- In this video we turn a 55 gallon food grade barrel into an awesome smoker. We completed this build in one day and managed to cook on it as well. This build was a lot of fun and tested our speed when it comes to diy projects. Hope you enjoy and remember to GET OUT AND BUILD!!

Great video. Just a warning to anyone who wants to do this. Please make sure you fully clean out the drum before cutting into it. I knew a man and his son that were killed instantly when they went to cut into one. Flammable fumes were still in the barrel and when they cut into it, it exploded. Wash it thoroughly with soap and water and let it completely air dry and leave the fill cap off before cutting.
Or fill the barrel with water and leave it full while cutting
Also burn a few really hot fires in there before cooking any food.
Eish I was about to start my dyi project but this message just scared me a little bit. How do I clean it inside before cutting it?
Or put it in a burn pile with a hole in it
@@seramemoitshekilet water run in it for a while to push out any leftover gas or put it in a burn pile and let the leftover gases burn out
awesome job guys, very solid build, just is not a smoker , is more of a drum grill.smoking is indirect heat and smoke . again a very solid build is more of a direct heat grill.. awesome job on the build..is a job most any body could do at a cheap price kudos
A drum is a great smoker if used properly
A drum can be used as a vertical smoker but they have this one too hot so it’s more of a grill like you say
All they need to do is use some charcoal in the bottom and just chucks of wood for a lower temp smoke, maybe set up a removable plate to block the flames. It might need adjustable vents to better control the temps also
Oh shut the French toast up 🖕🏽
They didn’t use it correctly as a smoker. You’re not gonna run a smoker over 300° and have actual smoked food, more grilled at that point.
Great Father & Son Project and cannot help but salute you. Thank you for sharing. Take care and God Bless. ❤
My friend and I did this build yesterday with a few minor modifications. The video was our inspiration. Thank you.
We love getting comments like this. Glad you guys got out and built it. This was one of our most memorable projects!
@Father Son DIY Garage., I saw that the drum was made in Indonesia, I'm proud that the product has arrived in your country... I'm excited for you and dad to always create useful content, thank you.. greetings from Indonesia
Good job. I’ve made a couple of UDS’, if you added some air intake to the bottom it’ll run better. I drilled three 1” holes two inches from the bottom and welded a sliding “door” (flat bar) at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions. Unless the door is your air intake.
This should be renamed the hardest way to do a smoker
All of your videos are awesome! The smoker turned out great!
Grolsch, dutch beer in the nice very nostalgic bottle, tastes good also.
Great video and awesome beer choice!! Thanks guys
Wtg fellas! Can't wait to build one!
Didn't get a chance to do this with my dad... VERY Glad to see you two NAILED that cooker together!
Loved the Grolsch bottle! Nice build
That's fantastic. Awesome job. Enjoyed the video
Would be a killer smoker if there was some kind of defuser plate or water pan above the fire awsome build though
Thankfully someone else said it. This is a grill
excellent choice of beer! great video as well.
Love the teamwork!!
That’s what it’s all about!!!
Cool build! Great beer!
It's what we need in life
Loved this video, looks like it was a really long day but the payoff chicken thighs at the end look fantastic. 😀
I subscribed. I have an 85 gallon drum and the parts (hot pot, heating element, PID controller, auger, motor) to turn it into a pellet smoker so that's the project over Christmas break.
good job guys, cheers from Thailand
Grolsch!
Drank many of those in Germany.
Cool build. I'm gonna do one with a few minor changes.
Thanks for the ideas.
Peace!
Hello from 🇷🇴 România! Love your project ❤❤❤
All the experts here in the comments. Imma be one and say I'd love that. Like a pit cooker, grill, and if you smother the flame, smoker. I'd cook on that all the time. Mmmm... Slow cook..
Awesome job !!!!congratulations 🫢🤫🔴
Earned yourself another sub. Love the chemistry!
Great video gents!
well done!!!
Awesome job keep this content going!
Great Build
Soon as I open the video I knew you knew what you were doing by seeing that pair of moc toes you had on.
Amazing build
I just finish DIY smoke maker
next is to buy barrel and install cold smoke maker.
I like what you did… the only thing I would have done differently is instead of the basket I would have put a removable grate like you did for your cooking surface. But that my own personal opinion. Love what you did, keep up the good work!
How would that contain the fire where the basket holds the coal in one place ?
Really cool.
Reverse engineering is awsome!
I subscribed 👍 I like it, very simple and very effective. Good job guys.
Make a smoke box from an old steel ammo can. Lie the can on it’s side. Drill a few 6-8mm holes in a row 2cm up from the ‘new’ top and bottom. Put a few easy light briquettes inside and light them, then shut the lid once they get going. Sprinkle some wood chips of your choice on the top and it will generate plenty of smoke.
Alright boys, looks like your channel is off to a good start.
I love how it comes full circle for me, I am Indonesian and looking for a DIY drum smoker video. Found a few Indonesian videos but I don't quite trust anything Indonesian. So I went to look for an English video (because higher quality standards for product, video, audio, and materials). Little did I know until 10mins in that the drum is Indonesian of origin. But hey, at least it's food grade!
The Indonesian ones are literally made from rusted petrol drums. Yum, extra carcinogens.
“Pop” the thigh joint on the chicken (Colonel Sanders’s requirement on KFC) and it will cook better in the joint. Hardly any chicken chain now knows this tip.
8:47 The one who measured the basket that didn't fit... Fail Army Vet! 😉
Man thats awesome work
Thank you!!!!
I think rural king may sell them. Thanks
Can you make an Offset smoker that looks like a choo-choo Train? I think if you have a square fire box, and then put a big square box above that for roasting with, you would be pretty close to the right shape. Then you just need big wheels and some trim
You should have a heat shield between the fire and the meat if you want to bring this to the next level.
The whole point of drum smokers is for the fat to drip off the meat into the fire adding more flavor
@Hyper Wolfe that's how you create that black sm9ke you don't want.
more than perfect great job guys👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌👌💯💯💯💯++
Hey fellas, GREAT TUTORIAL. I'm wondering about your welding cart there...looks like u used some corner steel and 4 casters. Got a plan or video for that? Even as a general shop item, that's super useful. Love how you got the vice screwed into it as well. I can weld but it's been awhile (since High School) but I can remember the basics. I have access to an arc welder and disc cutter too.
We plan on doing a video on how to make one. It’s a build every welder should do when starting out. We plan on making a bigger one in the near future
Super bien les gars, simple et efficace je garde l'idée pour le faire aussi ici en France, merci pour le partage et bonne continuation les gars. Cordialement Bruno
Subscribed. Great content and production quality. Keep the vids coming please.
We appreciate it. Thanks for watching we love making these videos! What kind of build would you like to see in the future?
@@fathersondiygarage3580 A piggybacked barrel would be cool for some sort of wood pellet set up. Ive also seen some done with propane regulators lighting off flavored wood chips. I do tons of jerky super low and slow is what its all about.
Thank You guys.
I would like to ask for an advice. I also made a diy smoker using a barrel, we tried to burn it but it did not blackened as yours. Now since the barrel was use for perfume storage, there are still lingering scent of perfume that i know would stick to the meat if i used it for smoking. What are the things i could do to remove all the perfume scent?
Awesome
Where did you get the rack?
That chicken looks raw
I was scrolling down the comments just to see if anyone noticed that 😂
Drum made in indonesia,, good good
Subscribed! Keep going guys :)
Working on our next smoker build as we speak!!!
Question - for the grill grate.. what kind of metal is it made of? Im reading there are quite a few metals that cant be used because of toxicity?
so no zink gal. less u burn it off in open fire b4 use. try not to weld gold looking bolts too less u hold ur breath. saying that human are ment to die sometime and bbqing is carcinogenic anyway. thin blue smoke for bbq not thick white utube how to run a smoker box
I subscribed... nice info.... Thank you
How do you empty the fire cage with the thermometer probe sticking in?
Pull it out o. K.
Build a smoker, and cook, and melt the wheels right off, all in the same day.
Lol next time we go with cast iron wheels!

No deflector plates?

I subscribed, I came looking for a DIY self sufficient meat keeper walk in cool room .instead I found a new project the smoker to add to the list of things to build on our homestead 😂😂 Nice work I’ll be back for the next video you guys Do for sure .
Hey quick question i build it one my self but after a little bit the coals go dead for no oxygen what is a tip that i can do
Leave the bottom door open or drill some holes in the barrel near the bottom
I subscribed today chilling at my home in Miami Florida
Thanks fellas 👌
Subscibed! Going to make one soon bc smoking food is life!
What is that brown coating on the inside? Is that paint? I'm doing this soon and I'm just afraid of the paint being poisonous. Barrel used to have fruit puree in
Super cool! Where did you get the barrel? I’d love to try this out.
Got the barrel on offer up!
Frikkin cool guys
I can see that building a smoker is more work than a bbq because it has to be sealed so that smoke can’t get out. I cannot make it… I need to buy one. Thank yiu
How do you clean the ash out of that, just turn it upside down?
I Subscribed!!
Where to you find these food grade drums?
I subscribed…!
I subscribed. 👊
What machine you used to cut the bar for the wheels ?
Bandsaw
Yum i want bbq now😂
Get rid of the basket and make the door flush with the bottom for clean outs. Makes it that much cheaper
Nice job I've a question how much did you charge to do that job
We ended up keeping this build, probably cost around $175
I subscribed and liked
yes
are the edges of the barrel razor sharp where you cut the lid ? do you just grind them down ?
We sanded the edges down so it wouldn’t be sharp
I love made in Indonesia ..
Subbed
Grolsch nice going
I'll check the feed store.
I subscribed.
you the man!!!!

how u guys cut the door? you could just bolt hinges right?
Yeah you can bolt hinges we just decided to weld some on
What sort of welding did you use for this??
stick
Need a good drip tray so you don't have direct heating.
Takes away all the flavor of a direct heat smoker
I subscribed. Question do you build the cooking racks for the 55 gal drum smoker?
A big brake drum from a truck makes a long lasting charcoal basket.
That’s a great idea I’ll have to give it a shot
Bro it would be to heavy
What size was the basket… dimensions?
👍🏼
id feel alot happier with a rebar / rod under that mesh so it didnt fall in off them tab
Great idea, will have to use that for the next build
That was could, would like to see some sort of heat deflector though. Purely so i know what material you use lol
Grolsch is king
