I’m coming in under an apprenticeship and I’m looking to further my education to repairing construction equipment. I’m excited, ready to learn.
Helped me a lot with this video. Just got out of high school been MIG welding for almost 2 years now. I’m uncertified tho and really wanna get my certs in MIG and stick which I can also do pretty well. I chose not to go to school for welding since well I’m already employ. And It’s so complicated reading online about how to do it 😂. You simplified it perfectly thank ya
Great info stated plainly. Really appreciate it!
incredible video, currently in welding school, studying up on short term starting to weld as well as creating a long term goal and understanding what’s the next step and that’s of course to be a CWI, like yourself. Thank you for this incredible video. Hope it reaches more people!
Can you please tell me where do you live i live in uk derby and want to do welding course but don’t know how to select and find institute
I didn't finish my welding classes when I was in school. In my area there are more welders than there are jobs. A lot of companies in my area hire welders from outside in. They tend to hire certified welders from outside before they promote within. To combat that I will go get a certification based on company needs on my own. That way I have some kind of leverage.
That sounds like a good plan. I would contact the company and ask them exactly what you can do to make your resume go to the top.
Cool video
I'm from New Zealand and now in Australia...Very much the same in regards to the Company weld certs in both NZ and Australia.
But, any other certs you may have paid for are not recognized by the company/client. I paid over $15,000/14,000 USD for a 6-month course 20 years ago and when I left the course I had to immediately resit the qualification for the company I worked for.
Not a big deal. I think welding is one of the only trades that disregard any previous experience. But when you have the experience...a weld test is, just another weld.
A KIWI! You got it. That is why welders tend to have a bit of a chip on their shoulder.
I think it's only A&P aviation mechs that get an 'everything' license nowadays.
Please help me how to get a welding license in australia
my local welding class only offered Oklahoma state steamcard. but what kind of certifications would I need for something more construction based/ or general repair on machinery and vehicles? they didn't really touch on that subject. it was more "weld in this position with these settings. bring it to me when you're done." and if they liked how it looked "okay, now cut another plate. weld in this position with this rod on these settings. come back when you're done."
General certifications don't really exist. You have to know the exact application for your certification to be used. That being said any certification passed looks good on your resume so get as many as you can. The best thing you can do if you know where you want to go is to ask the company what to get certified in before you apply. They will know the exact code, material, positions, thickness, pipe or plate, and etc.
I understand, that was just a really bad way for me to word that question lol.
Great video... but quick question... Can I get certified for a particular type of welding in order to run my own fabrication business and maintain the certification that way? Or do I need someone to sign off on my logs regularly?
There should be some degree of separation of powers when it comes to certification. For instance at one point I was a welding engineer, a CWI, and a certified welder at one company. I couldn't design a product, write the procedures for it, and then certify myself. It would be considered unethical.

@@TVWeld That makes sense. I just wonder how I would manage to keep a certification when I'm a one man shop running a fabrication business.
Is a high school diploma needed for refinery welding? Or for a travel welding job
Probably not, but I'd DEFINITELY get your diploma!
My cwi failed me because I changed the voltage by 2% for the cap only from 23.5 v to 23.2v on a fcaw 3g test ... i passed the bend test with no inclusions no lack of fusion everything tested perfect but bc I didn't follow the parameters how HE wrote the wps ....is this fair or bullshit?
Short answer = It is fair because you went out of the parameters on the WPS. I do have a question though. Were the parameters on the WPS in a range, or was the voltage listed at exactly 23.5?
Would my training as a welder in Germany with a certificate be enough for this or would that not work for you?
Is it a certification to a certain code or a certificate of completion? If it is to a code, then you are a certified welder. If it's a certification of completion, then that is telling an employer that you have been trained in welding for a certain number of hours.
I have 2 years of experience as a mig welder , will I get a CWB certification.
I'm assuming your from Canada?
Can you please tell me good institute for this in uk derby?
I have no idea. Your best bet is to get on the internet and find a place that has an affiliation with a globally recognized organization like the AWS, ASME, etc.
Do you need a ged to get certifed?
It depends on where you work & if the customer requires it!
Dude what is welding??
Welding is a process that joins two pieces of metal or adds metal to an existing surface through the use of electric fuel to create extreme heat and make a fusion bond between the filler metal and the work piece.
Qualified with the company. Not certified . It was taken out of the code in the 70's...Misinformation sir. Thanks
You’re fun at parties I bet
That's right. Although the welding procedures and procedure qualifications are specific to the company. You can't qualify a procedure and take it elsewhere and use it. AWS does have basic WPS's that can be used though.
Your reply did discuss other areas. It’s understood that most companies and welders like to call themselves Certified but in general it is Qualified . Take care.
