This transports me right back to my childhood in the 70’s. Mum and dad always had Capital on the radio in the kitchen and these jingles and the Vogue interiors and Richards store ads I still remember the words to. Also remember Gerald Harper’s Sunday Affair show that used to be on as we were all sitting down to our Sunday roast. ‘I’m Gerald Harper, welcome to my Sunday affair’. Happy happy memories that bring a tear to my eye, loved growing up at that time.

Awesome. Oh such happy days listening to the mighty Capital Radio in the 1970s. It was such an awesome breath of fresh air after the sufficating naffness of Radio 1. Kenny Everett, Dave Cash, Roger Scott, Chrissie Wissie Tarrant, Tony Myatt, Graham Dene and Michael Aspel. Oh where have all the great radio stations gone?!😕

Um I might cry! This has brought back so many memories. I was obsessed with Capital when I was a Kid (mid 70's to mid 80's), and I mean obsessed! I used to bore my family and friends silly telling them about Capital, the DJ's etc. Knew all the jingles off by heart, plus the adverts (!). Hearing the Vogue Interiors, Richard Shops adverts made me laugh so much - still remember all the words after 40+ years (what!!). Btw, still think their Jingles were and are the very best. Thanks so much for uploading.

That was 9 minutes of awesome sounds - thank you for sharing your jingles. And most importantly, a big Happy Birthday to Capital Radio - 40 years old today.

The jingle was one of the most distinctive things of the station, but the DJ's were also simply just amazing. One add I recall was that for Curry Motors. Capital Radio launched on 16.10.1973 as the second independent radio station in the UK (LBC launched on 9.10.1973). It had a bit of an uncertain start, running into severe financial problems not helped by the 3 day week and its temporary low power transmitter on 539 m, strung up between the towers of Lots Road power station.
However, particularly after early 1975, when its 100 kW 194 m directional transmitter was turned on at Saffron Green in Hertfordshire, it soon established itself as the main pop station for south east England. I would say that it rivalled even the memory of the main offshore stations Caroline and London, in their 1965 - 1967 heyday.
A pity that it lost its way after about 1985 (or maybe I just got older!) and certainly after it was swallowed up into Global and lost its identity, all the result of the Thatcher government in allowing take overs and cutting its AM frequency and reducing its power to 25 kW.
    But good memories here.

Now if only I could find "oh-one... three-double-eight-one-two-five-five" somewhere. I'll keep searching.

Ah, how could we ever forget Laser 558? -"all Europe Radio, Laser five five ot!" I'd moved to Kent from late 1976 and in 84 we had our first ILR station, Invicta Sound on air. Sadly it was absolutely nothing like Capital and I believe Laser kicked it, and others, into shape. In a now music-frenzied playlist format era it can be easy to forget how Laser perhaps did more damage to previously DJ/personality radio however IMO. You're certainly never more than a minute from music now, if you can ignore those ever growing ad breaks!

Great stuff, however, the jingles for ILR in the 1970s/80s were designed as fillers to compensate for the needletime rules. ILR stations were allowed to play only 9 hours per day of music. To get around that rule and give the impression that more music was played, ILRs played a lot of music that wasn't counted as needletime such as live music, library music from album combinations and some imports (especially dance music from the USA). And of course the large array of jingles, which often included jingles of at least 1 minute's duration. Capital and Beacon were experts at this format which "cheated" the needletime rule.

Unfortunately it was Capital that turned into one of those big radio groups, it's now called Global. But what really killed it was Thatcher changing the broadcast rules so that radio stations had to specialise, in order to create competition with more radio stations. Capital used to cover everything, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Classical and phone-ins. Then it all ended in 1987.

Remember listening to Anna and the Capital doctor one evening in the late 1970s: a caller phoned-up to say that he couldn't stop farting! I'm still not quite sure how Anna and the Doc stopped themselves from laughing.

DJs could express themselves in the seventies....now it's just moribund playlists ........and a policy of trying to satisfy all

Absolutely ! Capital was THE only station worth listening to. I was living in Bath and I put a socking great FM aerial up on my roof just so I could hear Kenny/Roger/Dave & the crew in deepest Somerset !

Just uploaded a third volume of Capital jingles ("Capital Radio 194 Jingles & Roger Scott") - it contains a couple of upbeat variations on the main theme so hopefully they are the jingles you were thinking of.

Gosh your uploads are simply amazing. Even though I have all these jingles from my own early recordings it's still lovely to hear them again. I don't suppose you have the very first hour of Capital with Dave Symonds do you? I have a very ropey copy but am searching for that elusive pristine copy. Just a thought!! Thanks anyway for all of these. 539 forever!!!

Gov deliberately put them on 539 metres initially, to jam Holland’s offshore pirate Radio Veronica on same channel, thereby also messing up reception of Capital in the outskirts. Control madness. Moved to 194 metres after Dutch outlawed Veronica (and others). Listening on portable radio while cycling to school required rotating radio at each turn (radio internal ferrite bar aerials were directional).

I lived in Bath at the time & lost Capital on AM when they switched to 194 (1548kHz) as BBC Radio Bristol was on there from their new transmitter near Mangotsfield. ☹

I remember a pilgrimage up to the studios in 1978 to buy a Capital Radio T-shirt which I lived the hole summer long. Am I getting old or is Capital now truly awful.

Radio was controlled back in the 1970s by rules which only allowed commercials to be broadcast on ILR. They had the monopoly. Since 1993 ILR received competition and, in order to survive, commercial radio has dumbed-down because advertising companies are demanding narrow playlists to discourage listeners from tuning elsewhere. Dergulation ruined what we had, both with ILR and ITV. It's the lowest common denominator that rules.

  • @Candolad
    @Candolad Před 11 lety +1

The "suits" were allowed to move in due to deregulation and the government go ahead for independent (commercial) regional and national radio stations. Those three changes meant that ILR couldn't survive and competition for advertising airspace meant that the advertisers could dictate programming to the lowest common denominator. ILR was no longer bound by rules that ensured it catered for all tastes and the result is what we have now - a stronger BBC catering for all tastes.
