  • Episode 12: Bad Habits that can damage your kidneys, lead to chronic kidney disease, kidney problems, or kidney failure. These bad habits can damage your kidneys and cause symptoms of kidneys crying for help and should be avoided and discussed with your doctors. You can improve your kidney health, increase kidney function, prevent kidney problems, avoid kidney failure, slow the loss of kidney function, or stop chronic kidney disease progression by stopping these bad habits and adding foods that are good for your overall health in your renal diet. For those with a soy allergy, be mindful of soy in your food due to inflammation. Make certain to work closely with YOUR doctors and a renal dietitian - they are your best resource for kidney care tips for your specific situation and health.
How to improve Kidney Health, Beat CKD, and Avoid Dialysis Playlist: • Kidney Disease Reversa...
For those who already have Chronic Kidney Disease, it is important to protect your kidney health and kidney function to avoid kidney failure. Avoiding these bad habits for kidney health is just one step of how to prevent kidney failure and kidney damage. Preventing kidney failure and kidney damage also requires eating a kidney-friendly renal diet and living a kidney-friendly healthy lifestyle (a renal dietitian can help you here, especially if you are like me and have food allergies). Please note - there is no 1 diet for everyone, working with a renal dietitian to customize your diet is one of the best things you can do for your health.
When you see signs of kidney disease or have symptoms of kidney problems you CAN take action to prevent further kidney damage or slow down the progression. Signs of kidney problems does not guarantee you will develop chronic kidney disease. Patients with Chronic kidney disease or kidney failure symptoms do not always require dialysis. Lifestyle and diet changes can help to slow down, stop, or reverse kidney damage and treat symptoms of kidney failure.

I am 81.5 years old Male. I am eating lamb, chicken 9 times per week I.e., 7 days plus Friday and Sundays at lunch. Recently I under went regular Medical checkups with Nephrologist and Dr. on seeing my Xray he said my kidneys are perfectly well. Upto 50 or 70 years of age I was drinking 3 litres of water. From 70 onwards I have restricted to 1.2 to 1.6 liters. I get up one time at midnight to pass urine. I take a morning walk 6 days in a week for one hour covering 4 kms. I am not diabetic. My friends say that I look like 60 years old. 😁

This is really great advice and your story is INSPIRING. I just want to add the ONE THING that a lot of people tend to overlook and that could make all the difference. CKD is a silent disease. I see a lot of patients waiting YEARS before getting checked for kidney function because they don't see any symptoms. The problem is that CKD doesn't have symptoms until it is TOO LATE... so if you have any risk factor, don't wait! get checked people

I was on hemodialysis for about a year and got a kidney transplant on November 29th, 2017 and I was only 17 to 18 years old. I hope more people talk about this especially in a serious matter like him. So far I found none on the internet except for this youtube video because they just don't mention it and it makes feel very alone and embarrassed for the cause of my kidney failure so thanks to this guy for talking about this especially in a serious matter.

Eating cabbage is good for your kidneys ! I learn about it on a doctor's video . I had damaged my left kidney with extreme & prolonged dehydration . Which caused a 1 cm kidney stone . Which then caused a kidney infection . Which caused a blood infection . Which almost killed me . I was looking for ways to heal my kidney . So I began adding cabbage to my lunch every work day . When I had my next doctor visit , my doctor was both very pleased and surprised had my test results . They indicated that my kidneys were healing much faster and functioning much better then she had anticipated !

My poor sister and everyone on it. I felt so bad for them. Only 32 oz of clear liquids a day. No beans not even green beans. And so much other stuff she couldn't eat. We met another guy there that drank Dr Pepper only and the nurse said they got a few every 6 or 8 months. I was off that quick. After you get off sodas and taste one later it taste like syrup. I did just like you and researched the crap out of what helps kidney function and improved them on my own. Now I'm dealing with a low white blood cell count. I asked the doctor is there anything I can take to improve this and she looked dead in my face and said unfortunately no and added I wish there was. From experience I knew not to accept the first thing they say so I went right away and did se research and found about 50 foods and supplements that improve or raise wbc. Point is you gotta take care of your own self in addition to going to doctor. I really just use doctors as check ups ro get my levels read then go home and fix myself. I take their advice but add my own stuff to it. Thanks for this video. I actually didn't learn anything new but I appreciate that you are informing others.

4 lack of sleep get 8 hours
5 Watch the painkillers. Don't overuse. Don't use if possible.
6 Excessive caffeine is not good limit it to one or two cups
7 low protein. Preferable non animal as it's hard on kidneys. Non soy as it can raise blood pressure.

Dad.. I have a serious question please. I've been looking into all of this for the past 6 months (for my step son and general info for just in case!) and came across Dr. Jason Fung, the nephrologist. He's big on reversing diabetes with Intermittent Fasting and a keto diet. Here's where my question comes in. You mentioned too much protein and animal protein being a big problem. What do you think about the whole keto advice then for helping kidney disease? These are the times I get so confused. Thanks in advance for any response you give.

So glad to hear that! When I was diagnosed my Nephrologist told me I had "Zero" chance of getting better, dialysis was my only option. It felt great to prove her wrong, and to do it so quickly was even better. As long as you can manage the underlying cause of your CKD to prevent further damage, diet and lifestyle changes can greatly slow down, halt, or even reverse the loss of kidney function. Thanks again and good luck!!!

Love this advice but you missed a HUGE factor--SUGAR! and mindlessly eating junk food! Donuts, chips, cupcakes--"comfort foods". Im eliminating "added sugar" foods PLUS all junk foods with one cheat per week. One donut, one cookie. I've lost 8 lbs in about 8 weeks and am so proud of myself! I'm looking to lost 15 more lbs which will also bring my BMI below 30. I have had Stage 3 kidney disease for at least 5 years--but not one doc that I saw told me that in plain English! I found out BY ACCIDENT about 2 months ago at a return visit (from LAST JUNE!!!) to the PA I had seen. She mentioned it VASUALLY as she was reading off of her iPad, from HER notes, but that info wasn't in the chart info that I could view. WTH???!! So when I got home that day, I googled it and began to understand what I was faced with. Not grim, but not good either. Longer story short, I made my own appt with a nephrologist and went right over the PAs head. She never even recommended that I see one yet. Just sent me home with a paper that said stay away from nsaids (been off them for 5 years now, but the damage is done) and try the Mediterranean diet. That was it! The nephrologist was very informative and I'm so glad we had a consultation. Don't wait for a doc to refer you--insist on it as soon as possible to educate yourself, ease your mind, and give you a launching point from which to dive into better kidney health.
I work alone, so I can listen to an assortment of videos like this. Sometimes info can be contradictory but I find that eventually I figure out what makes the most sense and use that.
    Good luck all!

There are different views on water intake, TCM says: less, for people woith good calmnes without stressing around. And ther is a difference betwee drinking watre and getting it into one's cells.. Help with mItochondia by natural dr/ therapist might be good.

It's the way Drs are now trained. Not to heal but to manage with medication. & they don't talk to patients anymore. You HAVE TO ask as many questions as you can. And be proactive, research everything. Your illness, your meds, your healthcare, the laws pertaining to healthcare! Research it all.

Yes you’re right to do your own research & do all that you can to stay healthy. It’s so important. It’s your body you know what it needs & it doesn’t need the stresses of life so keep a positive attitude. Above all, connect with good friends. You can do it.

EXCELLENT!!!! I know quite a bit about kidney disease, my father had it for years. And what you said is excellent!!!
He lived to be 92. His GFR was getting worse as the years went by. But because we changed his diet, etc he never had to go on dialysis. I was happy to see your video and that you are not misleading anyone looking for help. As you probably already know there are lots of CZcamsrs out there who don't have a clue what they're talking about. Thank you so much for this important video!! 😊

Thank you Rick. GFR 59 is stage 3, so work on your diet and lifestyle changes to stay at Stage 2 (or even move up to Stage 1). If you have Diabetes or high blood pressure, work with your doctor to manage those and stop any further kidney damage. Diet can make a world of difference - I've now gone from Stage 5 to Stage 3 in just 5 months with diet and lifestyle changes.

I learned in 2005 that my GFR was 26 (bad...it should be over 60). I’ve used advice on DaVita and Kidney Foundation (same as your advice). Now my GFR is 48. Pay attention to what Dadvice says?

Quit smoking and drinking and then I gained weight. Food taste better. My blood pressure is high. Take meds to control it.3 years ago my doctor told me I was a prediabetic so I went on self control diet and have added test to do Last week I was a 5.4 normal range. If I do this for 7 years I'd be diabetes free!

Stay away from sugar and anything that contains sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc., etc. such as bread, pastry, ketchup, dressings, sodas, anything sweet, also starchy foods like potatoes, and pasta, to much of these things only lead to diabetes.
