I was really happy and blessed to stumble upon all of her videos about the ribbon skirts. I do agree that it’s reclaiming power of the First Nation women. Which made it better for my experience was that I am making a ribbon skirt while listening to her videos and I feel a powerful presence that’s enlightening and sparking a power that I am reclaiming for my ancestors.
So many other tutorials I've watched were so complex, but this one is simple and easy! I made my first 2 skirts using Tala's technique, and when someone who sews asked me where I learned it from, they said she was using the old fashioned way. Honestly, I love it when people make things so easy and it was so effortless! I'll be using this for all of my ribbon skirts!
Lol! Cute wink! I love how you measure and cut. I've sewn my whole life. Thank ypu so very much for sharing your knowledge. Imma gonna make my Oneida grandaughters and beautiful daughter in law skirts! And...teach them
Thank you so much! I made my daughter her ribbon skirt tonight in 3 hours and I didn’t even know how to sew before today lol It was so easy because of your amazing demonstration!
Hello all! I thought the idea of fabric spray for ribbon skirts was a really great idea! However, I came across troubles because the ribbon would not lay flat, and kept bunching up. I didn’t have this problem when I used heat and bond on my other skirt. I recommend heat and bond over the fabric spray!
This was a good tutorial. The only thing she forgets to include is extra inches around the waist for sewing and room. I add an extra 10-15” for the waist and 4” for the length. My first skirt I ever made, I followed what she suggested (except I knew I needed to add 1 inch extra for hemming) and the skirt was snug, but wearable. (My daughter said she felt like she was walking like Mortisha from The Adam’s Family.
Thank you so much for this and the program I watched. It has such meaning and fits into my life also. I am making one now and will wear for the 1st time at our Pow Wow in Sept. Keep up the great work teaching others!!
Very informative, simple directions. I loved it. Good job. Lots of tutorials, they talk too much and makes it too long of a video. Yours is very simple and precise.
I have only a drop or two of Cherokee and I can’t decide whether I qualify to own one. These are colorful and beautiful and clever. My distant ancestors were Trail of Tears people. Maybe I should to honor them.
Why do I always wait until the last minute?😮 I will NOT be labeled as a shitty secret Santa!!!😅😂 We're exchanging ribbon skirts and beaded earrings 😊 20 talented Native women gift xchange.. I thought it was a great 💡 😊 So, i guess It's on!!!!
I was wondering how to adjust for women who have wider hips than the waist? I found that when assisting folks to make these, some cannot get the skirt past their hips.
Hello! I am a Native Algonquin girl from Canada. Is it alright if I make one of these? If so, when can I wear it? What does it mean? I'm sorry for all the questions. Thank you for teaching us.
It is perfectly fine for you to make & wear a ribbon skirt. Wear it anytime you want. The ribbon skirt originated in the wake of the global flu pandemic of 1918-21. There are videos describing the origin on CZcams. Originally lengths of ribbon were left hanging off the side seams of the skirt. When out walking, the free hanging ribbons would touch the grass. It was a way of connecting with the earth. Good luck & good health!
Hooooowah!! jus really fast demonstration hahaha but yes i understand that now....i am on my way to making my first ribbon skirt....thank you for the tutorial too. Miigwetch!! i love ur skirt by the way and i am just wondering what that spray is called? that looks way easier than using pins i think lol

Do you have a video where is it zoomed out so we can see when you take the step forward? Kind of what you are looking for with that step. And are we to rip the fabric like you did?

Is it okay for someone who isn't Native American to make and wear these skirts?
Laura Riggs i personally wouldn’t want non indigenous people to wear ribbons skirts unless they were gifted it from an indigenous person.

Length is how low you want your skirts (usually below knee).
