks. I really love studio one but this was not necessary. Maybe some improvement for production would be nice. Like pre listening to the chord track in the chord circle. But ok we will see what’s coming next. Most disappointing is that the update from professional 5 to 6 cost 150 bucks.. like for this? No way I buy it anyway but cmon..

needs true multi channel support, higher order Ambisonics/ dolby support. Putting panning options in the track should have been done from the get go, like every other DAW. Most of these features seem like intermediate bug fixes and not paid upgrades. Video support is cool but could have been better, again multi channel audio for film production would have been the way to go. An Ambisonic tool kit would be awesome as well. As far as plug ins go, they need to update their reverbs for sure.

The goal with fender is to dumb down the DAW so everyone with no experience can use it. My problem is ITS ALREADY EASY to use. They are going to ruin a fantastic DAW so all can use it. Mercedes-Benz did the same thing. They were a top end classy car. Then they wanted everyone to be able to drive one. So they started making cheap versions of the car so everyone could experience a Mercedes-Benz. It lost its prestige after this. Studio one is not hard to use. Read the damn manual and watch tutorials and LEARN IT. No need for templates that basically make the song for you. Fender leave the DAW ALONE.

I'm sticking with Studio One Pro 5.5 for now because version 6 literally added nothing. Seems like Fender wanted to recoup some of the money they paid for Presonus by releasing version 6 which is nothing more than an updated version of 5.
