  • Fawley Forester, Part 3: Cab view from Fawley Esso to Southampton Central, filmed from our preserved Hastings DEMU on Saturday 13 May 2017, during the Fawley Forester railtour/charter.
    .
** BACK CAB AUDIO: Between 1:00 and 23:30 the soundtrack in this video is from the *back cab*: this means that you won't hear the horn or whistle, because the microphone is in a noisy cab 120 metres away from the front of the train; you also won't hear the driver's controls. From 23:30 to the end you will hear these things. The reason for doing this is that during those times there were two members of traincrew in the cab conversing.
    .
This video comprises parts of two different trips from this date - there were three return trips between Southampton and Fawley Esso on this outing. We start off with footage from trip 2, but that ends before we reached Southampton; we conclude with footage from trip 3 in which the driver was on his own in the cab (hence leading-cab audio available).
    .
In this video we cover 12 miles and 23 chains, first up the Fawley branch through the former station layout at Marchwood (still with signals and points for trains accessing the Marchwood Military Port), and then rejoining the South Western Main Line near Totton for the remaining distance into Southampton.
    .
Video footage, and audio from 23:30 onwards, is from an unattended unmonitored forward-facing cab-camera in motor coach 60118 Tunbridge Wells. Where back-cab audio is provided instead, this was simultaneously recorded in the rear cab, motor coach 60116 Mountfield, and accurately synchronised with the video.
    .
This outing began at Hastings and ran via Tonbridge and Redhill to Woking, and then via Winchester to Southampton and on to the Fawley branch. Three return trips were made between Southampton and Fawley; this is the outward leg of the first such trip. Part 1 of this mini-series covered the outward leg between Woking and Basingstoke, and Part 2 covered trip 1 from Southampton to Fawley Esso.

Reminder: the soundtrack on this video, from 1:00 to 23:30, is recorded in the back cab. You won't hear whistles, horns, or the driver's controls from there.

Very relaxing to watch , quite therapuetic in fact , many thanks . Marchwood brings back memories of boarding a LSL , and sailing to Cyprus , transfer onto HMS Hermes and helicoptered to Sardinia , 1970's .

So loved these trains, was just sparing a thought for the driver at New Cross Gate who driving one of these kids had thrown a rock down from the bridge above, very tragic. The service to Hastings was detoured due to engineering works think it was around the Knockholt area so BR had to send the Hasting's trains the long way round which was a rare treat for cushion riders like myself. I remember having to speak with me dad at London Bridge box to assure him I was alright and I was a fair bit upset when they took the poor driver off by ambulance crew.

Great footage! I was on the first run to Fawley. The second run shown here, I was one of the two filming/photographing at the Hythe West Street crossing, and then for the third run I was filming from the bridge between West Street and Jones Lane. A great experience to have been able to ride a thumper past by back garden, after having had 13 years of seeing and hearing the oil tanker trains trundling past, and always wanting to ride a train on that line.
Thank you for making it possible!

For a disused/lightly used line the track looks to be in great condition, fewer weeds than many mainlines. Shame its turned into one of those 'green tunnels' though as the views over the Solent must be good.

I don't think many trains use the branch line - a few to Marchwood MOD but almost none beyond towards Fawley. Perhaps one day that will change...

  • @AndreiTupolev

Is the signal frame at Marchwood in the building on the platform? Is it manned on a regular basis or does the signalman* come down when there's a train going down there?

What’s the issue with having audio in the leading cab? Seen plenty of cab ride videos with audio. Is the driver having a top secret discussion or something ?

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  Před 5 lety

The issue arises when there are two members of traincrew in the cab. They will be talking, naturally enough, and they have a reasonable expectation of privacy. My camera is allowed there on the understanding that I don't publish these private conversations.
