When I go to cemeteries to clean relatives' graves, I sometimes wander around and pull back the growth on long forgotten ones and clean them up a bit and literally say the person's name, wondering how long it's been since their name was actually spoken out loud on Earth.
I thought the samething,There is a movie about witch who was buried under rocks an a tree, storm came an split the tree in turn releasing the witch once more
You, know half of the people they called witches, they were midwives and knew about medicinal herbs, and some were very well off, financially, A , lot of men saw that and did not like it, So they made up some story that she was a witch , in order to get their land.
A witch's path revolves around NATURE. They are not evil as the Christians protray us. It doesn't surprise me that a tree is growing where she lays. The connection between the craft & nature is unbreakable. Bless her soul. So mote it be.
I know. Imagine how he stops vandals. I guess their bodies are never found. There's a columnbarium in Alabama that I frequent that is guarded by wasps, black widows and scorpions. And me and the landowners thrive on it. Not every event can be caught on camera. We get extra security. They get a safe place to live.
In eauropean cultures a black dog or a dog knows as a grave yard dog was said to be a omen that you or a loved one was soon to pass and the dog is a spirit who helps the restless souls after being buried and gives them company while they make their jeourny to the other side
Someone loved Maude dearly. A grave that is a tree trunk that has been cut at the top is symbolic of a life cut short. at 14 years old (dying and probably being buried near her 15th birthday), I'm sure it was a very grievous blow to the family.
Quite common for that type of marker to be used for high ranking members of "Woodmen of the World" also. An old cemetery near me that was recovered had a large number of those.
Hawthorne is a tree used in preventing witchcraft as well as used for magical purposes in England and Scotland. Makes sense it would be planted on a grave of someone suspected of practicing witchcraft.
They just don't make grave markers like they used to..I absolutely love the epitaphs on them. Little Maude's is beautiful but very sad...it makes me wonder what happened to her. Another beautiful adventure. ❤
Such a beautiful place. As a mum, Maudes' epitaph made me cry. That dog was adorable. Really hope you can come back to this one. Thank you from Australia. Stay safe please!
Charlie Shellhouse was just 22 years old. He worked as a logger and was killed when a log fell on him while he was unloading the truck. He was the oldest of four sons.
"Maude's Little Hands" reminded me of the song "Grandma's Hands" by Bill Withers who died a week ago today. His song is covered by many artists. You can hear his song on CZcams. Here, I never thought of hands in the remembrance of one so young. Art has such beauty and range. Bravo!
Beautiful cemetary, loved seeing the furry little guardian 🐾💛 & as for the alleged " witch " she was a human being above all and deserves to be honored as such . Thank you so much for ur adventures and respect for the dead truly appreciated
Thank you for the woodman's stone with carvings. I saw one up in around Oneida, NY years ago. The date on the tomb was born 1750 death 1825, and other old tomb stones with chiseled markings on them dating back to the mid 1700's. The family generations from way back fought in the Indian Wars before the 13 Colonies were ever born. Their family is English stock and now mixed with American. Am proud of this family because they still have a large family and keeping up with the traditions of their forefather's. Am still proud now, cause I just spoke to one of the great great great great great grandchildren of this family. I love history, and they had plenty of it. Sidestep, you do a wonderful work by looking into these old cemeteries. One day, they will all be emptied. Cause the Lord, promised he would bring them all back on earth once the earth has been cleansed from all wickedness and plagues. And his Kingdom (or government) will rule from Heaven over the earth! What a blessing that will be to see these first pioneers of this new land.
Another beautiful and peaceful cemetery. The dog is like the caretaker, he’s just making sure everything is ok. Love it when you find out stories that go with the cemeteries you visit. As always, look forward to the next one. Xx
That’s our family’s church, the grave with cover wanted to be buried in the shade is the story we were always told. Shellhouse, Hilton, and Rigsby are our families, probably others.
Such interesting surnames. The British meaning of Lew is a place of shelter. So there's a Buckhouse, a Shellhouse, and Hilton is like a great big house and a Rig is a horse-drawn wheeled vehicle for carrying passengers to the various houses. Sounds like a fun community.
Maude must have benn so loved... R.I.P. to her, and to whoever held her dear enough to write such kind words. Thank you for sharing your spoils of your explorations. Cemetaries and graveyards are so human, and so easy to overlook.

Me too, but I bet she had some what of a since of what was to come , ole folks didn’t like that , I don’t remember how old he was. , but my grandfather did . The people use to make accusations about him .
He was a sweet doggy . He was loving the attention . Those were some old graves for sure . It's sad to see them falling apart , but you can tell that they were once beautiful headstones and markers . The witch grave was spooky . It looked like some of the rocks were burned . I remember there used to be an old tell about a woman in Hall county Ga. and people said she was a witch . This reminded me of that . Some people would go to her for "medicines " and to have their fortunes told . I knew a woman that wanted a baby so much , so she went to visit the witch . The witch told the woman that she would go on a trip and she told her some different things to do while on this trip with her husband . So the woman did what the witch told her to do and sure enough the woman and her husband finally got pregnant and had a little girl . I don't remember all of the things she said she had to do while on the trip , but I do know that while they were on their trip they did get pregnant . lol !! I don't really believe it all that witch stuff , but I do believe in old timey remedies for medicines . I think that God put things on this earth to help us no doubt . I believe those things got handed down from generations to generations and if a old woman was using these remedies.... they were accused of being witches. Some might really have been practicing evil things and those are the scary ones that I .....for one don't care to fool with . Yikes !! I'll stick with God's word . 👍😊🙏 Thanks for sharing your video !! Take care and God bless . Hope you and your family have a Happy Easter !!
I thought some of the rocks looked burned too, so maybe it wasn't a grave at all. Maybe it was a chimney that got knocked down. Could've been from the 1st church on the site, maybe.
I thought the same thing. It might have been just a small group of people that thought she was a witch and placed the stones after she was buried. Poor woman was probably a widow that lived alone.
I thought it might have been a chimney from an old building that got knocked down and was never hauled off. It's weird that there'd only be one like that, and you're right that they probably wouldn't have buried a witch on church grounds. (He did say there was a church, right?)
I think you're right. My understanding is that the church would not allow for witches or other heretics to be buried in a churchyard (graveyard). That's why we have cemeteries.
The headstone for Maude was pretty sad. She was only 15 years old when she died. It would be interesting who is buried under that pile of rocks. That she was a witch might just be a tale that cropped up over the years. There might be some public records about who it is. It's pity there's no headstone. It could be that it was someone who had no family and was too poor to afford a headstone. At the very least, she was a human being.
Hello Robert, I went visiting cemeteries last week and I picked up and straightened up tombstones that had fallen down. I have one more to fix it is a very tall monument that has fallen off the base I'm going to level up the base and take a tripod and block and tackle to lift it up.. gonna be hard to do buddy
My Father always said respect the dead. For whatever you do to them that shall be done to you. Although our soul & spirit departs from our body the memorial of your existence is undeniable for you once lived but now lay with the expired.
Much enjoyed and little Maude's poem on her marker. So many children died back in the day! I've seen Mother and Father markers with a row of five or six small stones of their children. Thank You Kindly for sharing your journeys into our ancestors and our history! Love, Light, Peace, Health and Safe Journeys! DaveyJO in Pa.
Great video Robert. Had everything , a friendly dog, a witch and cool history of time past. Maude died 11 days before her 15th bday. Beautiful epithet. Thanks for video.
Near where I live there is a baby's grave made and carved from marble!! So beautiful!!! It's a baby's bed and there's an indent in the pillow,. and the blanket is turned back! No writing use your imagination!!!!!!
Thanks for your kindness toward the dog. You have an on looker always. Also I have gone to cemeteries to visit friends and family and I do clean the site and pick up trash. God Bless and continue safe travels
Awww such a friendly trusting doggy 🐶 we all need doggy love right now to help lessen the stress. So many little ones there also and Maudes inscription made me tear up for the parent who wrote that.
What's better than a dog? Sitting in a lawn chair near the cemetery with a cooler full of beer hanging out with the dog and waiting for a witch to come out of that grave and scare the shit out of someone standing by her grave. Then have the dog look at ya with that "I told you so" look. LOL
I love walking through old cemeteries. I visited a very old cemetery outside Sharon Springs, KS a few years back. It's full of old pioneers and civil war volunteers, during that time period.
Aww, what a beautiful dog! That "not so bright" grave looks dangerous. I wonder if Maude's grave was designed to hold water? It definitely would've looked so elegant when it was erected. Very sad if that is a grave of a suspected witch. Hopefully at peace.
The witch's grave? Probably an old woman who was knowledgeable in traditional medicines and treated the locals. Perhaps she was African American and esteemed in her own community as a wise woman and somehow came to be buried there. Hence, the peculiar but ancient tradition of a rock-covered grave. God bless her soul and give her peaceful rest.
There are people today who consider themselves "witches" but are not the evil kind we normally think about on Halloween. These witches attain their "power' in the spirituality of Nature, not unlike many indigenous peoples. Their pagan beliefs are known as Wicca..
@Steven Mathew's "Considered" and proven in a court of law are two very different things. It is unbiblical to condemn someone on hearsay or suspicion, yet our religious history in America has been plagued with fearful individuals and groups that seek to vilify that which they either do not understand or that they mistake for wrongful practice.
Love seeing your videos. I miss my Georgia home. That Church and cemetery looks like the one my Dad and his family is are buried at. They are around Berlin . There are two Cemeteries about five miles apart that our family is laid to rest at.
She was old enough to be married in those days!!! I can't imagine anyone in that era expecting to live to an ripe old age with so many dying at 40 or younger!! She was almost middle aged!!!
I would love to see this one again seems there could be many stories there ! As for the witch I'm sure they thought she was but many were just healers that ppl were afraid of it's ashame because ppl nkiw are going back to the natural medicines these ppl made an d many are making their own God Bless Be Safe Love d that dog ! 🐾🐕💖🙏😇✝️🐇❤️🇺🇸
A crown on a tombstone, whether an engraving or the whole stone, represents the glory of life after death and the deceased's ascension into heaven. It also may mean immortality, victory and righteousness
The dog reminded me of a true event. At one of our local cemeteries an old man and his dog lived next to this cemetery. The old man died and was buried in the cemetery next to his home. One of his children took the dog to care for it but every day the dog would go to the cemetery and lay on his masters grave. The dog wouldn't eat and soon it died also. How did that dog know that his master, buried within a sealed concrete vault, know his master rested there?
Sounds like an adaptation of Grayfriars Bobby. A Graveyard in Edinburgh Scotland. Local lore said he lived by his masters grave till the dog too passed. There is a memorial to him there. In reality, a grave yard is a good place for them to find food and not be bothered.
I read a story about a French Bulldog in Indiana who did the same thing. Might be an interesting new urban legend..who knows? Dogs are loyal and the best of God's creatures! 🐶🥰
As a find-'a-grave member, an opportunity to photograph all headstones and put them on the website. There's so many cemeteries that are lost , never to be found. And family who aren't able to travel or even find some of these places, you're already there! Just a suggestion??
Greetings fellow cemetery/genealogy nerds! Love these videos...and loved seeing the sweet pupper who came to visit. If anyone is interested, there's a book I'd like to recommend titled "Your Guide to Cemetery Research" by Sharon DeBartolo Carmack. It has helpful information for genealogists AND people who love to visit cemeteries. Happy Easter!
That is a beautiful cemetery. Those headstones are amazing esp the poem. The story behind the field stone grave is interesting. What a cool dog. Keep Safe❤Keep Well❤
you said it's an old church graveyard that means connected ground they would never barry a witch in the connected ground. The witch's grave looks like an older style grave, not from someone wanting to keep a witch down you got to think about this all the other graves have a large slab over the top what to prevent that from happing what your showing,me mean's is the water table is high so to prevent the coffin or as what is called today the casket from coming up from the ground they would place a heavy stone on top they would do that also to prevent animals from getting into the grave for food that is what that is about. Also you, Robert, I hope y'all a great day and to your family have a great and healthy easter Peace Out
Definitely one of my favorite videos you've done! The stonework is amazing. I'd love to hear your friends family history here. The folklore is very cool.
I very much enjoyed this episode. I love and look forward to all your postings. It's so obvious how much your care about your local history and preserving the past for future generations. I am always amazed by the famous Red Georgia earth we see as you forage out these cemetery plots and homesteads long forgotten. I along with many are fascinated with the Early American and Civil War history that Georgia has. I loved the Dog in this episode. Large like a wolf in comparison to the lady pictured with him. Collies and German Shepards are large like that and sweet like this one was. Thank you, for keeping us entertained and educated during these Isolation Days.
No matter how beloved we are, those who care for our graves must pass too and eventually the graves themselves decay, despite being of stone. It simply underscores my belief that we are not that important. Some of the world's greatest leaders graves have been lost to time. I only hope there is truly an afterlife, because life it way too short, but I doubt it, really do.
What a very nice dog. That was a very nice cemetery, interesting headstones. Never saw ones that look like trees. I don't think that person was a witch, the town would not have buried here in thier cemetery if that what they really thought. Nice video Robert, Thanks
All this free advertising wearing my shirt I am going to owe you a 6 pack 😉 Haha! Very interesting video! I know where a supposed Vampire is buried here! We need to check it out!
A beautiful graveyard. Some beautiful headstones. Some beautiful words. A beautiful day and a beautiful German Shepherd. Simply beautiful 🌿🌹🌿 I have never seen a grave like the Witch's grave. I have to say though, its beautiful in its own way. 🌿🌹🌿
You do travel to some of the coolest places. Thank you for doing this, I find it welcoming distraction from what is going on around the world. Thanks again
First of all, I adore these videos! As a fellow southerner I see old stones all the time and appreciate you all keeping their names and themselves “alive”. Especially for those who may have no living relatives. Secondly, Jno is an abbreviation for the name variations of John or Jonathon (ie Jon, Jonothan, John James, etc). Hope that helps! :)
Nice video, the dog is so friendly, that dog loved you. I think I like to be buried in Georgia. I'm in Florida, elevation is too low. The old graves back then were so decorative.
While doing genealogy research, I've also seen it as an abbreviation for John. Strange how they put the o after the n, but they did many things differently back then.
I love stories, like that makes you think, who, what why,and where, but never to know, so fascinating to me and so peaceful there as well and beautiful. Great video Robert!
We too have witch graves here in New England area. I’ve been to one so far. And it’s very haunted by the witch!. Just because she is blocked into her grave don’t mean she can’t mess with electric devices or even mess with you while your there.
Maude’s little hands I miss them so,
All through the day wherever I go,
All through the night how lonely it seems,
For no little hands wake me out of my dreams.
I miss them all through the weary hours,
I miss them as others do sunshine and flowers.
Daytime or nighttime, wherever I go,
Maudes little hands I miss them so.

I do the same sometimes. I wonder when the last time a family member, or a friend came along to visit their grave
About the "witch", she's getting the last laugh because she's rising from her grave as a newly formed tree. 😝 Take that, old superstitions!
I was thinking the same thing she has come back as that tree
I thought the samething,There is a movie about witch who was buried under rocks an a tree, storm came an split the tree in turn releasing the witch once more
Actually Amish and Quakers believe planting a tree on a cursed person grave will trap their soul as long as the tree doesn't die.
You, know half of the people they called witches, they were midwives and knew about medicinal herbs, and some were very well off, financially, A , lot of men saw that and did not like it, So they made up some story that she was a witch , in order to get their land.

I love the poem. Those were beautiful words from the heart of a grieving mama.
What a gorgeous dog.
The tree growing out from the rocks is Hawthorne wich is known as the Witches Tree ! xx
The more you know
Hawthorne is a tree used in preventing witchcraft as well as used for magical purposes in England and Scotland. Makes sense it would be planted on a grave of someone suspected of practicing witchcraft.
Maybe records in the church ❓❓🤔🤷♀️🤷♀️🇦🇺
I think that beautiful loving dog is the Keeper of the Garden of Stones. Great video!
They just don't make grave markers like they used to..I absolutely love the epitaphs on them. Little Maude's is beautiful but very sad...it makes me wonder what happened to her. Another beautiful adventure. ❤

Midwives were considered Witches ☠🤔
Finally a Christian that isn't thrashing on witches. You can believe what you want on if their real or not. Witch or not we're all human.
Pretty sure if she was considered a Witch, she wouldn't be buried in consecrated ground. but I am no expert . Cool vid.

Great video Robert. Had everything , a friendly dog, a witch and cool history of time past. Maude died 11 days before her 15th bday. Beautiful epithet. Thanks for video.
aaaw that doggy is so cute .
He seemed lonely and was looking for some affection.
It felt good to see you holding him and showing him some love.
Near where I live there is a baby's grave made and carved from marble!! So beautiful!!! It's a baby's bed and there's an indent in the pillow,. and the blanket is turned back! No writing use your imagination!!!!!!
Wow a witch grave sight .that is kind of cool looking .
"Gonna look around " - stays put and gives doggy love
Beautiful graveyard.Thank you Robert.stay safe
Hey, Jno is the English abbreviation for 'John"
I was always of the understanding that Jno. was for Jonathan.
Jno = John & Jon = Jonathan
Johannes
or Jonathan. I found Jno a lot in genealogical research of this time frame and earlier
Johannes
Thanks for your kindness toward the dog. You have an on looker always. Also I have gone to cemeteries to visit friends and family and I do clean the site and pick up trash. God Bless and continue safe travels
Beautiful views some great "post card" moments shown. I think the dog was happy to have some human interaction lol
Awww such a friendly trusting doggy 🐶 we all need doggy love right now to help lessen the stress. So many little ones there also and Maudes inscription made me tear up for the parent who wrote that.
He is a lovely dog, you must love dogs too, thank you for another adventure, take care and stay safe, EVE X
I love this Videos and Whats better then a Dog he or she is Beautyfull
Cool dog
What's better than a dog? Sitting in a lawn chair near the cemetery with a cooler full of beer hanging out with the dog and waiting for a witch to come out of that grave and scare the shit out of someone standing by her grave. Then have the dog look at ya with that "I told you so" look. LOL
Thank you the respect that is in your heart for the passing of others
I love walking through old cemeteries. I visited a very old cemetery outside Sharon Springs, KS a few years back. It's full of old pioneers and civil war volunteers, during that time period.
No way I'd walk through that's disrespect to the deceased don't mess with stuff if you don't have knowledge
That doggy is very well taken care of! His coat is so clean and tangle free. Hard to do with a long haired dog in the spring!!!
Beautiful old cemetery. Interesting stones. Love the epitaphs.
Dog: sup welcome to my grave. you are welcome here
The OD was more likely Laudnum, which was basically liquid opium.
Great story. Love the dog.
Aww, what a beautiful dog!
That "not so bright" grave looks dangerous.
I wonder if Maude's grave was designed to hold water? It definitely would've looked so elegant when it was erected.
Very sad if that is a grave of a suspected witch. Hopefully at peace.
Thank you so much for posting these videos. They are so interesting and informative.
Or maybe she was a witch!!! They did exist then, as the do now!!! Expand your thinking!!!
@@davidplain3162 I'm a witch. What of it?
There are people today who consider themselves "witches" but are not the evil kind we normally think about on Halloween. These witches attain their "power' in the spirituality of Nature, not unlike many indigenous peoples. Their pagan beliefs are known as Wicca..
@Steven Mathew's Judge not lest ye be judged, for it is by these judgments that ye shall be judged.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and Healthy .🙏🏼 love from BO&MO Paranormal EXPLORERS from the Netherlands 🇳🇱❤️😘
Maude -- 15 years old. Like every adolescent, she expected to live forever. Tragic.
She was old enough to be married in those days!!! I can't imagine anyone in that era expecting to live to an ripe old age with so many dying at 40 or younger!! She was almost middle aged!!!
ALMOST 15. I think 11 days shy of her birthday?
@@davidplain3162 yes & I also believe that if they weren't married by 16 they were labeled "Old Maids"... it's sad she lost her life so young.
The Dog was awesome. Surely was friendly. What a pleasant treat to have a friend visit in the cemetery. LOL
Wow
Some animals have a Keen sense of smell....
@@GingerKraut Absolutely! Dogs are the best.
Very Interesting love history tons of good Wonderful stories
I loved the peacefulness of this scene. Hearing the birds and insects in the background brought back so many memories!
As a find-'a-grave member, an opportunity to photograph all headstones and put them on the website. There's so many cemeteries that are lost , never to be found. And family who aren't able to travel or even find some of these places, you're already there! Just a suggestion??
Such an interesting cemetery. I look forward to your explorations.
Wow beautiful cemetery. Thanks for an amazing video. I'm glad I found your channel.
Also you, Robert, I hope y'all a great day and to your family have a great and healthy easter Peace Out
Dogs, Truely Are Mans Best Friend..Stay Safe...
🙏🏽❤️I don’t Jesus lives. Will pray for you God bless
Jesus lives my friend
Merry Bliss Parsons of our family was tried in the Salem witch trials was found not gilty but was hurrassed the rest of her life
My family left Salem right after the trials started.
All those who were killed during the Salem trials have been exonerated.
Love that dog! Very interesting stones, I particularly liked Maudes.
This was amazing. Thank you for showing this. And all you do. Keep safe. Prayers sent. Thank you again.
Love the birds in the background, cool tombstones. Each grave has a story to tell, especially that witch’s grave. Thank you for this. ❤️ 🇵🇭
This is very interesting this makes the second grave I've seen that was made with field stones and a very interesting story to go with it.
So peaceful and lovely
What a lovely, peaceful graveyard. Thank you for the tour! And what an adorable, tour-guide puppy! He seemed very happy to see you!
You do travel to some of the coolest places. Thank you for doing this, I find it welcoming distraction from what is going on around the world. Thanks again
My great grandmother's family had one Jno too!
JNO stands for either John or Johannes, depending on which article you read.
or Johnathon
Johnathan was often Jno
Sherrie Davids yeah! Some charged per letter on Tombstones! Jno is a lot cheeper than Johnathan!
Same name, different language.
The silence and the birds... very soothing.
Thanks, but we don’t want any Floridians in our Georgia resting places. We’d like to keep the state classy.
The witches grave, she was disrespected in life and death, how sad.
I know right. But at least she made a little come back with that Hawthorne tree growing there! That's supposed to be the "Witches Tree"
Love seeing these old cemeteries. It's great that you are preserving the history💙
That was magnificent...thank you for sharing with us. Such things are important in life...especially so in these troubled times.
The birds singing in the background is peaceful and adds to the beauty of this cemetery. Did you film this in the morning , afternoon or evening ?
JNO is an abbreviation for Jonathan.
While doing genealogy research, I've also seen it as an abbreviation for John. Strange how they put the o after the n, but they did many things differently back then.
JNO is Johannes is John, man born in 1835 is probably Johannes. John would not be abbreviated. I often sign my name "Wm" Keith, or Bill.
JNTH. is usually Jonathan.
JNO. is probably John.
www.genealogyintime.com/dictionaries/list-of-first-name-abbreviations.html
@@williamkeith8944 I've seen Jno used for John in multiple census from 1800s.
OR John
I love stories, like that makes you think, who, what why,and where, but never to know, so fascinating to me and so peaceful there as well and beautiful. Great video Robert!
We too have witch graves here in New England area. I’ve been to one so far. And it’s very haunted by the witch!. Just because she is blocked into her grave don’t mean she can’t mess with electric devices or even mess with you while your there.
