Why is North Macedonia Spending $65M On Arms During Tough Economic Times?

- In the wake of Russia's attack on Ukraine, most countries in the Balkans have been gradually increasing their military budgets. Especially the states that are still not a part of NATO. And while new players like Russia and China are signing defence deals in the region, the US remains the biggest source of military hardware for the Balkans. One of NATO's poorest and smallest members, North Macedonia, plans to strengthen its defence in the wake of Russia's attack on Ukraine. Skopje has announced it's set to buy an air defence system from France which it expects to receive next year. The first purchase of its kind in 20 years, many believe that North Macedonia is looking to send a message, due to fears the conflict in Ukraine could spill into the Balkans.

It'd be funny if they're building up there military to take back the rest of the Greek macedonia, when a larger conflict breaks out because of Russia.

We'd need to spend *way* more than $65M for that. Greece is on a whole nother level. Even IF we manage to build a larger army than the Hellenic one, we couldn't exactly do much because of NATO. Regardless of that, we don't need it. There's practically no ethnic Macedonian beyond Florina (and some sorounding towns/villages) - so we'd have a new minority to handle, that's even larger than the Albanian one.
Lmfao I reckon if we wanted to take back Aegean Macedonia, I'd personally start with the tiny bit Albania has, since their armed forces are way smaller than ours. Miniscule, but it's a start.

$65 million is quite low - not sure why this deserves a story. This amounts to $32 per person for a country of 2 million.
Well this certainly isn't something you see every day. First the Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and Strykers from the US, then the Boran howitzers from Turkiye and now air defense systems from France. The air defense system in question is probably the Crotale NG, a modern short ranged one. We should also consider getting some Turkish or Israeli drones to fill in the spot of our Air Wing's retired Su-25. I love seeing our army grow.

Why not. They had a coup attempt in 2015 but since it was non anti-Russians, nato stepped in and quashed it... which is the opposite to what they should've done in Ukraine the year before when nato plied the coup.

We recently joined NATO, we can't be relying on cold war era equipment left over from Yugoslavia. Our army is in the proccess of modernization, we're replacing all of our old weapons systems for modern NATO alternatives.
Same thing with Pakistan. They still pushed through purchasing f-16 even after 1/3 of their country is affected with floodwater/water born disease/food shortage.

Well the situation isn't *that* bad here.
I wouldn't call us wealthy or developed by any means, but we're not facing any food shortage or suffering from floods either.

Macedonia has 0 fear from Russia. Macedonia and Russia are best friends. As is Macedonia with all of the Slavic countries. Ukraine too. Ukraine supplied Macedonia with Military equipment in the war in 2001. So Macedonia's huge military spendings have nothing to do with the conflict in Ukraine. It has to do with something else...

@@alrf503 Even Lavrov himself in his visit to Africa, spoke about how all of the Macedonian people sup.port Russia (even if you search "Putin Song" on CZcams, the first one that will pop up is a Macedonian song that is filmed here).
And he also spoke the truth about how it wasn't the people, but the American-installed government that is taking action against Russia, against the will of the people.
So, there is 0% chance for you to see Russia attacking Serbia or Macedonia. We are actually one of the safest countries during a Nuclear Armaggedon.

or that is: how the USA and NATO see the situation and whether they want it to be...
and in the end it is:
they throw cents or dimes to PP leaders, to pit political parties for US influence and friendship...
but they (USA/NATO) don't know that in the Balkans every love is as strong as the money given...
and finally, the Russians are Slavyanic brothers with the majority of Balkans, and only to the miserable and corrupt governments of the Balkan countries, NATO is of interest, as a big brother protector (of the criminal governments)
We where friendly with them before they invaded Ukraine, that’s no longer the case. We send a large number of small arms to Ukraine, 12 Attack helicopters and around 40 Tanks. This money here is to replace what with new NATO gear, even if we could overpower greece to take back Aegean Macedonia we wouldn’t, we must live with our neighbors, Greeks are not bad people I’ve been there many many times, we must not live in the 19 century and we should work together to help Ukraine and make the balkans safer when possible, of course Kosovo and Srbija make that really difficult to do..
