    Took me back 60 years ago. Our last dairy cows. Also Guernsey. Dad would milk by hand. He would rest his forehead against cows side to steady cow and rest his back. Cats would line up. He would squirt a treat. If not quick enough cats would claw his leg and bite.

      @vnthomas16  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for sharing your memories. Yes, she is a Jersey. Interesting, when we visited the Isle of Jersey, they dairyman there told us that if a Jersey has white markings, it means there was some Guernsey blood in her from way back when. I don’t know if that’s true, but it makes sense because Jersey and Guernsey are neighbors only a few miles apart. We have two Jerseys with white markings (they’re half-sisters).

    Congratulations! Sitting here watching this with daughter, Lydia, and we were testing our "calf expertise" trying to guess heifer or bull based on how the calf looked and acted. We both guessed correctly! Ha. Buttercup looks to have a nice udder with relatively minor swelling. Do/did you make use of oxytocin injection at first milking? We make it a practice here. Helps mama to flush her udder to make her comfortable and insure a good colostrum supply for us to feed the baby. Also help the uterus to contract and shed the placenta. Not sure if oxytocin is accepted organic protocol. Thanks for the video.
    Keith-

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 4 lety

      Keith Fink good guesses! No, we didn’t use oxytocin. I believe you can in organic as long as it’s not routine. We did two milking yesterday about 6 hours apart, about 10# each. We milked this morning and got 20#. Plus the calf is nursing, but he’s not taking too much right now. This morning we also rubbed her udder with uddermint to help with some edema. Seems to help. She shed her placenta pretty quick too, within 4 hours.

    That was awesome, no problems at all!!! Silly question on my part, did you milk buttercup before or after she birthed or both? That's what you were feeding Rainy, right? So I guess it was before she gave birth?

    • @vnthomas16
      @vnthomas16  Před 4 lety

      Steve no, we didn’t milk her before. The first time we milked her was about an hour after she gave birth. We bottle fed the colostrum just to ensure the calf got enough in a timely manner, but otherwise he’s been nursing on his own and we haven’t been feeding him.
